I cannot imagine anything more frustrating than being compared to yourself and coming in second best and yet Kralik hangs in there

You do have to fight for what you want at times. People are always in want of greener pastures. Close proximity like working together for an employer can cause lots of conflicts. A person can be treated like they're stupid, slow and unattractive while outside of work treated like they're quite intelligent and a good catch. Being considered insignificant is a lonely life while being considered significant can be the most satisfying when earned.

I love how Jimmy’s expression changes when she gives him that final insult, you can see the insult sink in, and then the mask slips and pain shows. Oof, it always gets me. If I were Miss Novak I would’ve quickly babbled apologies.

I was wondering why some dialogues in "You've got mail" struck a chord but felt thoroughly misplaced. And bam! The cigarette lighter that doesn't work and the interesting mixture of poetry and meanness makes so much more sense and is more beautiful here.

Yes, but I've just watched You've Got Mail again and was more impressed by it this time. However, I would dearly love to see this film again; it's one of my favourites, along with The Philadelphia Story. James Stewart was wonderful.

In movies, and especially in the thirties when the talkies have taken place for not so long, you rarely hear an actor uses his voice fluctuating with emotions as if it was a character itself in which you can almost see the expressions just by hearing the actor's voice and the using of phonetics with each letter (except offcourse for singers actors). James Stewart, apart from his superb talent, brilliantly used his tender voice in each letter and words litterally to express the wanted emotions as if you see through his soul, and you can see it came innately to him not enforced at all, just how amazing actor and human being he was with no one to compare at all. RIP James Srewart.

I agree. The chemistry and witty dialogue in this movie are superior and engaging. The characters both know how to use the push/pull of flirting. Flirting is a bit of a lost art, especially in these sensitive times.

Too much of bickering leading to personal attacks can be damaging, be it friendship or a relationship. Romantic comedies are an exception though... Things are often quite opposite in real life! However the acting of both James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan in this sequence is indeed perfect.

I’ve never watched any movies from this era, nor this genre. I was staying at a friends and we were watching a film on some dodgy website as we passed out to sleep. Apparently the website auto played random films/videos afterwards. I woke up in the middle of the night and this was on, this was the first scene I saw and I watched it until the end. I really enjoyed it but it felt like a fever dream, especially since there was no way to know what the film was nor how to search it. I ended up using an AI by giving it the plot of it and it knew it instantly and here I am. Will have to watch again. If any film lovers can point me in the right direction of similar films I would love to give them a try. :)

I'd recommend The Philadelphia Story (1940) or Vivacious Lady (1938) , both romcoms starring Jimmy Stewart also.

The plot in Shop Around the Corner is more sophisticated than in You've Got Mail. Here Alfred Kralik has to overcome the personal dislike that Klara Novak has for him; in Email for You, Kelly doesn't like Fox because he pushes her out of business. Personally, she actually has nothing against him.

Yes, far too curt and dry with not an ounce of female charm. I imagine that the character was deliberately made like this to contrast strongly with that of James Stewart which was the exact oppsosite, but from the spectator's point of view it leaves one annoyed and dissatisfied. However this defect is more than compensated for by all of the other characters in the film who "bowled me over". That was a superb line-up and gave the film an unmeasurable charm !
