there also was some 3rd party analogue arcade stick for the saturn where you could switch which side the stick was (for Leftys I assume) but if you happened to have a spare joystick side you could atach it to the other side and have dual analogue input.. apparently panzer dragoon supports that mode I've never seen one for sale though

Oh, PS1 strafing... Syphon Filter used shoulder buttons for that. Tomb Raider had sidestep "mode", like original DOOM on PC except much slower. Metal Gear just opted for top-down camera with 4-way run like in 2D games, and in vast majority of games, sidestepping was an overnight, with only last few games like Alien having dual analog controls of shooters today.

You could strafe in the old PC shooters Doom, Duke 3D ect but you held down a button usually shift whilst moving left or right, so strafe circling was impossible without actually setting buttons to left strafe and right strafe
@Sirynx779 жыл бұрын
***** Yes it is, you can set your own button layout and yes you can strafe in the game. With or without the PlayStation Analog Joystick. In the game is called "Slide," I did the same as Ryan Stanyan mentioned, I would map the hat switch on the PlayStation Analog Joystick to "Slide" the ship up, down, left and right. The same was true on the PSOne sequel "Descent Maximum" which is a version of the PC original "Descent 2" with some extra levels. Oh and the remix soundtrack was actually originally featured in the Macintosh version of the game.

It was possible to strafe with the hat switch. In fact, you can strafe while moving in any axis simultaneously! this was one of my all time favorite controllers and I absolutely loved Descent.

When it's plugged in, there is specific, niche support for it as well as, occasionaly, a matching on-screen visual of the Analog joystick in the controls mapping / calibrations menu... I wanna say in Ace Combats 2 and 3, Bogey: Dead 6, the Colony Wars series except Red Sun, and, possibly, Gunship and Independence Day. Works great on a few PS2 games that are already listed on Wikipedia but a missed mention for which I think it's almost required because the DS2 thumb sticks can throw you into the cliff faces, for example, is the RPG aerial combat game Rebel Raiders: Operation Nighthawk. The analog joysticks allow you to weave through the canyons with ease albeit not via a true, HOTAS-style config. but both sticks do get used.

I like this video but...the N64 had an analog control stick, not a digital stick, thats why you can control whether Mario walks or runs by how far you tilt the stick in Super Mario 64 for example.
@SirManguydude9 жыл бұрын
john tyler False. The standard, first party N64 controller used Optical Encoding disks to determine the position of the stick, thus making it a digital stick. Many third party controllers use potentiometers, which were much cheaper, which were analog. Optical encoding disks is why your controller will retain any position that the thumbstick is in when you power on the console/plug in the controller. This is because the N64 will determine that position as "0" and thus when the joystick goes to center, it will be detected as out of center by the games.
@johntyler35449 жыл бұрын
SirManguydude The optical disks sounds like a bad idea, why not just have the stick actually be analog?
@SirManguydude9 жыл бұрын
john tyler Better precision, way more accurate. Significantly quieter, easier to fix, harder to break. Various reasons, which is why all thumbsticks are digital nowadays.

@JL0ndon7 жыл бұрын
The thing about mechwarrior if you look back to the early 90s on a program from the U.K. Called bad influence you will see Mechwarrior using a T1 line and giant "pods" strewn about a room. The controller was even more advance than the one you showed for the Xbox. Each pod had walls of buttons and lights. You have to check it out. The only thing is you and your team had to go to a VR center. But at the time there were several of these arcades. During the experience you could even go to an old rotary phone from the 1900s set up with a small LCD and camera to have video phone calls with your opponents from of the other centers. I kinda wish these places existed like they did back in 1994. My dad used to play this when I was a kid and he was a programmer so you can imagine he and all his programmer friends (mullets, thick glasses and polo shirts included) would go out to Glendale to play. There were a lot of younger players too, who would spend all week at school making strategys with their friends at recess. Idk it looked like fun getting in one of those pods and going to kick some mech suit butt!

neat classic controller. The only thing it really could have benefited from would have been the ability to "twist" left and right on at least the Right hand stick. That was a later feature added to many PC Joysticks of the day and would have given you yoru strafe functionality.
@KahlessTheUnforgettable10 ай бұрын
No sir. The strafe mode would have to have been intentionally programmed into the game for it to be utilized. It doesn’t matter what input features are available on any given input device.

for descent, you can map the left x axis for the strafing
@DjVortex-w9 жыл бұрын
I have been wondering why strafing is such a relatively "modern" invention on console games, when it has been since _forever_ in PC games. Already Wolfenstein 3D (1992) had strafing as a basic and essential form of control (and it probably wasn't even the first to do so). Naturally Doom (1993) used the same control scheme, and it's one of the most influential games ever made, and solidified many of the staples of first-person shooters. Yet when you look at consoles, you can find games from as late as 2005 (for consoles like the PlayStation 2) that use "tank" controls instead of the regular strafing controls. "Tank" controls are just horrible and make the game almost unplayable. It makes no sense.
@rerez9 жыл бұрын
It's true, strafing was around for a while. It just didn't become well utilized until more modern games started using it. It was very common to see players of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom play the game without strafing at all. Specifically with Wolfenstein 3D, it wasn't until the SNES port that we finally saw dedicated strafe left and right buttons. The PC version required you to hold a button down, altering the turn left and turn right commands. It seems alien now, but the idea of a button that just did nothing but strafe in a specific direction was not so common back then.
@robknapp86479 жыл бұрын
I also remember playing both Wolfenstein 3D and The Doom series on my old IBM 486 PC and being able to strafe in both games. This was years before the PlayStation was released.

I've never heard a computer voice comparing to it in any other game. Now one thing that you REALLY should look at? 8:19: There is a car that actually has a Joystick to steer with instead of a steering wheel, it's called the Saab Prometheus. There are also others, but the Prometheus actually has _No_ Steering wheel at all. So you have to used the digital joystick to steer the car. It was part of a European program to make cars safer and cleaner, and the engineers figured that removing the steering wheel would make the car safer in crashes, because the driver wouldn't bang their head on the wheel. But it failed, because driving with the stick was awful. The smallest turn would make the wheel turn a long way, which is hard to get used to. And the stick isn't as comfy as a wheel, because there is nothing to rest your arm on, so for longer journeys it would be very uncomfortable to drive.

this is why analog sticks work so much better. Trying to be precise with huge sticks like these is nearly impossible. To me the comment about arcade layout in center is funny. These days, thanks to the Street fighter IV sticks the modern standard is Square, Triangle, R1, L1, 2nd row X O, R2, L2 - so the buttons matched Street Fighter IV by default, but there is a huge logical gap, one that you have to often fight with on modern arcade sticks, even in games made for them as menus want you to use L1 and R1 for navigating sub menus, while they are very weirdly mirrored on sticks. I personally wired my 2nd stick so it matches this stick's layout, so L buttons come first. It was mostly so the small stick has more space between your main buttons and the stick but it also made playing many less conventional games with the stick - Like Mario Kart 8. How Mad Catz and Street Fighter IV shaped up the modern standard where left is right and right is left is still funny, even if you understand why.
