In this video I react to Miasma by Ghost (aka Ghost BC in USA), a completely new band to me, and I'm quite delighted by what I here.

Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, Canadian classic prog rock guitar teacher on KZbin. I grew up on classic 70s prog but abandoned it in the late 80s. Prog seemed dead and my orig. prog band was told by labels we were too prog. So i went onto grunge, pop, then folk, then strictly acoustic solo guitar etc...staying loyal to my staples like Yes and Rush, BUT 2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery that SO much great prog went on that I'd totally missed out on. So join me as I catch up on 30 years of prog!

Ghost are *_definetly_* a band worth checking out! Awesome musicianship, very retro-rock sound, with a tongue-in-cheeck satanic twist. Instead of being satanically _evil_ , they're going for satanically _seductive._ All in good fun, of course.

They succeeded, in the time I’ve known the band I went from Christian, to agnostic, to somewhat satanist, although I don’t fully subscribe to it because I do believe there is a god of sorts. And of course I still wanna bang Papa.

Saw them open for Opeth and Mastodon. They were alright but (imo) they are over-hyped. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them as an opener again, but I doubt I'd pay to see them as a headliner.

sopwithsnoopy Fair enough. But I’d point out that rarely is the mix for support acts as good as the headliner. I saw Karnivool as a support act for Skindred years ago, and didn’t think much of them. But when I saw them again as headliner following the release of Asymmetry, their sound was massive. A good friend of mine saw Ghost support Metallica, and they were a big Ghost fan, but didn’t think too much of that performance. But they came saw Ghost again with me at the Royal Albert Hall and fell in love with them all over again. I’d say, give them a go as a headliner once if you can.

To answer your question - they are not an instrumental band...they are primarily a vocal band...a subversive, quasi-satanic, sacrilegious, satirical act, the brainchild of one guy. Each album has a different sound. They have a lot of backstory that I won't go into here, but I'm a HUGE fan. Definitely check out "Genesis" from their first album for another instrumental. You may find some of the lyrical content to be overtly anti-religious, so be forewarned. I've seen them 4 times...and "Miasma" is a fantastic live track as well. Enjoy!
@Spasstiful
@Spasstiful 4 жыл бұрын
It would be a Paradoxon to be anti religious but quasi satanic. They use that as a form of "critique" I guess. Could be wrong. In any case, if they believed in some satanic forms of beliefsystem, it would make them religious.
@MattKrogmeier
@MattKrogmeier 4 жыл бұрын
@@Spasstiful I should clarify - what I mean by "anti-religious" is that the band is largely anti-organized religion. The shtick is a critique more than it is an actual "satan worshiping" band. That's how I interpret it, anyway.
@Spasstiful
@Spasstiful 4 жыл бұрын
@@MattKrogmeier yes, that's how I understand it too. But I am not too familiar with the band, so :) In skandinavia religion isn't a huge thing. Goes hand in hand with tolerance, who would of thought? :P
@2yoyoyo1Unplugged

@@Spasstiful well, not really paradoxical. Actual “Satanism” is more a movement mocking religious doctrine and encouraging worship of the self than an actual religion in and of itself.

@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged Hmm, I didn't think of it as a form of critique as far as I came in contact with ocultism/satanism. But may be true, I believe you on that since you probably have more experience of the "scene". Regardless of it being an counterfy ideology simply meant to upset religion or it being taken as a serious belief, it does it in both cases.

While this is a great song on it's own, it leads directly into "Danse Macabre", which you should do next. And this is one of their only instrumental tracks. Strange choice considering Tobias (in his various satanic cardinal forms and names) is the lead singer and only full member of the group. He employs musicians to tour and session musicians for the studio. But this is really his band. Also, they were only temporarily Ghost BC in the US, that legal battle was finally settled and you can just call them Ghost everywhere now.

Fun fact about Ghost. All of the musicians wear full costumes and are unidentified except as Nameless Ghouls (they have alchemy symbols to differentiate). Dave Grohl did a guest stint on drums as a Nameless Ghoul so who knows who else has done it or will do it in the future.

It's actually pretty well known among fans. Grohl produced their "If You Have Ghost" EP, and almost certainly played drums on the studio recording of their Abba cover "I'm A Marionette." If you want to know a list of former performing band members, do a search for "Ghost Lawsuit" and you'll find out a bunch.

Dean Wolfe well...sort of. To me, on a concept album, each song is part of an entire story arc. With Ghost, only some of the songs on each album tell a story. From the Ghost Wiki: “The theme of Opus Eponymous ties in with the band's second album, Infestissumam: "Everything on the first record was about a coming darkness, an impending doom. Whereas the new record is about something present, and literally, the new record deals with the presence of the Anti-Christ, the Devil." The first album ended with "Genesis", the birth of the Antichrist, and Infestissumam continues from the Antichrist's birth onward.”
