So the term "plankton" means any organism, plant/animal/whatever, that cant swim against/is pulled along with ocean currents. Animal plankton are called zooplankton and plants are phytoplankton. Plankton (the character) is based on a type of zooplankton called a copepod, which is a tiny crustacean with antennas and even a single eye. Although most plankton are really tiny, its not a requirement because jellyfish, no matter the size, are a type of plankton too

It stands to reason that they are in Bikini Atoll, in the pacific. It was used as an underwater nuclear testing facility after WW2, and conducted 23 nuclear tests. There are several fan theories surrounding this and the upright, walking, intelligent sea life in the show. It would also explain why there are so many random human items down there, and why the buildings look like human made parts, normal to us but giant to a fish. But then there's mermaid man and barnacle boy who are the same size as everyone in bikini bottom, so there's some confliction with that, but it makes sense for this to be Bikini Atoll, Bikini Bottom.

Haven't been watching this because I'm not a fan of Spongebob outside of a few episodes, but this is one of them. I love Plankton. I think the reason I never got into Spongebob even though almost everyone I know loved the show when it first aired is that I was comparing it to old Nickelodeon stuff like Rocko's Modern Life and Cartoon Network shows like Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls, all of which I still like better than Spongebob.
