I've been riding for five decades and one thing in particular I've totally changed my mind on. Metal frame hand guard protectors. I say DON"T use them! If you crash (ahem, we all do) your hands / fingers get rammed into the metal frame resulting in serious injury to your fingers. They also prevent your ability to just slide your hands outward off the bars in a mishap. Happened to me, jammed a finger into the bar. Yes controls are expensive but our fingers are more important. Hope this makes sense to all. I have a 15' 500-EXC, initially installed Acerbis hand guards but have removed them for above mentioned reason and I haven't broken a control item in 4 years of riding. These bikes are a lot tougher than one may think. Protect yourself, not the bike! P.S. I have a nice 500-EXC specific Acerbis hand guard set for sale :-)

Another thing that I do, to protect levers from breaking is that i don't tighten them all the way. Just enough so they don't move on jumps, but move when ramed in to the ground.

Also take a hacksaw to the lever ends so you are using 1 finger on the brake and two on the clutch, or whatever you like. Take a small file to the cut and you have a smooth, custom fit just for you. Great videos Ian.

Just brought home a new 2020 ktm 500exc-f today. Took it out for about 4 miles on the road and it stalled 3 times, mostly when I was slowing down to make a turn, pulled the clutch in coasted a few feet and before downshift and it stalled. It never stalled on take off. Is that normal during brake in period? Also how long is the brake in period? How long should I baby the throttle before i can ride it hard?

My 18 did that too... listen ... DELETE ALL EMISSIONS CRAP NOW.... and get at least a piggyback fuel controller... and open the exhaust up...ktmhuskyparts.com will help you with all that...what sucks is you have an o2 sensor

Im torn between the 690 and 500exc. Any thoughts from anyone is appreciated. I plan on doing a mix of riding. 75/25 road/off-road .

I haven't had a ktm.......but I did have a DR650 that was really set up great for the dirt.... I found the 650cc Big thumper was just too much torque in the dirt/trails..... I have a Honda 250 now, that I find the power much more manageable for offroading. That was my experience....

Stay tuned to my channel a detailed comparo is coming, I've had both. but 75 road 25 road, that leans 690 or 790 for sure. 500 is like 80 offroad, 20 on road.
@jeffmm1474
@jeffmm1474 4 жыл бұрын
I've had both. I miss the 690 when riding to the trails and miss the 500 when I get there. There is not a perfect option, its a compromise either way. Both great bikes but you need to be honest with yourself as to how you will be riding both. If you like difficult single track the 500 is the only good option of those two. If you like exploring trails and forest service roads but not into challenging technical single track then the 690 is a great option. One word of advise on the 690 though is you will probably want to re-valve the suspension for serious off road work. Hope this helps.
