First Aid Kit Pro-Tip: 1 Easy Change.
In this video I outline how I have evolved my thinking around my 'First Aid Kit' becoming a 'Care Kit' and the value that change can bring, in terms of providing more regular contact with, and in turn visibility, of my medical equipment.

It'd be great if you did a video on all the different first aid / care kits you carry, and why you carry the things you do.

Great video Craig! I just upgraded my first aid kit about a week ago. Replaced a small generic kit with a hiker specific one. More items for small burns, bug bites, etc. My only modification is to add some small tools designed to remove ticks.

Great idea Craig! I was always frustrated when taking out a group, when I'd find that none of the previous leaders had bothered to check the FAK and I'd end up being the one who had to update everything, and it all comes back to that same reasoning - not needing to use it, so not actively checking it.

Another thing that is important is that you rehearse the knowledge of how the content should be used. When something in first aid has expired or has damaged packaging, then you can open it and repeat the knowledge.

That's a pretty sound idea Craig. I do lump together my FAKs and wash stuff etc into my 'health and hygiene' kit group, but currently keep them as separate entities. Patting myself on the back a bit I'm fairly good at acting on those calendar reminders to check my stuff. I also use my 'minor problems' FAK as my ordinary household kit, so I guess it does get dipped into a little more frequently - say for an aspirin for someone else in the family for example - meaning I'm more likely to keep track of the contents. Anyway, good video and food for thought. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your own approach to this. I particularly like the idea of using your first aid kit as your household kit. I can see how that would help to ensure that it's being regularly used/checked. 👍

This is perfect for me Craig! I’m at the stage now where I need to upgrade the contents of my FAK (after I almost snagged my arm on barbed wire, the current one wouldn’t have been much help if I had ). Your guides on this have helped enormously. Many thanks.

Don’t worry too much about the expiry dates. With consumables, it refers to the wrapper and not the contents, if the bandage looks good and the package is intact its useable. As for meds, they relate to the potency/effectiveness of the pill/potion. If its OOD, its not likely to be unsafe to use, providing the packaging is intact.

Hi there and thanks for dropping by and commenting, it's really appreciated. I must admit that I carry exactly the same first aid kit if I'm out on my own, as I do if I've got my family with me. My rationale is that they're likely to encounter exactly the same injuries that I might, therefore my kit is sufficient to cover them.

Absolutely essential information on an essential part of ones kit! I too, would like to see the different "care kits" you've put together. Where I hike takes me often a few days away from any immediate help. I'm also mostly solo. Any tips I could glean to make my med. kit more effective while also streamlining would be greatly appreciated (as is this most current post)! Thanks. NOTE: I have two torpedo pockets that run down the back of my pack (Mystery Ranch Terraframe 65) where I keep my combined personal maintenance and secondary first-aid kit. Reasoning: If it's easier to access these then the condition of pharmaceuticals and related med-hardware will be better managed than if they were buried down in the pack (not to mention your great idea of a checklist which I've formalized and integrated into my pre-hike ritual). Thanks Again! 👍

Not so good in a time sensitive emergency if you need to rummage through lots of stuff. I was always told a fak should be clearly marked and quickly accessible even to others incase you are unable. Usually placed the front pocket or placed at the very top of a bag/backpack
@TheBushcraftPadawan
@TheBushcraftPadawan 9 ай бұрын
As mentioned in the video, there is nothing in this kit to cater for a 'sensitive emergency'. If I came across a casualty that has significant enough trauma to affect their ABCD then I'd have to make do with what I could improvise.

Hi Craig, have you considered or do you carry an inhaler ie salbutamol? There must be people who struggle with breathing hiking in the hills especially if they are not used to it. I always carry one. Cheers Martin
@TheBushcraftPadawan

Hi Martin, I don't carry anything like that as they're a prescription only drug here in the UK and I have no idea what the consequences might be for the person I was administering to.

In the US you can suffer criminal and civil penalties for administering any kind of drug or advanced medical care without a medical license. The exception is administering first aid to save a life. People love suing each other here in the US... Damn shame!
