All overdrive models came standard with a 4:11 rear gear. To operate the OD, get up to about 30 MPH (I don't remember the EXACT number...like 27 of some such) and just let off the gas. It should shift into OD on its own. This can be done in any gear. Wind up 1st and let it shift then shift the lever 2-3 or in 2nd and then shift to 3rd. (there's your 4 speed) The handle under the dash should be pushed in. Pull it out to turn off the OD. It's best to move the handle while not moving or moving slower than 27-ish MPH. The OD unit is electrically operated and many manufacturers used the same unit (with possible differences in mounting and year of manufacture). If it doesn't work, it could be a blown fuse or wiring or a fried solenoid. Guys used to seek out the OD models just for the 4:11 rear gear for their non OD cars (Take off in 2nd and only one shift at the top end of the track)...then blow them up...LOL If you really want Old School, you can flip the rear spring mounts side to side and mount them inside the frame rail for more tire clearance. NOTE: This will cause clearance issues with a stock (wagon) fuel tank. The more modern pocket "kit" is a better option though. The former had been done to my 55 Handyman (along with a narrowed fuel tank...they cut up a brand new tank to do this...amazingly, it didn't leak.) and I changed it to the latter and was able to use a repro stock fuel tank. A previous owner had cut out the inner wheel wells and the spare tire well to install a fuel cell. This car had once been a drag car. It even still has a tow loop welded to the front cross member. Enjoyed the show. Keep 'em coming.

I also had a 57 Chevy wagon back In the early 60s, had the 3 on the tree and overdrive and a 265 with a 2 barrel carb. The 4.11 rear made that car. I was 18-19 at the time. Not many cars could touch it up to the top of second (about 55 if I remember right). Loved that car.

Wagons are back in Style! I live out in Southwest Triangle and have seen more classic wagons back on the road in the last 4-5 years than I had in the last 20 combined. One of my buddies in my car club is building a 78 Buick Century wagon for his wife, upon her request in fact, her grandpa had a 79 Malibu wagon when she was a kid and on Sundays after church her grandpa would load her and her brother and cousins up in the wagon and take thing out for ice cream while her Mom, Grandma and Aunt fixed dinner.

In the summer of 1968, (I was 15 in Sept), I traded a '52 Hudson Wasp for a '57 Chev 'Businessman's Coupe' 2 door station wagon & my drag racing journey began. By 1970, it had an all metal 1 piece tilt front end, 302 SBC, (small journal 327 w/ 283 crank, 11.25:1 pistons, Z-28 cam - the sweet lumpity-lump one), Muncie 4 sp, a 4:11 posi & fenderwell headers capped w/ a flat plate, held w/ wing nuts, (you know why?), w/ the exhaust out the side of the collector. Stock gazillion mile suspension, w/ some old 90:10 front shocks from my drag racing mentor & some Monroe coil overload rear shocks that were close to 50:50 valving. The only other HP suspension was a pair of Lakewood traction bars & some TDI 'cheater slicks', (8" slicks w/ a grove 7" apart to make them street legal), TDIs were a recapped, used tire made in Portland OR. It ran in the high 13-15's & was fast enough my clutch leg had the adrenalin shakes after the 1st 50-60 runs. That was it's 1st version...

The first car I had to finance the purchase of was a wagon. 1963 Ford Falcon, 6-cylinder, automatic, with an electric rear window in the tailgate. Powder blue! I purchased it from an elderly couple in 1973. Everything was in perfect condition. Loved it! The ex took it and sold it for a hundo in '74. I was crushed. So I remarried up and have gobs of cool cars since and a much better spouse!!!

So cool. Before I went into the service at 18, (1965) I had a 55 "210", 2dr post. 3 on the tree/overdrive and 4:11 rear end. I could shift into overdrive in any gear. 55 miles per hour in 1st/over. about 60 in 2nd but about 80 mph in 2nd/over. Shift into 3rd standard and top end was about 80. 3rd/over, i don't know. my 265 v8 and later 283 with 2 barrel didn't have enough ponies to get much over 90 at about 3,500 RPM. I loved the overdrive. Over 20 MPG, What I would give to have that car today. I love your 57 and I look forward to watching it become a Gasser. Thanks.

Shift a three on the tree with open palm towards the front for 1-2, 2-3, 3-2. Palm facing back towards you for 2-1 and 1-R or R-1. It’s not made to be grabbed like a floor shift. I trashed the overdrive in my studebaker lark by trying to pull it while driving. That handle is overdrive lockout. With overdrive on and driving just lift on the gas and it will shift in. Kind of a frewheeling thing.

I'm 72 years old over my life time I've been lucky enough to own so many vehicles . Being a bit of a horder I'd still have the majority if I had a place to store them.
