I have finally had my first drive of the new Cupra Born and I will tell you straight away it's a car I could see myself buying ! I has very cool styling and underpinnings similar to the VW ID3. A choice of 204 or 230PS motors, 58 or 77 kWh battery packs and 3 trim levels. Prices range from £35k to £42k.
The big question is what does it drive like ? Well thanks to Cupra UK I got to drive the 204PS V3 from the very impressive Gridserve charging station in Braintree.

Right language, pitch, pauses, you do a very good job in this review. The car seems to be all you say, hope you get 1 week loan to do the next level video, 700-1000 kilometers and feedback. I am thinking about getting one, either my Toyota hybrid leasing runes out or sooner. Lots of interesting things in this car apart from looks, the coils and suspension stands... Well done Cupra.

This the one I have been waiting for. We've had Minis for almost 20 years but as they won't produce a Clubman Cooper SE, I'll go back to Cupra - I had a Leon Cupra Turbo back in 2003 and loved it.

Very nice Pete. I love the set up and the styling is on point. I agree with the bigger battery pack, where I live in country NSW Australia 🇦🇺 there’s not much in terms of infrastructure to service an EV. In my future, when I move closer to the coast; I can see a EV sport hatchback in my life, I reckon Cupra is on the top of the list. Cheers Matt from Australia 🇦🇺

Historically an Audi family I test drove the Q4 with a view to changing my Q3 and was singularly underwhelmed on many levels. We have had a Q7 hybrid and currently an e-tron both of which were/are superb but I appreciate a price point beyond the Q4. So as part of my research following some reviews, I test drove the V3 and found it a great drive. I thought the augmented screen display would be irritating but wasn't - not sure If that would be the case in the dark. In short I have ordered and am awaiting my new Cupra Born V3 77kWh battery version in the aurora blue (glad this has had a positive reception!) and on the advice of the family have the e-boost and added the heat pump. I feel I could go to most of the places I will need to without worry. In fact if I was driving over 200 miles I would be stopping for a break anyway. We drove to Cornwall in the e-tron which has a 240 mile range and just planned appropriate coffee and lunch stop to recharge so the longer range of the Cupra will be a bonus. Many years ago I had. a VW Golf and the Cupra puts me in mind of that - great for around town driving but comfortable enough for a motorway run. As always there are compromises and in the Cupra its probably the controls on the screen which several reviews say takes some getting used to. Can't wait to get and start driving it!

Great review. I happen to drive my own in aurora blue for almost a month now. From my point of view, it’s a great car on many levels. The acceleration is fun - especially at a traffic light. The range is sufficient for the typical daily use. The front seats are very comfortable - even on longer travels. The back seats are spacious enough for a short trip with the family and the trunk is okay for a long weekend as a couple. Currently the (most) perfect hatchback EV, imho.

Hi Hans. I'm thinking of ordering one of these. Sounds like they are reasonable fun and look great. What would you say are the negatives of the Born are? And can you fit a roof rack to it?
@hpchristen
@hpchristen 2 жыл бұрын
@@gwill478 I‘m not aware that a roof rack is available (possibly aftermarket; but have never looked into it). Negatives of the Born? I‘d say: the lane assist should be easier to deactivate (as it has a tendency to malfunction), the paint (blue) is rather sensitive to bitd droppings, the software needs update (waiting for 3.0) especially since the Cupra app has currently very few functions. But it‘s fun to drive, looks great, great seats, enough luggage space… I would buy it again.

I'm thinking about getting a Born V1, from your experience did you ever feel like the car needed the upgraded suspension optional extra or did it feel okay, especially over bumps and pot holes?
@hpchristen
@hpchristen 11 ай бұрын
@@taylorthrall7321 Depends on what you expect. The Born is rather stiff over bumps and potholes. I‘d say stiffer than the Audi A1 I also drive. So, if you look for comfort, you might want to consider that upgrade (which I have not tested/experienced).

The car does look good in this colour and trim. I can imagine that I would want the bigger battery version but I am not convinced about the 20” wheels. Personally I think 18” or 19” with a larger sidewall height would be better at dealing with the bad road surfaces and potholes I get on my local rural roads as they would possibly destroy the wheels on this test car, but these things are all individual personal choices. I guess you can specify the wheels you want? Looking forward to seeing more reviews of new EVs about to come out especially the Subaru Solterra so I am hoping that you will be reviewing that soon?

Nice car! It's worth picking up on what has become a sort of "standard" terminology when describing EV charger speeds. There's a tendency to speak about "fast" charging for everything even though that covers a huge span. It's partly arisen because of the increase in the availability of speedy chargers compared to a few years ago ... so here we go (ZapMap and others follow this): AC charging at less than 7kW is SLOW ... 7kW to 22kW is FAST (occasionally more) DC charging from 50kW is RAPID and 100kW+ is ULTRA RAPID. We now see that even a home charging point at 7kW is FAST so insufficient distinction if talking about Gridserve chargers being FAST when they are clearly an order of magnitude speedier ... they're RAPID and ULTRA RAPID!

(2) Sat Nav - Infotainment system, slow to respond and awful slider controls. This needs to be addressed. (3) Seat Materials 'Rivers and Beaches - who cares. (4) Overpriced and poorly specified. (5) 20" Wheels give an awful ride (yes i've driven it) and tyre cost over 18/19 huge.

As a spanish I think Cupra is doing well offering a shocking styling (looks a totally different car to the id.3 and the setup is different) in this early stage. But sooner or later will need a step backwards in overstyling the car. The bronze and some lines won't age well in 10 years from now and a more subtle agresiveness in the design will attract grown a$$ men. I miss the old days when the RS4 B7 didn't need to shout it was a performance car and it really was. Don't get me wrong...I like it a lot (now) but I'm not sure if I love it over the years.

Not sure how Gridserve think 79p perKwh is competitive! In France the same 300kw chargers are 30p per kWh. It’s really worrying that ripoff prices are already entrenched in public charging in the UK.

Love your Channel and your Production....But EV`s don`t get my Motor running....This car does have a few nice design features, but the interior is very "Grey" and a bit bland...... I might have said this before .... Take the Badges off and most new "Family" cars are a bit Samey..... :-))

These screens bolted on to the dashboard do my head in. Why on earth can the manufacturers not integrate these screens into the dashboard. Especially with the money their charging for vehicles nowadays.

Not bad, things moving in right direction. I mean it costs 8 times the price of my 11 year old Golf Gti, looks like a riot to drive, but the COST. Even with the super high cost of petrol, I'd never recoup and electric has gone up MORE than petrol has and projected to keep rising. Just can't justify it. Needs to be sub 30k or grants to get it there.

As nice as it looks, EV’s are still not doing it for me. I really don’t understand the demonising of ice cars, what’s so good about raping the planet of its precious metals, often mined by suspicious methods. Nothing eco about ev’s.

The last car I bought cost me 5k and zero road tax with super low insurance, takes 5 adults does over the speed limit and will get me from the south of the UK to the borders of Scotland on 1 tank of fuel. Electric cars are just way to pricey to even contemplate changing...never mind I live in a city where parking and charging points are few and far between (and have recently shot up in price)

This was a fantastic. watch Ped,ive got connections with Essex and Braintree,what was very striking and had me thinking was how selfish sport can be,I done the weeding there and I'm absolutely slaughtered, what if I had used a machine with battery power harboured from say...dry canoeing or virtual jogging or cycling.We are a posing race trying to look good for everyone else,spose this goes for owning nice cars too, status....

Given the sheer power and torque of this EV platform, I always tell new owners that when considering the drive modes, 'B' is 'Best', and 'D' could be 'Dangerous'. 💚

Good evening Petrol ped hope you are well. Interesting I am not to sure on the informant system of the cupra the silver looks smart I think they could make front end storage for the cables And the air conditioning would be difficult to do when driving I just love The buttons easy to use I think . The last RWD hatch back was the 140i that sounds incredible with its 6six cylinder engine Brilliant video as always ped thanks you so much

There will never be enough working charging points. And with prices on everything rising out of control how will people be able to afford to buy them and pay to charge them. A lot of people are struggling with electric gas and food bills now.

Can you actually get one? The Mrs had the opportunity to get an ID3 as a company car. Order placed and then cancelled, VW not accepting any new orders due to the massive backlog with existing orders.

Another minivan like every single other new car. It's also insane to have 20 inch wheels. The tire costs are ridiculous. Even 18 inch tires cost a fortune.

Great comment on knowing if you can live with an EV you need the car for longer than a 'test drive' but that's all dealers really offer in the most part, some offer a couple of hours. So how do you really know if you should buy one given how most dealers only want you in the car for 20 mins.

That place is great, I'm 42 and don't think I'll be around to see places like that when they become the norm. We have such a long way to go, i now think the car technology is coming on faster than the infrastructure. Really do think demand for charging is going to way to much for what is provided
