I'm from Finland. A bit over 20 years ago I dated a girl whose father owned a cottage in Levi. Every year while we were dating we visited Levi. Loved the place. As a student with minimal income I could only dream about going to Levi because the accomondation at that time was definitely out of reach for me financially. As a guy who loves to ski those days we spent in Levi was about the best days I spent with her. Now she's my wife with kids. Still visiting the same cottage a couple of times a year annually. :)

Levi is real play ground for all kind and age of people. Been there almost 30 times and on the week 11 Levi is calling us again! It always feels like getting back home. The pistes are amazing and the place in general is a definition of word "COZY". You can make a holiday of your liking. You can have peaceful time there or party like hell. Kids are also very well noticed.

Levi is the name of the fell (a hill without trees on top) and also of the resort. The center of the resort is the village of Sirkka (permanent population of c. 600). All this belongs to the municipality of Kittilä (total pop. c. 6,600. The center of Kittilä is the Church village (pop. c. 2,300), which is 17 km South from Levi. None of those places are cities or even towns.

Tips: 1) go and ski South Point, will be the perfect fit. You can also take the ski bus there 2) for real Saami food and experience, go to Saamen Kammi restaurant, the best. Also Lost Tacos has the best Baja Fish Tacos in Finland and 3) make sure that you DO NOT miss the Levi Spa and its outdoor pools.

Most people who go to Levi probably stay in a rented cottage. So the area is actually much bigger than the center where the hotels/shops/restaurants are.
@JacobandJennyTravel2 жыл бұрын
That is good to know! Thanks for your comment :)

Yeah rhe "greater Levi" is surprisingly big, google says the resort can accommodate 24,000 people, mostly in cabins. Finns come later in spring typically, more day light and still plenty of snow. The resort actullly store snow over the short summer for the next season, so the slopes are ready for the World Cup in November.

In addition to Ylläs, there is another gorgeous slope about 40 mins drive away: Pallas is the most iconic place for skiing in Lapland and has most beautiful scenery, but has only 2 lifts and one old hotel (as it's in a national park). It opens in mid-February for week 8 when the school holidays begin. The busy weeks in Lapland ski resorts are from week 8 to the end of April, before that it's very quiet apart from world cup in Levi. Before week 8 the day is very short, but in April it's very long and it may also get very sunny. Don't bother to visit Pallas in cloudy or snowy days, you need a bit sun to see enough for good skiing! There you also get excellent Finnish food in the hotel restaurant (in the dinner time = about after 5 p.m.). Avoid school holiday weeks 8 - 9 in Levi and Ylläs, they're horribly crowded then! Pallas is never crowded:).

Kotipizza is a Finnish pizza restaurant chain, the only nationwide chain in Finland, so it was a great choice in terms of Finnish culture 😉 But kebab-pizzeria places are also super common. You might've seen the Berlusconi pizza on the menu, a pizza with reindeer and chanterelles, which won the America's Plate International pizza contest in NYC in 2008.

Actually Ylläs about 45km is much bigger. Bigger Mountain (tunturi) and much longer slopes. But Levi is really nice. My habbit is to go Levi for one week (some partys) and then real skiing in Ylläs. Ylläs is way bigger than Levi.
@JacobandJennyTravel2 жыл бұрын
That is good to know! We should go there some day. Thanks for the information :)

Ylläs is bigger physically. It is higher and bit more vertical difference but Levi has more pistes and lifts.
