That submarine warfare was featured in Star Trek 2, the Wrath Of Khan. Spock pointed out to Kirk that Khan displayed two dimensional thinking in attacking the Enterprise. Kirk, being an experienced starship captain, maneuvered in all three dimensions and defeated Khan.
