Long-unused small regional airport terminals are like beautiful time capsules. Typically empty and with all the decorations and fixing from the time it was built. There's a weird sensation walking through one. EDIT: As somebody who lives in Hawaii and sees Mokulele Cessnas, it's funny to imagine their logo in Indiana of all places (they're owned by Southern Airways Express)

Something to be aware of is that it's a Part 135 carrier. A lot of companies, including my own, will not allow you to fly 135 without prior approval from the safety and insurance people due to liability and charter crashes. I feel that's going to cause an issue with all the business travelers who would pay for such a flight.

I remember that terminal. The last time I was there, was when Bob Hoover put on an airshow with his Shrike Commander. That was in 1971 at the Alpha Eta Rho conference and Airshow. I flew a C-150 from HUF to LAF. I'm 73 and it's a small world 🙂

Brings back memories. I loved watching Air Wisconsin's Twin Otter ops of out LAF back in the early '70s. Purdue's flying club, Purdue Pilots, was operating out of Aretz Airport north of town back then. Sadly that little airfield is long gone.

I used to work at the airport a long time ago. Watching this video brought back bittersweet memories for me. I loved working at the airport and being so near to the aircraft. Purdue had two Beechcraft King Airs and one Private jet that was used for flight training and ferrying the Purdue President to various events around the Midwest.

This is a fantastic video from someone local who has seen what the airport needs and finally as a result of growth in Lafayette, has direct air services again. I loved your commentary and the reasons why this is such a beneficial service to the airport. With the new terminal coming soon, it would be brilliant to see more direct services and maybe even some other LCC flights. Well put together, and thankyou for sharing.

According to the wikipedia article on Purdue Airlines, Purdue itself once briefly offered scheduled airline service from Purdue Airport to Chicago, way back in 1950.

Nice video, I'm surprised they didn't do any fanfare for this first flight given its a huge day for the airport and the community. I was on SAE's inaugural flight out of Muskegon (made a video about it) and it was the same thing... no fanfare. I thought about going on this inaugural but it was hard to get to LAF before the flights started :)
@Danielator366 ай бұрын
Purdue did host a private event the day before, but I was still surprised that there wasn't anything for the first actual flight. It was particularly odd given that Southern charged double the usual fare to be on that first flight. Nonetheless, I'm happy that I got to be on it!

Great video. Do you get off airside in ORD? Wondering if you have a connecting flight do you need to redo TSA at ORD? Also, how's TSA at LAF? They're only getting like a dozen or so passengers everyday I guess.
@Danielator36Ай бұрын
Yes, you do! Southern flies in and out of gate F4, so you end up airside right between the United and American terminals. No need to go through TSA again- and assuming you buy all your flights in one ticket, checked bags automatically transfer to the partner airline. TSA at LAF usually takes ~5 minutes max. They open the checkpoint just before the flight, and you board right after TSA. Despite the small size, they do also offer pre-check.

Seems a lot of money to build a new terminal for a small connection airline that only transports a couple dozen paxs a day. The original terminal seems fine for that role. If A321s or 737s had scheduled service, that would be a different story.
@Danielator366 ай бұрын
I don't think the current terminal building has many years left anyway- my understanding is that the new terminal is being built largely to handle planes as big as A321s or 737s for other airlines, Purdue sports charters, etc.

The growth of Purdue and the industries in LAF - Caterpillar, Subaru, Saab and others might increase the traffic.

Wait. The terminal is unused. There is NO capacity problem. Why are they spending my tax dollars on a new terminal? I have zero doubt that a new terminal is far more expensive than refurbishing and updating the UNUSED terminal.

It’s unable to provide the support required for regional jet usage. Mainly having compliance with federal regulations concerning security for those types of flights. They can easily process 9 people, but when you start needing to process 50+ they don’t have the space required under federal regulations
@stemerri60206 ай бұрын
In a “word”, ‘cause TSA. The “Old” terminal is a hangar that was converted to an airline terminal, Foundation offices, and other space in the 70’s. Believe it or not, there was once FOUR different airlines serving Purdue/Lafayette. I have personally flown out of LAF numerous times on Mesaba/NW, American Eagle/Simmons, Air Wisconsin, Britt, and United/ Great Lakes. After Regions/TW Express left, the University converted even more space, the old security room is now the “Aviation Library”, I am told. The “Region” has grown substantially since then, with the 231 improvements it can now be easier and quicker to fly out of LAF than Indy, if your trip requires a connection. Not even counting parking cost.

@Danielator366 ай бұрын
The current "terminal" is actually just built into an aging hangar which has a bunch of issues and is nearing the end of its useful lifespan. My understanding is that the new (fairly small) terminal is being built to comply with modern TSA requirements while also being able to handle the larger planes used by Purdue sports charters, leisure airlines, etc.
