Absolutely loved this movie. I went to see it in the theater and actually cried at the end...mostly due to so much of black history being untold and/or erased. Reading how many masterpieces by Joseph Bologne being destroyed hurt.

I enjoyed it too, as I am fond of Bologne's music. A great start (as here) and ending, but a bit laborious over his application to be the director of the Paris opera. However, unlike other drama/documentaries of well known composers, there was not much of his music in the film, which disappointed me.

It's not history. He was a good composer and great violinist by all accounts. But the facts are manipulated so that black people can feel some sort of pride. Why, I don't know. You can't play like that or write that kind of music, so what are proud for? Because some half Euro-half Haitian guy was excellent?? Whatever. Go be excellent yourself.

It's devastating that I just recently found about this film. If only I'd known about Joseph Boulogne before it came out... the last half of the movie left me in shambles and honestly it's cruel what his country who he defended and loved treated him like he was disposable and unworthy of recognition because of his skin color. Boulogne deserved better in life and death. It's sad that it took more than 200 years for his name to become well respected. The historical inaccuracies are not the best part of the film but something that got me emotional was when his mother told him that he has "choices" and he chose to stand up for what was right in the end.

There are so many amazing black classical composers that haven't had enough historical recognition, or at least didn't get the recognition they deserved until long after they died. You should check out Wikipedia's category of black classical composers and African-American classical composers. Also I'm almost certain you have heard The Entertainer before. Scott Joplin was another black classical composer who fell into obscurity after his death and was forgotten about until his music was used in a 1970s film.

I saw this film and enjoyed it. It is a poignant film about identity and perseverance, as well as the practice of erasure. Though they are very different films with main characters who are very different from each other, Chevalier is a good companion piece to Ridley Scott's Napoleon. Chevalier is a prelude to the French Revolution, and Napoleon focuses on the aftermath. In its own right, Chevalier will hopefully inspire more people to learn about the real Joseph Bologne.

Amadeus at least had incredible character development. Chevalier was a hallmark Xmas special. Mad corny. What do you think is an example of Joseph's best compositions? It was strange to me that Chevalier used barely a shred of his music. This lead me to believe there is none. Please point me in the right direction, thanks

@@deepakfineberg he was a real person but the movie did change details. This scene never happened. Plus at one point, Joseph Bologne plays African-American style music that didn't exist until over 100 years later. Another major detail that was changed in the movie was that his mom Nanon didn't come to France until after his dad died, but in real life she went to France two years after Joseph and his dad moved.

Trying to compare Mozart with Bologne is laughable. One has a undeniable style that influenced countless future composers while the other one hasnt. People wine about his music being purposely hidden. Get off it. Bach was forgotten. Vivaldi was forgotten. Rameau and Zelenka were forgotten because of changing fads and philosophies. All of them are more compelling composers when compared to Bologne.

while this scene is fiction, considering Bologne was 13 years older than Mozart and a accomplished composer, this scene itself is based on a sort of similar situation that happened between Jimi Hendrix & Eric Clapton where Clapton asked Hendrix to jam with him on stage the first time they met and Hendrix stole the show to the point that Clapton just left the stage midway

Mozart actually admired the man. Not sure why the directors thought a good idea to portray Mozart as the racist antagonist white male. Mozart didn’t care about foolish social constructs, rather he is inspired by anyone who would share the love of music. I find it hard to understand that the scene has to insult one of the greatest composers of all time to elevate someone else.

It was ultimately based on false rumors that Salieri poisoned Mozart, and in real life Salieri did falsely confess to this in old age because he had dementia. Just read The New York Times review, written by Lisa Kennedy. Usually, The New York Times has no problem dropping the hammer on inferior filmmaking. Here, however, I suspect that The New York Times attempted to avoid being tagged "racist" by skirting journalistic responsibility. Nowhere does Lisa Kennedy critique the impossibilities and flaws in this film. For instance, during a musical "battle" with Mozart, the Guadeloupe born Frenchman, Joseph Bologne, breaks into a riff on American blues music, which wasn't invented for another 100 years in 1860. Chevalier is preposterous hyperbole, making the 1984 film, Amadeus, look like a Ken Burn's documentary. Chevalier's populism undermines Joseph Bologne's contribution to musical history. Hopefully, a better film will rise from the ashes of this drivel.

It's generally agreed upon that the Della Croce painting and the Lange painting are the most accurate ones, according to his sister and his wife. Also the actor playing Mozart has a very small and thin nose. Mozart was described as having a big nose that he got from his mom.

This is not a historical film. It is not historical, because it is fiction. This scene with Mozart never happened. Further aside, as a violinst, it is unwatchable because the actor playing Bologne has terrible violin technique. I don't know how much preparation he did (he claims in interviews that he did 2 years of classical training but his bow grip says otherwise..) but it wasn't nearly enough. Maybe you can enjoy it if you don't know anything about stringed instruments, but no thanks..

The music the audience hears supposedly being played by the main character is also horribly anachronistic throughout the movie, but they knew the "dude chill" crowd will unquestioningly lap up any dreck they put out there. That's how lies get injected into the public bloodstream, which will be repeated as fact for generations.

Mozart actually did live in the same hotel as Saint-Georges for some time after his mom died in Paris. It is unknown if they met. Mozart knew about Saint-Georges and admired his work. But he also composed The Magic Flute which contains sexist and racist content in the libretto. But at the same time he didn't write the libretto; Schikaneder did. Schikaneder was much more sexist and racist than Mozart ever was. Mozart was most likely average for his time period at the worst. This scene is 100% fictionalized and thus never happened in real life. This is the only time Mozart appears in the film, and it is only there just so people don't call Saint-Georges "black Mozart" since it is unfair to compare a black man to the standards of a white man.
