First Drive: Ken Block Drives the ALL NEW Extreme E Electric Racecar in Last Stage of Dakar Rally

This is my first drive in an all-electric racecar... ever. And it's in the Dakar Rally, of all places!! How rad is that? I had the opportunity to race the final stage of Dakar in the all new Extreme E ODYSSEY 21 racecar, and it was an absolute blast. And yes, I may have ripped a donut or two in it, too. The wildest feeling was how instantly the electric torque came on (all 750lb/ft) and how fun it was to drive because of that.

That’s EXACTLY what I had originally thought. Then I realized that it makes an identical sound that the power wheels made from when I was growing up. It makes the EXACT same sound. I’m sure that it might be louder and different in person. But through this video and possible distortion, sounds identical. I even said. If I had to hear them both, without watching anything or “putting a visual aspect to the sound”. That I would 99.9% not be able to tell them apart

Car would need to follow the actual rules first. This car is so far above what is allowed in the rally that'd it'd have to be completely rebuilt to even compete. It's like saying "Well how well would an Olympian do in a high school track meet?" The "cars" it was competing against had probably half the suspension travel, 2/3rds the tire size, etc., and nearly half the power.

He's essentially figuring out the same thing I figured out when I started driving electric forklifts back in the day. Once you've driven a good electric forklift, every other kind of forklift seems lesser. "Instant power" doesn't quite cover it, and a 10 000 lb Raymond Dock-Stocker (stand-up electric) can accelerate and stop faster than a standard lift of the same weight.

I could keep one food on the gas and one on the brake the entire time. Engines will be in motorsport basically forever. Racing is already hard to watch for most people , take the sound away and viewers drop which means not worth it for sponsors and then it all circles the drain from there. At least for Pro racing. So... you'll see self-driving electric commuters and utility vehicles and a couple electric racing series and electric speed records across the board for sure , but the main events will be multi-class, open engine, analog , zero aids , stick shift , PTWR governed , bad ass raw road course racing and drifting of course.

@ 8:40 is crazy. It sounds EXACTLY like a power wheels. As soon as I heard it, it reminded me of something from my child hood. At first I thought “maybe an RC car”? Then I realized it. It sounded identical (especially when he takes off from a dead stop). It sounds exactly like when I would take off in the little power wheels Barbie Jeep that my cousin had. It does seem, and I’m sure that it would be a lot louder and more defined when you hear it in person vs through a KZbin video. I’m just amazed at how identical the sounds are. I’m almost positive that if played with no context, or even being able to see the automobile (just hearing). I’m 99.9% sure that I would not be able to notice the differences between the two and their “sounds”.

ya know, i have ALWAYS wondered why they have rc cars that are very very simple setups that can do 100+mph in 3 seconds.. my Arrma Typhon 6S V4 can do 70mph completely stock. 2200kv motor.. why have they never scaled that up and made a real car with the equivalent power of an rc car? like make a giant brushless motor (or 4), make a giant battery bank.. and go break records.. its obviously slightly more complicated than that, but ive always wondered why they havent.. well now they apparently did. lol.. a giant full electric car with insane torque.. i freakin love it!

Several things don't scale up properly. E.g. material strength, energy density of the motors, getting rid of waste heat, etc. You might want to Google "Reynolds Number", that's another thing that comes into play - stuff simply doesn't act the same at different scales.

@@blkicemike4857 agreed. thats why electric cars have been suppressed for all this time. electric cars were invented a lOOOONNNGGGG time ago.. same with kodak suppressing digital cameras, etc.. theres a lot of examples of multi trillion dollar companies suppressing technology that wouldve negatively effected their company.. even if that suppression meant it would hold back mankind. we live in an extremely corrupt world.
