The end of an era with the Friday Reads moving to Saturday 😔You're absolutely right in doing it, though, of course. It being one day later doesn't kill anyone I'm very curious about Usurpation, your descriptions about it always sound interesting, I guess I'll have to add it to my eventual TBR list Huh, interesting about Exordia. I think I'd probably appreciate it, but it maybe becoming a series kinda makes it less exciting to me (I have way too many series to read at the moment, so I'm looking for standalones anywhere I can lmao). But I guess I might just take the author on their word and read it as a standalone and pray this is it This week, I finished We Used to Live Here, which was pretty good but the last 20% kinda took away a lot of the excitement I had gained in the 25% - 70% portion of the book. Anyway, I already told all about it on Discord. And then I read Bury Your Gays, by Chuck Tingle, which was GREAT, very fun, very cool and I just loved it, so now I gotta read Camp Damascus and I'll be waiting for the author's new release, Lucky Day. Now, I'm reading The Grace of Kings. I've read 4 chapters for now (which is about 10% of the book) and I'm very curious. Big difference in momentum from Bury Your Gays, but, I mean, after 2 years of Malazan I can't really complain about that sort of thing, and I'm already getting into the right speed of things with this book. I'd have read more but I was very tired this week, so it is what it is. It is VERY unlikely that I'll finish it next week, though, it'll probably take me a couple of weeks to read it. Which is fine, I don't really care about that. As long as I can at least read more than 1 book in a given month, I'm happy

Glad you enjoyed your reads this week more than you were expecting! I really want to find some romantasy that actually fits my style since those are my two favorite genres, but I get the impression that what is out there isn't what I'm looking for. Reign & Ruin is the closest I've found to what I'd like more of.

I just picked up the next book in the Discworld Witches series because I am feeling very stressed out and sad (doing a PhD has been very stressful from the start, but being in the last year with deadlines approaching on all sides is really mentally and emotionally draining 😅) so I needed something silly as a pick me up. I had 3 different comical fantasies to choose from - Magic Kingdom for Sale/Sold series by Terry Brooks (the author of Shannara books), Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde and the next book in the Witches Discworld subseries and that is the one I picked, because I know that the narrator for that series is excellent. However, I am not sure it is doing for me what I need it to do 🤔 Nothing I have been picking up lately is really doing it for me, but I am guessing that is more due to my current mental state than the actual books 😅

my vote is for The City in Glass if you feel like fitting something else in! was one of my favorite reads this month, though honestly i haven't had many misses

Started Words of Radiance yesterday, trying to take it slowly rather than binge it, but keep getting sucked into that ‘just one more chapter’ mode of reading! Also reading Witches Abroad (book 3 in the Witches subseries of the Discworld books, and about to embark on a reread of Connie Willis’ To Say Nothing of the Dog.

Your ability to continue with series always brings me joy (and hope for me). I'm glad you ended up liking Exordia bc I have started it but was wary of dedicating myself to it. I think I am going to try Quicksilver to spark some romantasy speed reading as well.

I think there is a chance you will like Exordia more than me, curious to see if I am right!

The fact that I kinda freaked out yesterday when there was no Friday Reads is probably a good indication of how invested I am your reading journey ahahhah. Glad that you are finding a new fun routine and balance now though! 🥰 Anyway, I also just finished Onyx Storm and I am kinda whelmed by it but then I also wasn't invested in the first place so I can't really say I am disappointed soooo yeah.... lol. I think Xaden and Vi were maybe a bit too mature and healthy, give me more of that drama please lmao. Also, the side characters needed so much more development, Ridoc is the only person I care about lol 🤣 Hope you have a great weekend. Cheers 😍

Exordia is wild. I kinda love it. The first 40ish pages are kinda rough before the attack happens. But the book is super fascinating. My fav part was the blackbird investigation and the weird metaphysical magic/tech. Like the atmanach, or the soul being visible, or slingshotting the ship around death. Its so wacky. Im dying for the last Baru Cormorant book

See I loved those 40 pages, Anna was such a vivid character to be with, and I love how act 2 set things up. I still have no idea exactly why act 3 was the slog it was for me. But it truly took me so long to read and felt like a chore

Yay, i was worried when there wasn't a Friday reads!😊

Never fear they are simply shifting a day in the schedule!

I was so confused and a little sad yesterday when there wasn't a Friday reads. It was always my "I just came home from my last class on Friday, so now the weekend can begin"-video. I guess i'll have to search for something else to fill that spot and watch these on Sundays instead
@LiteratureScienceAllianceКүн бұрын
Sorry the routine had to change but I would probably be miserable/burn out if I was struggling to get a video together after teaching a night class every Thursday, so alas I had to accept my limitations 😔

Oh yeah. A TV show is a good comp for Expodia's structure. I kept thinking of lost. Nobody knows what's going on but people keep making consequential decisions based on incomplete knowledge and their inflexible worldviews. The most complex trolly problem you could think of. Yeah, a weird time. And I don't know who to recommend it to, but I know the people who like it will like it a lot. I think I heard Dickinson has more story planned out, but there's a question as to whether or not they will get to write in.
@LiteratureScienceAllianceКүн бұрын
Yea I think the question is if a publisher will pay him to write it? But I do hesitate to recommend it as a standalone just cause it doesn’t feel like one to me. Like so many character arcs are unfinished and there is so much still to know

I'm currently finishing off Quicksilver (I think I've made a mistake and tried to do too much romantasy in one go) and then I'm probably going to read The Immortality Thief if I feel like it, otherwise I don't know what I'm going for! I've made my Feb TBR but I want to save those for Feb sooooo I'm stuck.

Have you read The Windup Girl? It is an interesting read. Cheers.

What about Weekend Reads? That way you can post it Saturday OR Sunday and then you don't have to worry about the name and it buys you an extra day in case you're exhausted and need a rest day? (Just for a new name I'm not trying to get you to change your schedule). I'm so glad you're making it work for yourself! Don't push too hard you deserve rest

Did you read The Traitor Baru Cormorant also by Seth Dickinson? I just finished the first book and I absolutely loved it
