I'm 40 years old and remember growing up in Plano TX with my KX 80. Back then our subdivision was at the edge of urban sprawl and behind us was nothing but vast expanses of open land. This land was probably owned by someone or perhaps the city but it was fully accessible for public use. All of us kids in the area had mx bikes and there was no such thing as trailering your bike anywhere. You started your bike in your garage and rode from there to meet your friends at any one of seemingly endless natural terrain motocross tracks back there. Those were the days! They're long gone now though and I think electric bikes are probably the only hope of regaining some riding spots.

+ducatiist i love my elec-bike for exactly that reason. I have a 'street legal' mode - 200w (lol, stupidly slow) and my 'offroad' mode - 10kw. plenty of power given its only 45kg. and no one notices you either :P

Does anyone know where we can listen to the bikes' whine without a music soundtrack? Part of the novelty of this new form of racing is the electric sounds they make, and the other missed sounds that normally go unnoticed due to combustion. Too bad we're forced to listen to music instead...missed opportunity on the upload. :(

As much as i like the sound of a motor under me, this is genus. There wouldn't be any of that green sticker crap, there could be tracks virtually anywhere due to barley no noise, and when the batteries get better they could be used for gncc because i'm assuming that they would be reallly light so easy handling.

Electric MX bikes would slam the "they're too noisy" door argument used to shut down tracks across the country. Ya, they might not sound as wicked, but given development time, they'll be just as fast as the gassers.

I would still ride the bejesus out of my 450, But the chance to go to my neighborhood electric track and tear it up for the evening? Thats huge! the Tech is a LONG way off from even coming close to compete with MotoX. This is an entirely different sport, like Mtn Biking or BMX. Im super interested. I ope the tech drops in price so I can get involved without having to mortgage the house to get one.

+Hooves you should look closer mate... i know guys with mx level power on _pushbikes_, and even 1 or 2 with super bike power on pushbikes (ie over 100hp), on things that weigh about 50-80kg... the one thing lacking with electrics is range, and that's increasing pretty rapidly (+20% or so in the last year). lighter, more power, way less maintenance, ride where you want cause no one can hear you... there's lots of advantages with the only real disadvantage being range...

These bikes look pretty cool and an electric bike is a neat concept but I have a feeling no one's going to buy them for racing the first time someone posts a video of someone going for a triple on one of these bikes and the battery dies 3/4 of the way up the face of the takeoff. That's gunna be spectacular.

Say what you want, I have rode gas all my younger teen years while living when I lived at my Dad's in the country, Now that I live back in the city and My son has just turned 12 I want him to enjoy the same experience I had. Can't do that with a gas bike. The neighbors would run us off lol. Got him a Razor MX650 and he loves it, Looking at a Mitchell Zero for myself just waiting on the cost to come down.

have a solar panel array on your race trailer and keep charging it up through the day hell yeah. come back eat some lunch and give it a charge, charge overnight when camping after your battery bank on your trailer is fully charged. infinite riding. they need to come out with an electronic exhaust that mimics a real one, when you give it more throttle it should get louder not whine, and mimic gear changes haha. maybe produced with a weatherproof speaker or something

I had a EPA guy tell me that I could have a tractor with a straight pipe making noise all day and no problem. But as soon as I started to use that tractor for recreation that was against the law. I should point out that I had a 3 acre mx track in my backyard and a prick neighbor !

Been there done that, no problem. Way more torque control than a gas bike. Plenty of power. You can even stop halfway up and get moving again without all that clutch and noise drama.

Yeah supposedly more green.. no you have to use more of the environment to make the bikes than it takes to make a petrol bike.. and the excitement that the noise before the gates drop from the normal bikes is part of what motorcross and not only that the smell of spent petrol from motorcross is what makes motocross, motocross..

jarett baker They are real engines. They are very powerful and efficient. They just aren't obnoxiously loud. A quiet dirtbike is a good thing because people won't get pissed off. I don't understand the hate the only difference is it makes no noise. They also require basically no engine maintenance. Range is the only downside but that will improve with time.

leonvandermaas What powerband? I have a 175 KTM (Penton) and a 250 KTM. Both have wider powerbands than most Japanese MX bikes, but NOTHING can touch the "bandwidth"...powerband, of an electric motor. Instant torque!
