The picture on the album is from Camarillo State Mental Hospital. It is now closed. I was there once for an inlaw who was admitted. Creepy, creepy place. Dim, dark, smelled of urine. To me this is about people admitted there battling their own demons. You can check out any time you like but you can never leave ....

Actually, Don Felder came up with all of the music for this song. The song you're thinking of where Joe Walsh would warm up playing the lick was "Life in the Fast Lane". Glen Frey heard Joe warming up and told him, "that's a song!" The lyrics came from Frey who was riding shotgun with his buddy in a corvette and the guy was going like 130mph. Glen is like, "whoa dude!" His buddy is like, "Life in the Fast Lane, man!"

@@RobGamesOn Christina is correct. If you go back and watch the history of the eagles - Felder credits Walsh for creating the ditty. Felder says he couldn’t come up with an ending and Walsh was like “what if we did it like this?”…and the rest was history.

Don Henley, Phil Collins, Karen Carpenter, Levon Helm are legendary drummers who can really sing. It was different back then... No autotune or computer generated corrections. You had to actually be a musician not just an entertainer. I'm so blessed to have experienced all of it live. Although, full disclosure, there was a lot of LSD involved in every one of my Eagles concerts back in the day so the memories are a bit fuzzy. 🥴 Thank you, Rad, for allowing me to see it through your eyes. I love Joe Walsh on guitar and always have (the guy with the bandana on his head). He is one of the top rated guitarists of rock and roll. I see it as metaphorical. It's about the Ca. Vibe. Mostly, I've always thought, about the decadent L.A. scene. The drugs, the parties, the "beautiful" people-actors musicians, writers, etc...how many people have crashed and burned, how you can never get out of that scene and be who you were before.

Although the band has never wanted to explain their lyrics, they say they want the audience to find their own interpretation, it helps to analyze them through the lens of time - 1976. The hard drug culture - cocaine, heroin, LSD had almost an entire generation struggling with addiction. The Eagles’ guitarist, Joe Walsh, famously battled “the beast”. Have a good listen to the lyrics again. This is not a hotel you want to visit: “...you can check out any time you want (“checking out” is a euphemism for dying), but you can never leave (once you’re addicted you’re always addicted). It’s safe to say that if you look at 70s and 80s music from a drug culture perspective, you’ll get to the truth of the song 80% of the time. I saw the Eagles in concert a couple of years ago, they still sound great, their live performances and studio albums are pretty much identical quality-wise. Glenn Frey’s passing in 2016 has left a gap that they’ve filled with Glenn’s son and the addition of the legendary Vince Gill to the band. I wept when they played this song, I was in grade 12 when it was first released. It’s the stuff of musical legacy.

Not a real hotel. A metaphorical one: California with all of its excesses. GREAT REACTION. There was no actual Hotel California It is a metaphor. Here is the history of the song. I am older, I am 72 years old. I lived through this. This was my era and my generation. The cry of our ERA, was "SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL" The reference to 1969 was WOODSTOCK. See, the hippie and yippie movement started in California. It was the time of "FREE LOVE and WEED and DRUGS.." Hotel California offered and provided EVERYTHING you wanted or needed. "We are all just prisoners here of our own device." Mirrors over the beds, sex. Alcohol, "The FEAST on the bed, was cut with a knife" the BEAST was DRUGS. (FEED YOUR ADDICTION, (THE DRUG OF THAT DAY WAS HEROIN) Stay as long as you want or leave anytime, (but you NEVER leave your ADDICTION behind). In 1977 they sang about these things in code or EXAMPLE, AND METAPHORS, for words that you could not record in 1977, or they would have been CENSORED and never played on any radio station. In an interview in 2007 the Eagles admitted they themselves were drowning in these temptations, just as ALL of California was. GO BACK AND LISTEN AGAIN TO THE SONG, Listen for the lyrics of, this can be heaven or hell. You will see that I am correct.

Hotel California was released in 1976 on the album of the same name. It was the first album to feature current member Joe Walsh and the last album to feature original bass player Randy Meisner. The song is NOT about an ACTUAL hotel! According to drumming lead vocalist Don Henley, it’s about the excess of American culture. He admitted in a later interview, the song is about the American Dream and it’s dark underside. Meaning that the American Dream can sometimes turn into the American nightmare and how life can go from innocence to experience.

The "Hotel" seems like an oasis, and initially its great, nice cars, pretty girls, wine, mirrors on the ceilings, pink Champaign on ice, and "some dance to remember, some dance to forget" some take drugs to remember and some to forget. but then once you are addicted you cant ever get enough, you cant ever satisfy the craving "in their masters chamber's, they gather for the feast, they stab it with their steely knives but they just cant kill the beast", and once your addicted you are always addicted, even if you manage to quit, you will always have that addiction inside you "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"

Eagles were one of the biggest bands of the 1970s. Probably none bigger than The Eagles in the 70s other than Led Zeppelin. The Eagles also had multiple lead singers and they had successful solo careers too. You should find and react to Phil Collins live version of In the Air Tonight. There is a great HD live version with over 100M views.

The song is about: "A Journey from Innocents to Experience" according to the song writer Don Henley. (See History of the Eagles)

According to the two authors of the song, it has no specific meaning. Any meaning inferred by the listener is something from the listener's own imagination. There is no actual Hotel California - the "hotel" could be a bad drug experience. It could be an insane asylum. It's a collection of meaningless nothing and offered to the listener as the same. It's all up to personal interpretation. The song was such a successful mix of imaginary hodgepodge (it's still played every 11 minutes on average), that they made the mistake of trying to top it with an even better song - and this was one of the reasons they broke up.

Once upon a time...I went to Milpitas California for a class. I got there, checked into the hotel, called my wife and said "Grab a plane, come on down and we'll spend the weekend in San Francisco. I'm staying at the Hotel California." Because that's what the place looked like. Oh yeah, she got there, and they had a fire in the kitchen. We got to spend about an hour standing around in the parking lot. But there was an upside...the hotel opened up the bar for free drinks and pizza! Great trip.

Not an actual hotel it's metaphoric! All the band members sing and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999!

Don Henley is but one of the lead singers. Guitarist Glenn Frey was the other lead vocalist. As for drummers who are also lead vocalist, Don Henley isn't the only one. Another well-known drummer vocalist is Phil Collins, both with Genesis as well as on his solo career.

No no no you do not want to go there.I am there now and i cant leave, i have tried but failed.Listen to the lyrics very carefully Bro, this song is about addiction hence you can check out any time you like but you can never leave. This song is very dark but also the greatest song ever. This is my life story.Addiction is horrible but also a way of life, my life.

This song is so much deeper than some people understand. The “Hotel” is an example of life. The great thing about most Rock lyrics often means you get your own meaning from the song.

I prefer the meaning of the Hotel as an "after-life" experience, and not the drug culture. As you may learn, the Hotel you can check in, but you can never leave.

To me, Hotel California is about a place of addiction, where all your desires and fantasies are fulfilled but the catch is that this fantasy land then becomes your prison. Hotel California turns into a place of no escape to those who went there to serve their own secret desires. Scary but true! Brilliant song writing!

That really didn't get through to you at all LOL. it's all about drug addiction and how you can't get away from it, not an actual hotel anyone wants to visit. "You can check out anytime, but you can never leave"
