Today I'm catching the NSW TrainLink Xplorer Train from Sydney Central Railway Station to Canberra Kinston Railway Station. The Xplorer train is one of the fastest trains in Australia. The first train was built in 1993 in Victoria.
This time I'm going to travel in First Class, in this video, I will show you the facilities onboard this train, the beautiful NSW countryside landscape, and most importantly the safety precautions that NSW Trainlink take amid this Coronavirus Pandemic. Enjoy!

As a Canberran, I've done this trip multiple times. They would absolutely make BANK if they simply put in free wifi and power sockets at each seat. If they did that, they would be able to bite into the travel market for public servants/political hangers-on, many of whom would LOVE to be able to work the whole trip.

Ah nice to see go ole Campbelltown and Macarthur stations. I used to live that area up till 2017. If you are able, I would suggest travelling on an Endeavour DMU. They are mechanically the same the Xplorer in this video, but designed more for regional commuter services. They travel around Hunter Valley, between Sydney and Bathurst (I live near there now), Campbelltown and Moss Vale (both station are shown in this video), and in the Illawarra between Bombaderry and Nowra. You may also be interested to know that there has been a push, for decades, to electrify the line between Macarthur and Moss Vale...or at least as far as Bowral.

Canberra has a population of 457000, and thus is a very small capital city. Both Sydney and Melbourne have over 4000000 each. The land was made Crown Land, and became known as the Australian Capital Territory, in 1911. Construction began in 1913. Edit: It's also worth noting that Canberra is a fair distance from any other major city, with Sydney about 286km away, and Melbourne being about 662km away. It's also not on any major rail or road transport routes.

I'm pretty sure none would have their only station so ridiculously located. The train (4-4.5 hr) takes longer than the bus (3-3.5hr) to get to Sydney, and you have to get out to Kingston. Its just not worth it, even if a touch more comfortable. And buses are much, much more frequent.

But you can also catch bus R2 from Kingston station to the city The bus runs every 15mins I used to catch Murrays all the time but after trying out the train I’m catching the train instead. It takes longer but it is more fun 😂

Watching this video was like revisiting my travel from Sydney to Canberra, a decent travel, one will get very impatient during the last hour of this journey. The Canberra train station is very far from the city, buses would be a good option as they go into the city and they are much faster. When you travel first time from the huge Sydney Central Station to the small Canberra station, the difference will surprise you.
@RoryDing
@RoryDing 3 жыл бұрын
The train has more space tho especially now they only sell 50% of the seats so you get an empty seat next to you Murrays is too pricey now $45 one way, $65 if you want an empty seat next you. The seat is very uncomfortable It’s not that far, R2 now stops right outside the trains ration so it’s not a big deal to get to the city.

@Shiva Av what Rory said. Right now the train is a better option, and the bus stop near Kingston is only far if you have heavy luggage.
@avshiva
@avshiva 3 жыл бұрын
@@hieronymusboschful yes agree, the bus stop is a good option when there is no luggage, particularly for the train arrivals during the day as the bus stop is just outside the station, the first time I took the evening train it reached Canberra by around 9:30 PM I guess, I also had couple of luggage, it was winter and it was cold and I had to take a taxi from the train station, interestingly there weren't enough taxis for all passengers, people had to wait for a taxi in the cold.

Re SydneyCanberra: Comparing 'travel time' between modes can be misleading. > Train is pleasant, but slow; plus limited connections for the 6+kms from Canberra Station into city centre. > With coach from Sydney's Central Station - you can rock up 10 mins before departure (no security check), then arrive virtually in heart of Canberra's city centre. > BUT, to properly compare flying, you have to add in travel from Central Station to airport, + lodging luggage (often queues), + going through security (more queues), + need to be there up to an hour before departure, then add waiting for unloading of passengers and bags at Canberra airport, then wait for the 'Rapid 3' bus into town (every 30 mins in off-peak, you might just miss one!), then 20 mins travel on that bus. Makes the total time much longer than the actual flying time of 45 minutes. > When you compare price of the comfortable coach VERSUS prices of flight and connections (plus all the stress of Sydney's busy, crowded airport), the coach trip wins easily on value. and almost wins on time. [ It's the only between-capital-cities travel in Australia where flying can be more hassle than it's worth. ]
@RoryDing
@RoryDing 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve done all three of them numerus times Between Canberra and Sydney Compared to the bus, the flight saves 1h time. The bus wins on value, there’s wifi. When I travel with Murrays tho in order to get a window seat I had to rock up 30mins before departure. Also the M5 is usually congested after 4 so the bus usually takes 50mins extra If you leave Sydney in the afternoon The train is 1h slower than the bus, but because of covid, they only sell 50% of the seats, so there’s no one sitting next to me plus I can walk around on the train so the train becomes the most comfortable option for me (the new timetable R2 now stops at Canberra Kingston station)

The track between Sydney & Goulburn is very hilly with lots of curves. Once past Goulburn the track straightens out . I last travelled on that lines 25 years ago. I believe the track conditions have deteriorated in that time. Australia would be an ideal country for high speed rail but politicians just aren’t interested in spending any money on rail.
@jashugg
@jashugg 3 жыл бұрын
As much as I love trains, I disagree that Australia would be ideal for high speed trains. The small population spread so far apart makes the necessary infrastructure prohibitively expensive. If everyone in Australia lived in Victoria high speed trains could make sense.

The age and condition of these intercity trains gives you an idea as to how seriously all Australian governments, both state and federal, are about bringing the rail network into the 21st century. A similar journey, in kilometres, in any other country would take less than 2 hours. The road transport industry in this country has a lot to answer for as they are the main opponents to rail infrastructure.
@tacitdionysus3220

You're dreaming. Australia is ideal for air travel, not rail, and Sydney in particular is surrounded by very difficult (expensive) terrain for rail (Blue Mtns, Hawkesbury and Southern Highlands). Rail in Australia was built to carry produce to market, much of it in a time when the only competition was bullock drays on rough unsealed roads. It didn't have to be fast to compete. WW2 changed everything. During 1942 hundreds of military aerodromes were constructed which formed the basis for post-war aviation facilities. Most country two airports evolved from these, many more reverted to farmland or were turned into developments (e.g. around Sydney that would include Schofields, Hoxton Park, Menangle, Rooty Hill and others. The amount of money needed for high speed tracks (the trains are the least of the problem) would mean the real cost of rail fares would be many times that for airlines or road vehicles. The Canberra line was originally the rail line for construction materials for Canberra. It wasn't intended as the ultimate passenger line and it isn't good for that. These days it might be possible to run a faster route along the motorway corridor from Macarthur to Goulburn, then a new line through to Canberra (e.g. terminating at the Airport), but don't hold your breath. It's noticeable that the new Sydney Western Airport has no plans for a regional rail terminal connecting airlines directly to regional rail. On the plus side, NSW Trains actually does quite a good job with their stations. Most are modern, clean and have modest but good facilities, including access for folk with disabilities. South East Australia (Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne and in between) has about the same population density as Scandinavia. Replicating something similar to their rail systems in the area will probably happen. Can't see something like a French or German system here. Japan is often cited and certainly has many fast lines; but what is often missed is that they also have lots of conventional regional rail lines, not unlike that to Canberra. Victoria has much better terrain for fast rail than NSW, and will probably be the first to develop it fully.

Hi I don’t think there’s a sales counter actually you always have to book the tickets in advance. You can either call NSW TRAINLINK or book online on their website.

yep made 3 trips to canberra june-oct 2020, all through nsw train link but 2 of the 3 trips (including returns) were by coach due to rona. considerably quicker to the point where a food service and comfort arent even really a factor. chuck on a movie and youre hitting the federal highway by the time its done. also had the fortune on one of the trips to be the sole occupant of the bus (apart from the driver of course). the train in first class is fine, but bus is definitely better.

I like the train but the coach is also good. The seats on the bus (Murrays) were comfortable & the drivers all very good. If not in a hurry the train trip is nicer because you can get up & walk around plus the scenery is better from the train. I think both are preferable to driving though

This should be one of the most used trains in the country. It's not. Maybe if our state government INVESTED in this train like proper food, faster trains, more frequent trips, it would be. Instead we get way overdue regional trains that will eventually run LESS often. Too bad the country doesn't have enough marginal seats!!

It's a fucking joke! This train should only stop at Campletown, Bowral, Moss Vale, Goulburn and Bungendore before Queenbean. Local services should run frequently between all other stations to link up! The catering Facilities should not be closed at any time on route.
