Shot using a pre-production Panasonic HC-X1 camcorder, using a tweaked Filmlike3 Scene file and 4K 50p (150Mbit/s MOV). I created this setting to make as much of an organic look from the X1 as possible. All clips are edited and conformed to 4K 25p in post (50% slow-mo). Grading in Filmconvert Pro, edited in Final Cut Pro X. More info later.

Thanks! Sounds great, looks like it should be in out in a few weeks from now, from what I heard. Hope you'll like the camera, I am very happy with the results I've been working on so far. This was my first attempt at creating a more "raw" film profile to perform heavy grading and post work, but I'll head on and shoot some more stuff with the stock Cine-D and Cine-V profiles, and check how well it grades with the GH4 and FZ2000 etc. :)

Thank you for your interest, it's for weddings. I had ag-hmc-151, and unfortunately I got used to the autofocus that worked very well in that camera, now I'm very hesitant to buy because the sensors bigger to obtain shallow depth of field and cinematic effect, has a more critical focus and From what I see in the comments the af does not go very well at all. I am now studying the dvx-200, which seems to you in comparison to hc-x1, thanks.
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 жыл бұрын
Well, the DVX200 will not serve you better in the AF-department, I'd say the HC-X1 is pretty much the sweet spot in that regard. I've been shooting quite a bit of footage with this cam so far, and I'm really impressed with how well the AF works. One really good feature is the smooth manual AF-override, where you can pull focus in full AF to override when the camera is getting it wrong. I don't see much hunting at all, the only issue sometimes the cam might not understand which of the subjects you as a creator want in focus, which is of course impossible. Bear in mind that although the sensor is relatively large compared to traditional 1/3" and 1/2" videocams, the sensor size is mostly compensated for with larger aperture zoom lens, and this cam has f/2.8 to 4.5 on the zoom range. Another really good feature of the professional Panasonic camcorders, included in the X1, is the "EVF/LCD Detail" setting in the display menu, that puts a slightly oversharpened look to the viewfinder. It makes a huge difference when working with shallow DOF and pulling/checking focus, specially with 4K footage. The same feature is in the legendary TVlogic WFM-056 monitors, called "aperture" and in my opinion that is a lot better than most "peaking" features out there, because it's not in the way of composing your shot... I often find peaking very obtrusive, while the slight oversharpening/halo effect does not add any colors or "masking" effects to your vision of the scene, it just "pops" when you peak sharpness on your subject. You should try it pointing the camera towards a lawn sometime, then you'll know what I mean. :)

I'd been waiting for a truly worthy run and gun camera to replace my Sony Z5, but it had to live up to the footage I was filming with the GH2/3/4. The spec on the X1 was amazing and your footage clinched it for me BIG THANK YOU FOR POSTING. Got mine delivered this week and would say the plastic feels cheap and menu is not pretty, but the OIS, AF, 24mm wide etc are amazing, and having that 20x zoom, NDs, 2xSD and easy audio levels will be a delight. Now I just need to try and conform colour settings with the GH4 etc. Keep posting! Cheers - J

Looks a good all-in-one camcorder. I currently have the Panasonic G80/85 plus lots of MFT lenses. So far, the image quality looks great-how do you reckon it will compare with the HC-X1? I prefer actually using a camcorder than DSLR/DSLM type camera for video for a few reasons; ergonomics, button/dial layout, body design, built in zoom lens, internal ND filters, no 'lens breathing' when you pull/rack focus etc. I also have the Canon Legria/Vixia HF-G30 which is pretty good quality for most situations (no 4K though) so it would be a big leap price wise to go up to the HC-X1-any advice?
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 жыл бұрын
I shoot most of my stuff on the Lumix G and GH series, which is my prefered type of camera, coming from the stills world. But in fact, this is the first camcorder type camera that I really enjoy shooting and editing. It's like the perfect match of optimized workflow for 8-bit "on the go" recording, no fuzz, also great, great 4K 50p footage coming out of this camcorder making it pretty unique for the price point. I will say that the G80 and some really good lenses really can outperform the X1, but that's an unfair comparison, really. Most of the magic that you create with any mirrorless/DSLR camera is within the lenses you use. But I sure think that the X1 is a really good complementary camera to the G80. To cover lots of different scenarios, you need both systems. :)

@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
The HC-X1 is significantly better than the UX-90, in fact at all aspects. For the subtle price difference, you will get a much more capable camera with the X1 (4K @ 60p, global framerates, full wide angle in 4K 24mm vs 35mm, 4K DCI, longer lens with same f/2.8-4.5 range, and better low-light performance from the sensor).

As it goes in low light ?, better than the x1000?And autofocus?
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
Much better than X1000 in low-light, AF is very reliable for a large sensor camera. The 1inch sensor is sampled at its native 4K resolution, and not cropped in 4K like many similar camcorders from other manufacturer. The X1000 has a significantly smaller sensor at 1/2" and this one is native 4K on the chip, so that makes a huge difference in low-light and depth of field.

Fin film! Sku vara intressant att höra dina tankar om kameran och om var en camcorder som denna har sin plats i dagens läge när fältet är exponerat av MILCs och DSLRs med större bildcensorer...
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
Hej Henrik, tack!

bonjour could you compare please PANASONIC DVX200 with the new panasonic UX 90 , UX 180 and HCX1… DVX200 has 4/3 sensor but do not have HDR recording mode and the others panasonic have 1inch sensor but maybe with HDR the quality of pictures are nearly the same …..and even maybe in low light (concert , street , sunset…)…thank you very much… Tobias from caribbean (do you think with a firmware DVX200 could do HDR too?)

Ok, thanks for answering, I want to buy one of them and I did not know which one, GH5, Sonyy x70, UX-90 and hc-x1 ....... what I do not understand is how the gh4 will be 422 10 bits and hc- X1 420 8 bits, anyway .......
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
No worries, the cameras you mention here are some very differently pitched products. The GH4 is 10bit only through HDMI, and the HC-X1 really is geared towards internal capture on SD-card, and it's a great option for a "stand alone" camcorder. It's quite unique too with 4K 60p shooting with great quality and a very competitive price point. Bringing 10bit to the X1 really would be pushing it. The GH5 is going to be a bomb in its own when it hits the market, with 4K 10bit 4:2:2 internal and 4K 60p as well. I'd say if you look for something truly universal and top of the line, wait for the GH5... If you look for something very capable "out of the box" get the HC-X1. It depends a lot more on your shooting preferences, what kind of image you're after, and how prefer to work with the camera. With a GH5 you need to factor in lenses, accessories, rigs etc. while the X1 is ready to shoot straight off the bat. Good luck with your choices! Cheers!

This was shot in 4k? To me, it just looks like good 1080. It looks good but definitely doesn't have the 4k "pop" that Sony's have today. Maybe it's just the limitation of it's 1:1 sensor readout. (Sony often oversamples and scales down to 4k)
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
Well Cliff, sorry for my language but that's a load of crap. First of all, this doesn't look like good 1080p, not even 4K downscaled to 2K unless you're watching it on a 1080p screen! I graded it on a 50" 4K monitor and it looked great. And like I mentioned in the description, I used a much tweaked Scene File just to take it down from that hideous, over-sharpened video look that you seem to refer to with the Sony's that really "pop". Detail was dialed down a lot for this and some scenes were shot wide open intentionally. Someone else might shoot this camera at its default settings in "Normal" and you will definitely get the pop you're after, but I personally think that's what the problem is when people get their hands on 4K cameras, cranking up the sharpness takes all the beauty off the shot. When did you see such "pop" in 35mm film? Big difference between applied sharpness and amount of detail...
@clifftotten1116
@clifftotten1116 8 жыл бұрын
Well Martin, that is very key information that you have typed above. If you took measures to lower a "hideous, over-sharpened video look" and that "detail was dialed down a lot for this" than certainly that would explain the cause for my observation and comment above.....which seems justified so, it's NOT a "load of crap" after all. ;-) You did a nice job and it's a pretty look. The one thing about capturing detail? Always try to get the absolute most that you can in the field. Throwing detail away in post is very easy but trying to gain more detail in post is always impossible if it's already gone.. And it goes without saying that "detail" has absolutely nothing to do with "sharpness". Very nice work Martin. CT
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
Alright Cliff, Thanks for your kind words. Sorry for being bold in my first reply, well I was referring to the general statement that Sony's would have a certain 4K pop, and nothing else. I have shot and processed footage on enough Sony (and other) 4K cameras to conclude it's all up to the videographer, choice of gamma and matrix etc that makes the image pop, than brand specific formula and science. Enough about that, I would correct myself that rather than taking down the detail level in camera, I am always seeking to dial down any in-camera enhancements to a level where the internal processing is doing as little as possible to add selective filtering and detail masking in the image, for the footage to come out "as is" without luma selective detail coring, master detail, skin tone filtering etc that all together adds up to create the so called dreaded video look from camcorders default matrixes. I agree with you to some extent that always try to get the most out in the field of course, but only in terms of exposure, color balance, highlight protection and dynamic range. For when it comes to added sharpness, local contrast and noise reduction, these are definitely a lot easier to apply than to throw away in post! Artefacts introduced by sharpening algorithms are virtually impossible to get away with in post, but an image that is minimally processed in camera is so much easier to enhance detail to if needed in post. I am using a simple unsharp mask effect created in Motion to add sharpness to soft footage in FCPX. With the right amount and radius/mask, it is so hugely effective that 2.5K Cineform/ProTune footage that I occasionally shoot from a drone with a GoPro Hero 3+ without any extra sharpening applied in camera, is blending in so well with the other pristine 4K footage in the timeline when using unsharp mask, that most viewers would not tell the difference! Magic happens when you go below 1.0 pixel radius in the unsharp mask and crank up the amount. And then of course we all have personal taste, and I totally respect that. But these are my personal views based on experience and working with loads of different cameras. :) Cheerio!
@inc55
@inc55 8 жыл бұрын
Not to be an ass but I agree completely with Cliff. I have watched this footage on my 5K iMac and the detail is just not there. I'm really interested in buying this camera in December VS the Z150 and I would appreciate some out of the box footage.

Yeah, Martin explained how he softened it to create the look he wanted which is very nice. However, I too love that Sony A6300/6500 over sampled maximum 4k resolution look. I do tend to enjoy that "eye-popping...wow!" experience. I like to see the antennas moving on a tiny ant far way in a scene. I dont know,...all that visual information is just interesting to me. It makes the image closer to "real life" I guess. But hey, that's just me. I can also certainly appreciate any image, even a 1080 or 720 one too.

@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 жыл бұрын
I think this camera is doing really well in terms of noise compared to it's rivals. Please bear in mind that the footage was recorded with a custom profile with goal on putting it all out there, NR and detail enhancements was dialed all the way down. I much personally prefer some "grain" in the footage and good DR than digitally smeared noise and blown highlights. Also note that when shooting contrasty scenes and using a scene file that's optimized purely for dynamic range, there will be more noise in those scenes. Same as shooting film and push-processing in development. I also added some film grain to the highlights in this footage to make it more look like film. :)

the video was ok... but I really HATE the way that youtube takes a video posting and reduces it. As I watched I kept seeing all kinds of square pixels muddying up the footage. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the filmmaker who did that. That is coming from the compression engine that youtube uses before posting a video. It's a compression engine that drastically reduces the digital information on any video that is uploaded and posted on youtube. The result is videos of very poor and low quality. There are issues of video tearing and video smearing and serious issues of image quality degradation, including gross pixilation of footage, especially lowlight videos. The youtube compressor takes any color noise from darkly lit footage and only exasperates and augments it during the compression process. This results in really shitty looking footage. It's already bad enough that they add and include so damned many ads on our videos. Then they ruin our videos by over compressing and making them small and useless to watch. For these and so many more annoying reasons I don't use youtube for my video posts anymore. I go directly to vimeo.com and upload my videos there. The quality of the videos uploaded and posted there beats anything on youtube bar none...
