I nearly did call back and ask if it was you but didn’t want to seem weird, especially if it wasn’t lol. Sounds like you a good time. I saw several climbing parties on tryfan on Saturday and most of them looked like they were people under instruction. I was just walking the north ridge and bristly. Great day and the rain held off. Plus it was very quiet on the hill but getting parked in the morning was almost impossible. Anyway hope your lad is mended now, and fighting fit. Good to see some more frequent videos from you of late! 👍🏻

Hi Craig. I just lost my Keela Hydron😮💨. I am thinking of replacing it with another one, or, Alpkit Jura, or Buffalo special 6. If you had to buy a new softshell would you go Hydron again? Cheers.
@TheBushcraftPadawan19 күн бұрын
@@tablatom I must admit, I've never worn an Alpkit jacket and it's been several decades since I've worn a Buffalo 6, but in terms of soft shells, I'm very happy with the Hydron. The only thing I might do differently is possibly buy a size larger than what I did.
@tablatom19 күн бұрын
@@TheBushcraftPadawanover all I think I will get another Hydron. I mainly mountain bike and it sounds like jackets like the Buffalo 6 are too warm for MTB’ing even in winter. I do run warm. Though there is the buffalo active lite that might be good. It was your review that got me to buy the Hydron. I think it’s a great balance of protection and lightness.

I agree about a liner keeping your sleeping bag clean, particularly in the summer, less so in winter when you're probably wearing base layers anyway. I'm not sure about using a liner for warmth though. The usual advice is to wear only base layers for sleeping to maximise lofting of the sleeping bag and try and warm yourself up before going to bed to transfer body heat as efficiently as possible into the bag, and instead put extra layers (coat, fleece, etc) over the top of the bag if needed. I would have thought warm socks and a woolly hat would be a better way of boosting the cold weather performance of a sleep system.
@TheBushcraftPadawan27 күн бұрын
I wasn't suggesting not wearing base layers, socks and a woolly hat when using a sleeping bag in lower temperatures, but a liner will definitely add to that layering principle.

What confuses me is why are coordinates (Lat & Long) used that way, Lat first (North or South) then Long (East or West), but O/S map grid refs are (East or West, (along the corridor)) first, then (North or South (up the staircase)) second, it seems counter intuitive?

Sound advice! I have over the years used many sleeping bags and liners. The liner is easy to wash and keeps the sleeping bag much cleaner. The silk liners are a little bit of luxury and very nice to sleep in but I wiggle around a bit at night and find they are not very strong often tearing at the seams. Cheaper cotton liners are not as luxurious but do the job. In very warm weather it is nice to just get into the liner and use the sleeping bag as a duvet.

A bivi don’t way much when it means you keep dry and comfy. Or just put your feet in a large dry bag that probably lines your Bergan anyway.
@TheBushcraftPadawanАй бұрын
There are certainly conditions when I would consider using a bivvy bag inside a tent, but I have to say, it would be fairly rare. Using a dry bag is certainly an option as I outline in the video. However, having tried this on many occasions, I find that the dry bag just slides off the sleeping bag during the course of the night. As it stands now, I have a bag that cannot slide off my sleeping bag foot box and is less weight and bulk than using a bivvy bag.

Good explanation, but you forgot something important. When you use the mirror compass you do it the right way with the mirror about 45°, but you forgot to align the centerline in the mirror over the center of the compass. So you can eliminated som parallax errors and augmented the accuracy of the measurement.

One night walking my dog in our local park I used the stars (Southern Cross) to orient myself and find my way home. This is in a park I walk every day. Basically I had chased the dog chasing some kangaroos and found myself in a vale or dip I hadn't ever been in before. The Southern Cross allowed me to orient myself and know which direction to head in to get to somewhere I could see my way home from. Simple but effective.

That material is not innovative just like goretex isn't. It is just a standard 2.5 layer raincoat with a fleese Liner. Which obviously performs about the same as a gortex based solution in some cercomdtances except that sometimes but not always the gortex might be able to evacuate swead faster. On the other side you have something like a parmo which has a very different set of performance charatarisics. Where it will be both dry and breadable under nearly alll circumstances, but only if you're body is hot and the environment is cold.

@philipoakley54982 ай бұрын
Also, when properly navigating out in the wilds, you should also compare feature that we see with features marked on the map. Often we can 'catch' our mistakes by seeing something in the real world and wonder if we should have seen it, and how was it indicated in the map and why hadn't we noticed. Or vice versa. It's quite common when in a car looking at a high resolution map, you pass features (e.g.lane ends) and don't see them, and then miscount where the third lane on the left actually is, and like wise you hadn't noticed a lone barn on the map but it's obvious across the fields, and by that continuous comparison you realise that you now know that you missed the lane and should turn at the next lane end.
@philipoakley54982 ай бұрын
There are two types of escape routes. Those for when you know where you are, and then those when you aren't sure where you are . For the latter case the escape routes should include a measure of ensuring that it's safe, despite the 'lost' aspects. Sometimes the escape route has to be deliberately 'long' to pick up collecting and catching features! Had a case of a colleague ending up with an 8 hour (into the night) exit after being misplaced on the Cairngorms (Moine Mhor)

Why… why… does the water need to reach the first level before utilizing, you’re repeating others - not explaining
@TheBushcraftPadawan2 ай бұрын
@@coreopolis I have explained this in another 'brown bag' video. It is to give it time for any water that is on the *outside* of the bag (assuming you've used the bag to scoop the water) to run off. If you didn't allow his to happen you'd not only be collecting water that has filtered from inside the bag but also unfiltered water from outside the bag. A question for you... Why did you have to pose your question in such a snarky way?

Three other uses: 1. You are visiting an area with no bathroom and you really have to go. Insta- shelter and a small shovel or sealable container. We carry an old plastic Folgers coffee can. Right now only used in our van for emergencies, but this bag brings new alternatives. 2. You are out hiking and want shelter from the elements to make yourself a cup of tea. 3. You are neurodivergent and at a public gathering and are feeling way too stimulated and need an instant privacy room.
