The rust repair on this would be near enough impossible. Will take too much time, money and labour. Get another donor E34 and transfer everything across, but do a full nut and bolt restoration. That would be entertaining to watch. Good luck. 👍

Absolutely right decision to rebuild it. It is a genuine M5 and not an M5 wannabe, but appreciate its a massive commitment with the state of the bodywork. However, looking at the E28 M5 values it may be worth it in the long-term I guess..

Stiff throttle linkage is a common thing with these. Most likely needs a set of plugs and the valve shims checking. Glad it’s up and running buddy.

I'd say rebuild it! The channel has a massive chunk of history with all the BMWs from the bush so this would the ideal project. And yes-we do like to watch rust repair 💪 Good luck bro!

Is it worth doing a compression test? The only sensible option is to get this car back on the road. How far you want to go with the restoration is up to you. Personally, I’d go for decent but not show standard. That way it will reduce costs and you won’t be afraid to drive it. Great video.

I am still in the rebuild team 👌 They don't make them anymore, so it's worth trying to save it. If, after the disassembly phase, you find the car body to be in such bad shape that it's not feasible or worthwhile to restore, then you can plan to fit the engine into another body instead.

Have a check of the ITB boots. Probably a little rotten and could be letting in unmetered air. But yeh, something fuel/ignition related. Build it and they will come 😂

Hi Josh. I said on the comments of the last video I thought you should re-shell it. But there is merit in what you say about it being a real M5. Another channel i watch 'Yorkshire Car Restoration' every video they do is rust repair and I watch everything they do from start to finish. They are doing a very rotten Masda cosmo right now which I'd say is the rustiest car they have ever done. Maybe give them a watch for format ideas etc.

I very much agree. E34 looks the best in a sedan variant. I dont mind tourings, but e34 is a nono for me too. That being said i would love to watch this car get restored instead of swapping parts to another shell as e34 is sort of a dream car for me, but budget is what it is, it'd be really cool to see different spots that you repair on it and so on.

New thought, keep it, but dont worry about cosmetic at all. Redo the mechanicals underneath, plastic fuel tank, new fuel lines, fix the rockers/rust issues, subframe rebuilds, sls delete and fit a 535i power steering pump, and then drive it. Paint work can stay as it is, and worry about that later on.

It's almost unbelievable that a legendary vehicle like this left to rot. Restoring this is a mammoth task as every bit is rotten. The most sensible thing to do is to build an E34 M5 touring which will very desirable and pretty unique. I believe they were only available in LHD if memory serves me correctly. I'm not a fan of estate cars myself but there would be a huge following for this. I did once own an E34 525 touring! I wished it had a bit of M magic!

Might be worth checking for oil sludge seeing as it sat for years with oil in it... Can remove the cam covers for a quick check, then the oil pan aswell, the oil pickup will tell you what you need to know about the engine

Hi Josh. Perverse as it may be, I actually enjoy watching rust repairs! However, in order to repair that car anything like right, I think it would need stripping right back and putting on a rollover jig. That would at least leave your ramp free to make some money with. We'll see what you decide.

Valcas garage has a lot of affordable repair panels for the e34 including jacking point reinforcements. At least outer sills should be changed as a complete panel to avoid re-rusting from inside due to welding seam on the sill panel

Beg, Borrow or Build a decent rotisserie and strip it and blast shell using crushed Garnet and then if the rotisserie is on castors, you can push the shell to the side to concentrate on paid work and play with (repair it) when you get the time. If I didn't have too many projects already, i would be over with what you paid for it in Euro and make the decision for you. Kind regards Geoff Ireland. Ps loved the m5 dough nuts at the end. My mates got barred from many a local pub from drifting a 535i Sport or a Twin Cam Corrolla around the pub carpark many moons ago.
