I just found your channel. As a way over 50 woman, I appreciate the specificity of your posts. I have only sewn the most basic of pants due to lousy fitting technique. I can't wait to give the TDCO technique a try. Regarding dyeing fabric. Whenever possible, I order white fabric for dyeing my makes. I think I save on waste that way. I hope so, otherwise I have an awful lot of white fabric!
@JanineSews
@JanineSews Жыл бұрын
Welcome, Sandra! Thank you for watching my channel! What type of fabric do you usually buy for dying? I know that cotton will work and synthetics will not but are there others that are good choices? I haven't dyed fabric since high school art class but it sounds like something different to try.
@sandraolson7813
@sandraolson7813 Жыл бұрын
I have used linen and cotton. Cotton knits and bamboo knits will also work. I recently purchased some tencel blended stretch twill from Fabric Wholesale Direct which states that it is prepared for dyeing. I get powdered dyes for natural fabrics. There are also dyes for synthetics, but I haven't tried them. @@JanineSews

I have just finished my TDCO toile - how I laughed at the shape of my resulting pattern! Yes, at 78 I have a tummy, but not much of a bottom. I never dreamt that a pattern shaped like that would make the best toile I have ever achieved. I can't wait to cut out and sew my trousers!🌷 Janine, thank you for your excellent video explaining and demonstrating this revolutionary method.🌷

Thanks! It's absolutely worth trying. I'm now on about pair #5 using TDCO and if nothing else, I'm starting to understand why there are creases in different places. For example, the whiskers creases at the front sometimes are diminished when I add more fabric to the top of the pants towards the side seams. I think it's a good tool for your sewing kit.

Congrats on TWO pairs of pants! The struggle is real…I would suggest when you lose a little weight you remove the waistband and take some of the extra length and put the waistband back on. As you mentioned, we each get to choose where the pants fit. Another experiment if you’re up for it is to add a fly front to the pants that already work…easy peasy to do. All the best on all your endeavors.

Thank you for your support! I was thinking that I could definitely remove the waistband and move it down. Maybe I won’t throw out the pattern 😉. It’s great to make some forward progress in fitting. One of the hardest things about fitting is not being able to be ‘perfect’ after a try or two. 💕

I really appreciate hearing your experience with this method. Your delivery is clear and engaging. I had tried other fitting methods and left frustrated after using up umpty old sheets as toiles just trying to get a basic pair of straight leg pants. I tried drafting my own basic pants with two different methods, and that was horrifying. It seemed to me that the more I messed with the pattern, the worse things got. Your enthusiasm is encouraging, especially since I'm roughly of an age with you and my body type varies from the mannequin ideal. I will try to go get that magazine issue too so I can get the full deets from the author herself. I had rage quit trying to make pants, but now I feel like I might be able to get something to work if I try once more.

Thank you, Kristina. I completely understand your frustration. And it seems like once we start examining our bodies in our me-made pants, we start noticing the flaws in ready to wear. It's a bit of a vicious circle. In the video I posted on August 31, I included some links to a couple more sources for information on Top Down Center Out. Ruth is on the Sew Organised Style podcast, and what may be most helpful is the KZbin video that Jennifer Stern posted in the last few days. Jennifer is a sewing teacher and from what I understand, she does a great job of demonstrating the process and adds a couple of helpful tips. (I've only watched the first few minutes but it's on my playlist for the weekend!). I hope you'll give this method a try!

I wish I had your method when I was trying to make my pant pattern fit , but with trail and error i have one that fits I have been using it for years . I change the leg size i might put one pocket or two, zipper front or elastic band etc but I never change the body . I have one pattern for woven fabric and one for knit fabric . It saves a lot of time in change rooms .

Yay!!! I am so happy that you tried Ruth's process. I was in the middle of fitting the old-fashioned way when she first hit the 'Gram with this method, so I wasn't able to use it from inception, but I had documented all of the changes I had made to my series of 6(SIX!) toiles. I went back to toile #2, tweaked two bits, turned the legs into each other and saw where I needed a tiny bit of back length, and voila! Amazing Fit pants! You expressed so well that feeling of utter relief and confidence that comes with success, and you're right, it IS logical engineering at its core. BTW, I think she's dabbling in sleeves and armsceyes next! I used Simplicity 2860, another Amazing Fit pattern, that may be out of print. It has a fly zipper, a contoured waistband, and sits 1 1/2" below the waist. I raised mine so that the upper edge hit where I wanted it to, and I was able to complete the fitting that way. I hate straight waistbands unless they're elastic in the back. And thanks for honestly reviewing S8744; I'll avoid that one!

Tina, thank you so much for sharing your process Six (!) toiles sounds like a LOT of work and frustration but I'm so glad you wound up with something that you really love. That's a huge accomplishment! I just took a look at Simplicity 2860. That really looks like exactly what I want. It's so similar to my RTW pants from Talbots. Will see if I can find a copy online somewhere. I really appreciate you watching and sharing your process. Wonderful! So glad I found your channel. The way I have been fitting in the past was to fit the front maintaining the straight-of-grain and any darts, etc. then for the back I basically did the same but left the back seam with extra fabric for any main fitting. My waist band was two pieces in the back to allow for any of those back seam fitting issues. This method was...okay...but I really want to try this 'new' method. You see, my aging body too doesn't fit the ready-to-wear as I have issues including a spinal scoliosis that makes one pant leg longer at the side seam than the other. I am so tired of having to 'reef-up' my pants at the back after I sit down. I like pants that fit at the waist because they hang better (from my point of view) so I am anxious to try this method for sewing pants. I absolutely hate trying on pants in the store and really want to have a sloper I can use that I don't have to 'mess' with for fitting...cut and sew and go. (I used to live in Calgary and went to the Stampede every year.)

It sounds like your method is very similar to the one Ruth describes. Someone on Instagram asked her about the challenges of fitting when your body is not symmetrical (although none of us are perfectly symmetrical) and I believe she said that you would have to work with a full toile. It adds a bit more time to the process but I think we would all agree that a well fitting pair of pants is worth the extra time! Gosh, well fitting pants seems like a dream sometimes, doesn't it? Thanks, Janine. I just have gotten out my Threads issue that I got this summer and hadn’t gotten around to reading yet. I am now making some McCalls cropped pants with an elastic waist out of a linen blend that I got awhile ago and made the first ones a little too big. They are wearable now, but if I lose a little weight they might just fall right down. I have started another pair and I’m making them a little smaller and keeping my fingers crossed. When I’m finished with them I will try making some pants for fall using this new method. I have high hopes that this will work well.

I’m a new subscriber here today on Friday. Also somewhat new to sewing. I finally got a pair of pants to fit from crotch up after so so much work. I’m 68 and have all those problems you talk about & no one to help. My biggest problem is wide hips,tummy, and legs slim down. Store bought pants and pants I sew from crotch down looks like sails from a sailboat. I’m going to rush out & get that magazine. Making pants by yourself is a real booger so I’m hoping this is the answer. I made my first shift type of dress and being first time it’s not perfect either but with sweater or jacket it will be fine. It’s a learning process and I know what to fix on pattern.

Hi Victoria! Thanks so much for watching my channel! I have not been sewing that long (about 6 years) and I wear the shift dress that was the first garment I had sewn in over 30 years. It's not perfect either, but it is fine and it is so rewarding to wear something you have made for yourself. I know your sewing will improve! It truly just takes a bit of practice so you gain some confidence and then sewing one row at a time. Hope to see you again soon!

@JanineSews 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Linda! I used the mirrors in my bathroom. They are not full-length, just counter height but I just stood far enough away to get a good view down my leg. I do have a single mirror on the other wall although it's a bit angled so if I stood in the right place I could see the back without having to turn my body. When I wanted to check the length I went to the one full-length mirror in the house and I used a handheld mirror to check the back. Where there's a will! 😁

@JanineSews
@JanineSews Жыл бұрын
Hi! Sorry for the delayed response. With this method, you get a good idea of the hem amount needed when you're making the half toile so I would probably leave the extra length there until you make the other fit changes. (As you mention, the length/hem is last.) For me, in the past I always just added length to pants when I cut them out because I have a long inseam. But I haven't had to do that once with this method. Instead, in most cases I have added to the top instead.

@JanineSews
@JanineSews 8 ай бұрын
On my muslin pieces, I mark the cutting line for the size (or sizes) that I think will work. For example, if I think that an 18 and a 20 are the best size choices, I mark those sizes using a sharpie. And I'll make a note beside each line because sometimes I forget what sizes I chose (lol). Then I cut the fabric larger on the top and the outside. On the top, I add two inches, and on the side, I make the seam allowance an inch. I also mark the lengthen/shorten lines on every piece, and I mark the grainline (although that's not necessary). I construct the waistband and run a line of stitches along the seam line where the pants are to be attached to the waistband. This gives me a good guideline for when I'm pinning the pants to the waistband. The Crooked Hem has a really good series and she does a much better job of explaining than I do!

@JanineSews thank you! The part that is missing is the steps AFTER the leg is hung on the waist band. What is the technique to mark the actions taken on the toile to manipulate it into fitting one's body? (So that THE ADJUSTMENT ACTIONS can be remembered later when transferring them on to a real pattern?
@JanineSews
@JanineSews 8 ай бұрын
@@GailDulay Here's what I do (although others likely do it differently). Hope this helps! • Once I'm happy with the pinned adjustments, I stitch those seam lines using a long stitch and again try on the garment to ensure that everything is correct. Sometimes I make more tweaks at this time. • Then I take my Sharpie and mark the stitching lines on the muslin fabric. It helps to have a different coloured Sharpie or pen for this step. • After the stitching lines are drawn, I use a ruler to add the seam allowances using whatever seam allowance the pattern calls for (to ensure consistency). I have a couple of seam allowance rulers, a 5/8" one from StitchBuzz.com, and one in metric from JennHogg.co.uk. They make it much faster to mark the seam allowances but you could also use your seam gauge. • Then I cut the muslin pieces along the seam allowance lines and use those muslin pieces as my new pattern pieces for the waistband, front, and back.
