What I love about this is that its embracing the visual style of the anime. The entire setting is something so different from traditional hollywood that I was afraid they'd find it almost ttaboo for American audiences. They definately made the right call staying true to the tone of the show. As a fan of the anime I'm very intrigued and I think other viewers will be too.

why wouldn't you judge a movie on its first 5 minutes if you could? I don't want to waste my time with potentially bad movies...Or rather movies that claim to be something that they obviously aren't just by using it in the title for brand recognition. From all the PR material it is clear that this movie has few things in common with ghost in the shell at best, regardless if it is good or bad, it is not Ghost In The Shell. Ghost In The Shell is not about generic revenge stories, stolen memories, giant generic looking kinda futuristic and dystopian looking big cities, unrealistic super power like action sequences. And while this may seem a nitpick its also not Ghost In The Shell when they change the main character into SOMEONE ELSE.. And if it is not how it looks like at the moment and I'm wrong than the PR material should've done a better job at selling its product..

I was in college when the first anime movie came out. I've seen every series and movie since then. This live-action movie looks interesting to me, and I will watch it when it comes out. I suspect I will enjoy it. Like the Trekkies who hated the Star Trek reboot, for everybody who is hating on this because of some nit-pick "purist" reason ("the plot is different, the characters aren't true to the source material, or the CGI isn't up to my standard" or whatever the excuse is), it's your loss. Makes no difference to me or to all the others who will go see this movie. With that said, have a nice day.
@Summon2567 жыл бұрын
I never heard of the purists, that would complain about characters not being true to source material! Even hardset nitpicking types i have seen all admit that the characters are spot on! I have already heard complains about plot being too altered from the original among other few things, but i have never heard anyone complaining about characters this far! The only ones complaining are those, who aren't happy with this movie being dominated by non-asian cast (including ScarJo herself)...But those are hardly purists! Those are casuals, who know tiny to nothing about original manga's story and complain just based on what they have seen on pictures and scareencap scenes on the internet! Its like they have seen it takes place in futuristic Tokyo, they have seen asian characters and made an assumptions, that because of how it all occured to them the only way to make movie right is to make it all-asian cast, written and directed by asian person! Lol Those, who you'd call purists, are the group that knows original manga's backstory and they would never complain about whitewashing, because they know that cyborgs from this anime are multi-racial and it can be asian, white, hispanic or even african! Lol
@maggyfrog7 жыл бұрын
gonna watch it, but i just have to say, it's ridiculous of you to say that it's "wrong" to critique the plot, how true they stayed to the source material, or the CGI. you're basically saying accept it whether it's good or atrocious. i'll watch it, but just like any discerning person, would expect it to be really damn well-made and not just like it for the sake of "not being a snob"
@TheDreamMachine00897 жыл бұрын
Maggy Frog I'm sorry you can't judge a new ghost in the shell project on source material alone. there is not one adaptation that is purely like the original manga. even though the 95 film hits a lot of beats from the puppet master, tonally it's very different and the questions it asks are similar but not entirely the same. what you need to make a successful ghost in the shell adaptation is to stay true the core of the characters, and to have a plot that invokes thought on some philosophical level, beyond that there's a lot of flexibilty since every adaptation is so different than one another. the only adaptation that truly feels like manga is the game for psone.

You KNOW it's a Hollywood movie. You KNOW they don't give a shit whether a remake is the same as the original or not. You KNOW they don't give a fuck about little details like that when they translate something into a Hollywood movie. All they give a fuck about is generating hype and making a quick buck. Yet you still complain. Get over it. Stop the pedantry, because you KNOW damn well what a Hollywood remake implies. When has a Hollywood remake ever done the original thing justice? Never! People know this, yet they still complain and nitpick, just to prove that they are fans of the original. Wel ok we fuckign get it, you watched the original when it wasn't popular, do you want a fucking medal or something? There is no other reason to complain other than to show off the fact that you are an original fan, because complaining won't make Hollywood delete the fucking movie and shoot it again, it won't change anything, you aren't achieving anything other than boasting about pedantic little details. Obviously the Hollywood movie won't be exactly the same as the original, and obviously the fact they left this detail out doesn't affect the plot of this movie that much if they left it out. So for whatever they had in mind for this movie to be, it obviously wasn't a detail that made a big difference. With that being said, if you're so obsessed with the original then go and watch that instead of complaining about how this one doesn't live up to it. The original one is still in tact and very much vaailable to stream, this movie will not ruin it in any way, you people are just being dramatic.

@Blackfox26027 жыл бұрын
José Abel Salazar Lizárraga I’m saying the animators could have had other motives to having the characters speak telepathically. That's part of the reason why anime have characters cover their mouths when they speak to cut down on cost. That being said super cool of the anime to cut down on cost and make it somewhat, make some story sense. Being able to have the characters communicate in this way allowed for what is a very visually impressive anime. I'm also pretty sure if the anime had the characters communicate like plebs, I don't think it would effect the story very much. I could always be wrong. I guess we'll see.

This actually seemed pretty good. I think Scarlet's acting fits the role well ..
@JulianColbus7 жыл бұрын
I disagree regarding Scarlett's acting. In the beginning of the scene, she's too tense, trying way too hard to come across as super-tough; anime-Kusanagi is a lot more relaxed and "matter-of-fact"-ish. And the way Scarlett gets startled in the end, emptying her pistol in panic, doesn't fit the old character either. But I'm sure the director has a big say in this kind of thing and Scarlett does as she is told - and after all, this is a new interpretation in its own right. I'm just saying it doesn't fit the role of Kusanagi we've come to know from the old animes and mangas.
@DarkTenka7 жыл бұрын
You're really reaching man. She wasn't tense and she wasn't startled. You don't want it to be good and you're seeing shit that isn't there. It's very easy to get swept up by a hate band wagon and convince yourself of something you want to be true just to reaffirm your existing beliefs. Scarlett portrays Motoko in a stoic matter of fact way that is about as good as you can expect from most actors. Remember Motoko isn't completely devoid of emotion either, shes a cyborg, not a robot. Motoko should be about 20% emotion and 80% calculation and I think Scarlett has done a good enough job representing that.
@AngelusHale7 жыл бұрын
Scarlet's acting was never the issue. Whitewashing was. I don't think any of us doubt that she can handle herself in this type of role.
@DarkTenka7 жыл бұрын
Oh yea .. that. lol. It's continuously hilarious how little people know about GITS that they think she needs to be Asian. Based on the original 1995 anime her cyborg body actually represents that of a european woman. But if you would rather GITS: SAC, Scarlett's appearance is almost dead perfect by comparison. The entire white washing bullshit fear is just plain incorrect.
@mindyours7527 жыл бұрын
+Dark Tenka What? " *Based on the original 1995 anime her cyborg body actually represents that of a european woman.* " No the hell she wasn't based off a European woman. She was a mass produced synthetic that came in a various amount of hair colors and different shades of eye color. What you are referring to is a clip of her next to a blonde synthetic. Had you paid attention to the old series you would of known that she had small slants in her eyes; which was different then any of the actual other American European models. Also if you know w anything about Anime. Hair color and eye color does not mean a thing. You have people with grey, green, black, white, orange, red, blue, brown, etc. hair and or eye color. That does not distinguish their ethnicity even in the slightest. That's like saying Goku is white because he gets blonde hair. Even now that he has various different hair colors. Next you'll say Makishima Shougo from Psycho-Pass was white because he had white hair. In every adaption if not from the original animated series. If you watch all the animated movies, series, ovas, onas, specials, etc. If you look at her backstory. She is literally portrayed as an Asian character who had Asian parents. Who was given an Asian synth as a child. To which the original she was an Asian child caught in a plane accident to the later series adaption to where she was an Asian fetus/brain given a cybernetic body. Ghost in the Shell is very diverse in culture and Nationality. Yet they fully distinguished her ethnicity origin and name. I understand you want her so bad to be white. Yet at the end of the day she is still Asian. Thus yes. They white washed her character. Had they made her Asian but like in the series gave her different synthetic bodies. Be it man, woman child, etc. Given she also went undercover as a male mercenary. Then that's one thing. Yet to say she is white is the funniest shyt I have ever heard.

came right after seing ghost in the shell (1995 version not the 2.0) for the first time.. i was an anime fanatic for a long time.. started all with saber riders and captain future back then in the 80s 90s cartoons.. but i never was that much into animes and stuff.. after a lot of time i found out about akira (1996) and i loved the anime so much. i knew from gits existence but i never cared about it because akira was dark enough and i was kinda scared.. that were my really first starts with anime.. i did not even know where they were from and what all that manga and anime stuff was.. now watching back i went throught a lot of stuff in life... and now finally after so much freagging years i manged to watch THE FRIST ghost in the shell movie the original from 1995. Okay.. the Visuals look amazing .. hands down.. it looks beautiful honestly.. this looks very very good... if this would be a stand alone movie i would have goon into the cinema.. but let me tell you there are a lot of changes beteen the anime and this here.. there are no robot geishas and there are not that much "hench men" with briefcase rifles either... and that guy with the white hair (forgot his name) looks really bad.. I am even ok with miss Johanson playing this role.. despite the fact that i wanted a a japanes actress to play this role.. most of you will say "she is a cyborg so there is no race" but the original mangake gave this character the name "kusanagi" which sounds pretty much japanese to me..so there it would have been more logical to let an asian actress play this role. i wonder why they went with that change.. and also there was no black people in the anime like in this scene here. they changed a lot in this scene sadly.. dont get me wrong this is my personal opinion.. sadly theyve changed so much because after so much time i managed to watch the original anime.. and they changed so much.. :( i am looking foward to see this movie nevertheless.. i am open for constructive critics.. in a polite way ladies and gentlemen have a nice day

Everything people point out that is considered bad is just GitS fans criticizing everything that isn't exactly as their nostalgia remembers. They basically want the Anime, just not anime. Since you can see her ab and other muscles, theres not a whole lot of fabric between her skin and what we see. That's like the swimsuit models with painted on bikinis. They're not really naked, but they are...
@Dragonking19847 жыл бұрын
Which is funny because in the original anime movie when the major used her optical camo she would go full on nude. (obviously what they were trying to simulate without actual nudity) Also i don't ever recall her ever refer to herself in the 3rd person. The name "major" was more of a nickname then a actual name. That's like spending the entire movie calling her "Queen kong" because Ishikawa called her that once.

I definitely agree, unfortunately philosophy doesn't attract people to the cinema, so I don't think much has been included. Hopefully some philosophical and existential questions are at least explored in some way.

So far what I know of the movie, its a repackaged mix of the first episode of the anime and the first animated movie.
@dabo61947 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but the Geisha robot asking for help comes from the 2nd movie, I guess they mixed the puppet master' story with the Gynoids and the politician's story of ep.1. It's a bit of everything.

Blaque Pauldron yup and I'm not caring for it. They could have literally made the series into a live action and I'd be all over it... But twisting the plot or creating a new one just kills it for me.

Have you ever watched the Ghost In The Shell movies? Have you watched the TV Series? Read the books? This follows NONE of it. They created their own plot/universe and removed the elements that made you think.They made a great series into a generic scifi action movie. They didn't even use the original composer of the soundtracks, or vocalist at least... nope... GENERIC.
@Dustie19847 жыл бұрын
So when Rupert said in a featurette that they took the main elements and fit them in a new narrative, it's true? It's all changed?

@monsieurpedda18287 жыл бұрын
Well, it's nice to hear that you are happy :3 but there are two things I like to mention: 1. The "real" GITS (I'm talking about the '95 movie) is a fantastic masterpiece. I'm not Japanese (I'm German) but seeing this, I would not be happy at all (just imao). I think that movie doesn't inspire you to watch anime or think about philosophic questions, it's just weird designed action crap. 2. You know Inception from Chris Nolan? It was inspired by Paprika, an anime- movie by Satoshi Kon. Both are really good movies (also imao :D). Maybe you also know Kill Bill (Vol. 1) - remember this little anime about O-Ren, which was made by production I.G... same studio which made the '95 Ghost in the Shell ^~^
@ub3rfr3nzy947 жыл бұрын
Reserve your judgement until you see it, you don't know this yet. Even if it isn't like the gits that won't make it a bad film either. I haven't seen gits, I'm going to watch this and *then* the anime.

I personally like how this looks so far. I grew up watching Japanese anime and I've continued to do so for almost 4 decades. My first experience with Ghost in the Shell was the 1995 anime movie of the same name, followed by the sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. I really enjoyed these so I started watching the series (Stand Alone Complex, SAC: 2nd GIG and Arise) and then finally SAC: Solid State Society. Finally, there's Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie which is also an anime and a lot of people said it was terrible but I really enjoyed it. This latest movie looks to be pretty good, too. I personally like Scarlett and from what I've seen so far she seems like a good fit. As always, I'll be going into this movie with an open mind but from what I've heard from reviews in Japan that this movie respects the cannon from past movies/series so that's a plus. I also like how they've blended CGI with real mechanical props, it adds a level of believability. I think that those who come here to hate on the film do so simply because they don't like Scarlett Jo, are mad they didn't cast an Asian to play the part of Major, or they just don't know anything about the series as a whole.

Just curious . . . As being a fan since reading the Masamune Shirow (or Shirow Masamune) Graphic Novel translated and huge admirer of his art and designs, and then the 2 Anime movies and the series, what did you think after seeing it? I have not seen it yet, the 2 things that bother me so-far from what I've "heard" and seen in the trailers: 1. The "backstory" for the Major, in the anime movies she already knows that she was "created", the thing she questions though is "being". Whats her purpose in life, which she has many discussions with Bato. 2. The look of the city from a birdseye view, its a production thing that bugs me, because the anime movies look more "realistic", hell - even in the series. From the trailers and stills I've seen the city looks a bit goofy. I still want to see it though, but thank you in advance :).

Well, I remember when I saw the first trailer to this film I really struggled. It seemed jumpy & disjointed & did little to get me buzzed up about the film. But every time a new trailer came out they just got better & better until we get to this clip! It was already in my top 3 most anticipated films of the year. Now I'm absolutely boucing off the walls with excitement for this. Can't wait.

*Positive:* - love how they combined aspects of the opening scenes of the manga/1995 movie and Stand Alone Complex, that was actually genius - overall aesthetics are generally well adapted, especially the net dive visualizations *Negative:* - some aspects of the aesthetic are off completely. What the hell is up with those androids? They're not supposed to look so robotic. The clear distinction of incredibly organic-looking to the point of being visually indistinguishable from humans (unless they activate combat features) androids and utilitarian robotics was a major point of every GitS art style. You were supposed to gasp in shock when the limbs of a seemingly normal human suddenly split apart to become high-caliber auto cannons... - bullshit optical gimmicks like glowing wires and holograms that make the technological vision laughable and infantile. Originals did just fine without that crap.

Liked it and will go see this, but they didn't go to far with the concept if the "major" acts so human. Why would she move her lips to speak via wireless? and move her head to walk around the virtual building? she didn't hack any of the terrorist either. Pity they don't use the same composer off the original movie, or show the wire when she stops to free fall. Don't put your expectations to high I guess... Cheers
@jorgepeterbarton7 жыл бұрын
ah they just think the american audience are idiots and wouldn't get a concept like remote transmission of message without moving lips...the dumbing down commences, hey they even brostepped up the classical score
@fakkumailaifu97617 жыл бұрын
jorgepeterbarton if Scarlett hadn't moved or acted as slightly human then people would've called her an untalented actress by the people who didn't watch the anime . This movie won't be exactly the same as the anime and it will never be far more superior . They want other people to watch this movie too not just us fans . If you don't like it then don't watch it.

The movie Major is a combination of Majors from the manga, Stand Alone Complex, and the 1995 movie. She was only stoic/unfeeling in the 1995 movie. She showed a lot of emotion in SAC and in the manga.

Great Job but here is the bitching part: The Major in all of the Ghost in The Shell movies and anime series, was tough cold confident and never hesitant. I'm talking about the opening act. They could've done better with Scarlet Johansson's performance. But maybe they were afraid she'll look too similar to her Black Widow character.

@raksh97 жыл бұрын
I have really mixed feelings about Avatar. On one hand it was visually gorgeous and seamlessly edited. But the story was so ideologically heavy handed and trope-laden that it was akin to a Michael Bay film. It was just disappointing that the director of such incredible films like Aliens, The Abyss and Terminator 2 took such a derivative, cookie cutter approach to scripting and direction. So, I hope and trust that Cameron does the right thing by Battle Angel. He will have the budget to make it amazing, let's hope he does it justice.
@bensons24056 жыл бұрын
Oh god no, Hollywood is going to ruin battle angel Alita with a like a weak ass PG rating. weak sauce. Just like this Ghost in the shell.
