Thanks for sharing. I have a First Ascent Igniter jacket as well and i LOVE it. I admit that i share you exact same fear of the fabric ripping or snagging as well. I looked at this jacket and liked the style as well. BUT the only thing is it doesn't have a hood. I think they should make a version of this jacket WITH a hood. Cant beat the Igniter for the features AND money.

Lets see... How about a good Level 1 first aid kit like the ones USNERDOC sells, in the Lok-Sak -- nice and compact. Duct tape on an expired credit card. Streamlight Stylus pro pen light (might fit in pen holder). Fire making kit. Leatherman S2 Juice. Victorinox Super Tinker. Kel-Tec P3-AT if there's a good CCW pocket. Protein bars. Water purification tabs. Zip-Loc gallon freezer bag (for water). That oughtta do it :)

Nice Jacket for sure! I would add a mini ferro rod, pack of quick tinder,a small Package of hand warmers for you or for the guy that forgot his jacket.lol emergency water filter like the sawyer mini or one of those straws. Mylar blanket. and if you can find some energy bars that wont freeze or melt. I would stash a couple of those. I would be good for a short break down with that I think. I bet it all would fit in one of those pockets..Take care!!

I agree, even a removable hood would be nice. I would really dig a hard hat compatible hood.

BTW, that HD is absolutely stunning :)

You should look into getting a more breathable under layer besides that hoody. PLUS now your SUPER bulky. I think thats whats soo dope about the Igniter is that is has the warmth of BOTH those pieces in 1 piece WITH a hood!. Maybe First Ascent should develop a more durable outer layer.

Lefty Bowling the one gripe about Mountain ops jacket is it needs to be about 3 inches longer in the back. if you bend over to change a tire or something it rides up. the hoody works because of the huge hood, i use to block out the world while i'm on the bus going to work. I would use one of my hang fire jackets but they don't quite work as well. thanks for the comment. i haven't been on this project in some time. i hope i can get back at it.

Alright brother I was looking on EB web site bc I need a tough outer jacket for this winter. Saw the Mountain Ops and needed more info. Went to the ol' YT and your vid was first on it. Good review, my only hang up is the no hood. Plus I would be paying full price as well…you got some vids with the jacket in use ???

Stranded on the side of the road, definitely going to need a flashlight & a lighter to go with that Griptilian. :)

Buyer beware! Eddie Bauer recently "updated" this once-awesome jacket and it is a shadow of its former self. The sleeves no longer have gauntlets/cuffs, so expect a stiff breeze to blow right up your arm. Also, the pockets on both sleeves are gone. Most incredibly, the coat is no longer filled with down, so don't expect it to keep you quit so warm. The lining is also not quilted quite as well, missing altogether the diamond quilting near the base of the neck. And there is no longer a lanyard in the pocket. The one plus with the new model is that there are pockets on both sides of the chest now, rather than only the left-hand side. First Ascent has always carried a premium price and a premium reputation, but the reputation is suffering due to the cutbacks in this coat. I will no longer consider First Ascent gear without a serious once-over. By the way, it is easy to tell them apart. The old (good) jacket has a red interior, and the new one has a blue interior.

Does this jacket fit true to size does it run big for layering? I'm in between a medium and a large usually and I'm just trying to decide what size to order. I won't do much layering other than long john shirt or just your basic long sleeve. Thanks

Jerky, packet of hot sauce, lighter (BIC with the childproofing ripped off), mini pen ( I like to cut one down to fit into my swisstool holster!) and a MRE spoon or go for your BC spork.

Pavel, the hoodie is an Abercrombie and Fitch and my other jacket is the Igniter Jacket from Eddie Bauer/ First Ascent.
