Mike I joined you on your first flight. Really enjoy and looking forward to following the rest. God Bless

I’ve been following your adventures. I have a Cruzer with Viking engine also. I’ve not updated the gearbox yet. Wondering if you know what is being changed on the gearbox and what was the issue with the old one. I too had issues with gps and adsb antennas on the glare shield. Moving them overhead, right under and near back of clear roof panel worked much better. My engine speeds seem quite a bit different than yours. I cruise mid 90’s at about 3900 rpm. I usually run it around 3700. Is your left turn issue different with weight in the passenger seat?

Hi there, thanks for sharing your data! My original gearbox would touch 200 deg. F. This temp reached beyond what Viking had as their "normal range" of 180. Later, I read on their website that the temps could go as high as 200 deg. without issues. I hated to run the temps this high. I heard about their new gearbox, which has roller bearings, and could handle temps up to 250 deg. The roller bearings also provided another benefit that I do not remember, maybe an alignment thing? My IAS is about 5 mph slow. My preliminary numbers are around 96 mph (calibrated) at 4600 RPM. Yours is definitely running faster. I am curious, do you also have the STOL tires on your plane? I know they will take away some speed from my plane. I also have the big spacer on my nose gear that has to be pretty draggy :). I am also trying to find the perfect pitch, but not actively messing with that right now. I am getting just shy of 5100 rpm on my T/O roll. I am pitched at 20.75 deg. on my Whirlwind prop. Would love to know more of your stats regarding pitch and T/O roll RPM. I am in Florida, so pretty much at sea level, other than the crazy amount of heat and humidity.

@@mhilderbrand7693 I’ve got a 70” three blade prop (Aeroprop, Ukraine) set to 22 degrees (75% radius point). I could get better take off & climb with flatter pitch, but like engine running bit slower at cruise. I get 4000 rpm on takeoff roll and 4200 on 70 mph climb out. My plane has stock wheels with pants. Nose wheel strut tube was extended 3” for prop clearance. I have not seen much of an issue with gear temp. Gear temps look to be about 160, although my gauge needs calibration. A link if you would like to see it in action: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXiceoqHmbainJY. Takeoff roll you see was hot summer day at DA 2700 -2900 ft on grass. I am not very aggressive with pitch or throttle on take off. Landing was power off with 1 sec or less on flaps. I’ve had my gearbox apart for inspection. If you are interested in photos of the internals, I can send a friend request on the zenith forum.

@@geezerguy47 I watched your video. Nice plane! I thought I might be running a little too much pitch, but after hearing your numbers, I guess I could go either way. I like your idea of running it at a slower RPM. I will probably just leave mine where it is for the time being. I kind of wonder if my GB temps will go down some the more I run it? Time will tell. Again, thank you so much for sharing your info!

Any chance you’ve compared GPS speeds with your cell?
@mhilderbrand769310 ай бұрын
No, haven’t tried the cell phone comparisons. I do have two independent sources of GPS now, the sport EFIS and the BOM. They are pretty much right on.

Good job!! How have your landings been? I'm still working on getting that dialed in.
@mhilderbrand7693 Жыл бұрын
I have had a couple (literally 2) really nice squeakers. Most of my landings feel a little firm. I still come in fast and flat over the numbers. I definitely still need to get the landings dialed in. I still haven’t added any weight to the back yet. I know some say that helps with the flare during landing, but I am reluctant to do that at this point.

@@mhilderbrand7693 shame... I have seen this suggestion ruin a nice plane . Can't believe Zenith even suggests it 🤬

@@Texxas750Cruzer Yeah, you don’t want to over do it. I did end up taking a lot of mine back out. Which can’t be good for the aluminum.
