We're busy working on multiple things on the farm. Preparing the barn for the boat build, clearing up in the garden and making it pretty. Then we drive to Denmark to meet the naval architect and we get to see some 3D drawings of RAN III.
We are a Swedish family who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on KZbin. Our boat and home is a Najad 440 from 1988. We post a new episode every Friday so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be the first to know when there is a new episode!

Just want to thank you both for taking us along on such a great journey. It is an inspiration to watch how you have a vision and are not afraid of such an endeavor. For many what seems to be an impossible task you show that patience and proper planning erase ‘im’ from the word and leave only ‘possible’

We spent a few years to refit a boat in a barn in western Sweden starting around the year 2000. A few lesson learned; when the barn is being painted, everything inside will get red stripes. Do not paint the top coat when the fields are being harvested unless you want a very matte and grippy finish. A roof hoist is very helpful to move equipment and move material. If I had started the project today I would invest in a cnc router that can take full sheets of plywood. I can set it up for you if you want :)

I trust that the Barn roof is not constructed from asbestos tiles / sheets. A total ban on the use of asbestos was put in place in Australia some years ago due to the direct links to a pulmonary and nasty diseaese , asbestosis a very insidious disease. If found in a house elaborate protections are put in place around the entire house whilst it is removed. Continue to enjoy your videos and your courage in undertaking an immense building project in a new boat. 👀😁

A 50fter is quite an undertaking. I've built a few small boats and three houses by myself and for me they've always ended up taking nearly twice as long as expected. A small 40-50hp diesel tractor with a front end loader would be very useful to you for moving materials, lifting, mowing, grading, etc. You'd be surprised how useful one can be. Best of luck to you both!

That's so fantastic that you are working with Ulf. I was under contract to buy a beautiful Scandi 52 near Stockholm, in 2020 right before Covid started. Sadly, Covid made the deal impossible, and I had to walk away from it. Really cool design, I still get sad sometimes that I couldn't buy it. I ended up buying a Farr 50 Pilothouse, which has some similar features but has inferior pilothouse/deckhouse visibility, but part of me will always regret not getting the Scandi.

Such a lovely place to call home and what a barn! Huge! Look forward to seeing how your boat will be constructed. I helped a little with building a 37 foot mahogany runabout a number of years ago. Amazing how light and strong a few layers of strips of wood can be with epoxy saturation. Once finished and covered with fiberglass it was as smooth as could be. We cut the strips from standard stock on a band saw which allowed making varied width, depth and length for the strips. Saved a ton of money buying rough stock. As always thank you for this channel!

Boatbuilding it seems contains life lessons. Deciding what is most important and not subject to compromise--- even the size of the mast for the sails and windspeed for the design of the hull. It all starts with our needs and wants judgments. It will interesting to see how your long held values will play out in this process. What you have said so far in this video makes good sense.

I am very impressed with your plan and hope to become a supporter. I noticed in your closeup of the barn wood that you have or had an infestation of what we call in the USA, Powder Post Beetles. They made all those holes in the wood timbers and can weaken the wood. They can be treated with a borate solution if they are still active. If you hit the timber with a hammer and sawdust falls out the holes it can confirm bug activity. Treating the wood can help your resale value and maybe keep the bugs out of the boat.

I like your basic list of features. Beam carried aft, square bow, large square house ( but not too boxy I hope), stocky rig, etc. The longer shallower keel is interesting. Love the lines of the hull - she looks fast. I’d also be considering a skegged rudder as apposed to spade for a sturdy cruising boat. Of course, boat design is all about compromise as you say. Looking forward to the build. That should provide a few years of entertainment! 🙂
