Mechwarrior 5 Clans is going to release in 2024! At GDC, PGI showed a new trailer as well as 10 minutes of in-game footage depicting a Clan star investigating mysterious inert Inner Sphere dropships. We'll talk about the trailer, gameplay scenes, and press coverage so far, as well as feedback and areas of improvement from what I've seen so far. Enjoy!

MechWarrior 5: Clans is an upcoming BattleTech Mecha game under development by Piranha Games and due for release in 2024 on Windows and Consoles. It is the first Clan single player MechWarrior game since 1995.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is set in 3015 during the final decade of the Third Succession War, casting the player as a rookie mercenary MechWarrior rising from the ashes of a demolished mercenary unit. They are able to accept contracts from the various factions available in this time period. The campaign is said to go all the way up to 3049, just before the Clan Invasion."

The clanners speak correctly too, not just some items like "aff" and "neg" but they do not seem to use contractions. very cool!

Longer words and no contractions are easier to understand on the radio and minimize any possible confusion. That's why contractions are frowned on in ATC and military radios, and proper radio chatter is quite ritualistic. It's called brevity, and it's something the majority of sci-fi militaries including BattleTech lack.

Individual Battletech factions have more lore than entire other GAMES And this one (finally!) looks like it portrays the clanner culture in detail accurately as it was in the lore and sourcebooks, and not just the mechs. The original Mechwarrior 2: and Mechwarrior 2 Expansion: Ghost Bear's Legacy, we played as Clans. In Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries, we were an IS Merc company. It is possible the campaign for MW5 Clans might be the parallel of Mech 2 Mercs, since in Mercs you battled a ton of Smoke Jaguar, culminating on the final mission being the battle against Smoke Jaguar at Luthien. But we will see, it looks interesting.

Surat is a common insult Smoke Jaguars use to describe Pirates and Mercenaries as they're not good enough to deserve being insulted by being called Freebirth or Stravag in their eyes, so nice call on the narrative designers. Also, almost the entirety of the warrior cast of the Smoke Jags are Vat tube clones. So, expect to see multiples of the same person at different ages. They are also the most cold, militaristic and zealous of the crusader clans. So the way they reacted to the situation is perfectly on point, it is a bizarre mix of emotionless professionalism combined with a desire of vengeance and seeing those who wronged them as scum.

Well done TTB, thank you for the time and effort you put into reporting on Clans, it's much appreciated. I have excited anticipation for the new engine and storyline development that seems to be in place. One of the top issues I will be focused on is customization for I do remember MechWarrior 2 and then MechWarrior 3 with its completely unrestricted ability to run anything in any Mech granted you had the slots and the weight to handle it. Also from MechWarrior 3 you could take your customized Mechs that you ran in campaigns and play online against any player out there who also had dial up service lol. That being said I would also like to see that in Clans because it was a great way to practice one-on-one etc with a player of your choice and you can really focus on how you want the team to work together unobstructed with no timers and game stats. As far as UI options I'm really hoping I can change colors for my heads-up display and even in game scenery due to the fact that I am color blind specifically with reds greens and browns mixing together it can really make things get lost on the screen with me which in MWO is probably my largest handicap and definitely decides if I win or lose on certain maps at times. But regardless of what any reviews say good or bad I'm looking forward to the purchase because I will do whatever I can to keep PGI afloat to progress forward with their good intentions to expand this game back to a very popular platform. Keep up the positive work PGI so far it's looking very promising.

Actually, in the lore, it's common for sibkin to have sex with other sibkin. There's no taboo on sex for Warriors and they often have recreational sex with other Warriors.

Apt description since both universes are based on real medieval period conflicts, according to each property's authors. GoT is a weird remix of the War of the Roses. Battletech sets out a modified retelling of the onset of the Dark Ages after the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire.

I am excited that the MechWarrior franchise is expanding and starting to include more RPG and lore elements. I am in turmoil that they decide not to keep it an open BattleTech universe (perhaps in later DLC?). Experiencing a dynamic BattleTech universe (inputs from AI and player campaign) like Hell Divers 2 and seeing the internal and external impacts would create a bigger fan base.

At the level of a single lance or star, even most mercenary companies barring the really big ones like the Northwind Highlanders, Mcarrons Armored Cavalry and Wolf's Dragoons you don't really have any impact except being another body on the battlefield. The only time that I know of smaller units having some sort of effect on the Inner Sphere at such a scale would be the Lone Wolves training the militia of the Alyina Mercantile League and defending them from pirates, and even then, they were just one of many mercenary commands, though the biggest player there at the time.

Looks like the story telling goes back to classic mechwarrior, where you had a Lance and not randos. Man all they ever needed to do was create a modern version of Vengence. Just model it after that.

The mech animations (shadow cat) look really stiff to me. I hope they clean it up a bit. But everything else looks great. Love the sat map, something starsiege had in 1999 and something mw5mercs needs badly.

It all handmade content they said as much. Also the game was originally made in UE4 for old gen console so they wouldn't have been able to use those tool. (And they don't currently work well at runtime so it there would be some big tech challenge)

Still so thankful for my best friend in grade schools dad who got me into this series with mechwarrior 4 then burning copies of the game and expansions for me to take home. I've been with my boyfriend for 8 years and recently have been trying to get him into the series with some co-op on merchwarrior 5 mercs and now we're both playing mwo. His biggest complaint is a lack of story driven missions with mercs 5. Hope this new game reaches more people of this awesome universe.

I am very much looking forward to what they do with this game. Still playing MW5 mercs with all the dlc that they have been making. 100% agree about the pilot AI. Also those previews being incorrect just show that the reviewers didn't play MWO or Mercs.

I'm looking forward to this much more than I was Mercenaries, mainly because of the story driven design. Story felt kinda bolted on on Piranha's Mercenaires, although it definitely improved since launch with a more feature rich story cinematic and of course the dlc mini-storylines. But to me, I am very interested in learning more about the lore and over-arching story simply because while I find it interesting, I've never really delved into it, so this is my chance. It might be nice to see how if your actions somehow loosely affect the perceptions of you and your unit though. For example, I have heard somewhere that the clanners tend to think of melee as being barbaric and even dishonourable, it would be interesting to see if I fight up close and brawl often if somehow the game tracks that and my character (Jayden?) is seen as something of a maverick etc, etc.

you can expect that many assets and code are coming from M5, they just don't have the budget/time to redo it. Perhaps it will be improved somewhat, but I'm not expecting too much

What surprises me is they don't engage with the modders that have done a lot of the hard work improving the AI. But there seems to be few developers that truly engage with their modding communities. The cool down pips on the cross hair could be toggleable in the options menu like in MW5: Mercs. The footage may just have them toggled off.

COME ON MAN...they make the Clans look nasty...and I am here for it!!! I have been all in on this franchise since its inception! I have played tabletop since 85, and still do. I remember the getting suspended from High School for installing it on the library PC!! Hey...they shouldn't have left the admin password out...just sayin!! I played at the Battletech Center in Chicago when I was stationed at Great Lakes for A school in the Navy. God those were awesome, 150 something toggles, switches, pedals and triggers, and none were for show!! I am happy where the franchise is now. The tabletop is still going strong, you have the tabletop on PC, you have MWO which I am a founder of, and you have Mechwarrior 5! Yes it's had some up and downs, but the modding community for it has been insane!! So I have High hopes for this, especially since my favorite Battletech novel series was The Legend of the Jade Phoenix Trilogy. Can't help it, I AM A CLAN MW....(0.o)

My main concern is that the game will be too shallow and even less depth than MW5 Mercs. I strongly prefer the mechlab customization that some mods have brought to the game to the point I don't particularly enjoy vanilla.

My biggest concern is the replay-ability. Mechwarrior 5 had great replay-ability. I'm afraid this one is going to be stuck in a linear story with very little replay-ability.

I am super hyped for this!! This looks like the Mech game I have been waiting for since Mechwarrior 4!! And yes I do enjoy MW 5 but I kind of miss the Linear story campaign like the good old days. Battletech could easily be Game of Thrones in space. So much rich good story and history. Still hoping for a mech assault 3 and a MechCommander 3 as well...... Getting this day one.

This game is what many fans have been waiting for years. Mercenaries had some shortcomings such as a lack of CG cutscenes, a soundtrack that didn't quite fit, and randomly generated stage levels. However, Piranha Games have taken on board feedback from players and improved upon these aspects. This time around, we get to experience the game from the perspective of Smoke Jaguar.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but MW5 is a disaster and a huge disappointment for any fan of the MW game franchise. Anyone who is content with a gameplay loop cycle that consists of "deploy on randomly generated map, blow up a few waves of poorly equipped punching bags, retreat, rinse and repeat" should spend the rest of their life playing rogue-likes.

The biggest problem in Mercs was the proc generated environments, and the AI - especially lancemate AI. The AI would get stuck constantly on terrain features in the proc generated levels, and would require tedious player intervention to fix. Further, the AI was just... bad. Especially once you get toward the endgame - it handled itself better with light and medium mechs, but heavy, and especially assault mechs, the AI just doesn't know how to use.

I would like it if some of these assets in clans could be crossed into mercenaries. I'd love to have clan mechs and the clan invasion to play in the sandbox style. I can handle the wonky AI in mercs but what frustrated me to no end was being in a battle in the scrapyard for instance, and lancemates would get stuck.

Because dlc sell less the older a game get and they rarely generate interest outside of the current player base aka not much visibility/growth opportunity. High priced DLC are very uncommon as they get compared to full game (You can find plenty of data/articles on the subject if you are interested). And it's kind of a MechWarrior tradition at this point

My guess is that we won't have cutscenes of the kind we saw for the trailer a lot. Maybe here and there one but I have my doubts they can keep it like that for the entire game. Hope that I am wrong about it. The tactical map reminds me of MechCommander in a simplier version. I hope that the radial menu is optional. I prefere hotkeys.

It's going to be interesting to see how they handle tukayyid since smoke jaguar did so poorly there. Unlike many of the other clans that despite defeats found success in the innersphere as a whole, smoke jaguar's story is pretty sad from their perspective. I'm curious as to the decision to tell a story from their side.

The " blue-green " colors name you are after is called teal or cyan which is brighter. Yeah I hope they dont gut actual great features, details MW5m had like regarding the pips etc. I assume the health is of the pilots? If the total structure+armor, I would prefer smaller mech paperdolls also HTAM bars as option in general

I suggest everyone read the Legend of the Jade Phoenix, starting with Way of the Clans. The books are available in various places and Amazon has the Kindle version. It'll be the best way to build a foundation so you can understand the terms, structure and society involved. There does appear to be a bit of disconnect with the introduction of the sibkins when meeting what appears to be a new commander? Usually the sibko has the same Warrior(s) until testing out. @@TheWorldsprayer while we don't know what we don't know it's possible something happened to their sibko. As far as a 2nd chance? Only happened once in lore. And it created quite the scandal with far reaching consequences. If you fail in any of your trials you're either dead or removed. Regulated to a lower caste. That's why I suggest reading the books It's a completely alien society from our own.

I won't buy this game unless the ai for enemies is vastly improved over the trash we got in Mechwarrior 5. They need to get rid of those tiny square mission areas and create some good quests/missions for us to do.

In the future it would be very cool to see a casual pvp system in the game. Like helldivers having missions that can be completed on either side of the conflict causing sectors of planets, if not the whole planet, to change sides.

the portraits look AI generated, a bit unfortunate the cutscenes with the models also had some weird AI shimmering you can see it on the kid's lips when it's that side view makes me worried how many corners they're gonna cut, already a lot of reused audio and the shaders look similar to the other game overall looks promising, but I'm still not holding my breath if they can make a compelling story campaign that can hold up on it's own at least with MW5 I can just have fun doing the mount and blade gameplay of it

I wish they would consider making a mwo2 because mwo has alot of flaws and the playercount reflects that. They should keep the mechlab the same but re think the store and match making. I would really enjoy light only pvp or any weight exclusive modes really. Also ditch the mech being locked to a game if you die early on. It doesn't add anything to the game and just makes people have to either wait or queue with another mech they might now want to play.

It's UE4+PS4/XB0 game ported to UE5 late during dev with the old gen version canceled. And it's not a big budget game either. You'll just have less LOD popping thanks to nanite but otherwise it's a game made with UE4 tech in mind

This looks much more engaging than MW5 Mercs, I couldn't even bring myself to complete the campaign with that. But MW5 Clans I can imagine getting some friends together to play it with. Fun times ahead!

The activation of the MASC or SC should better be bindable to a single key, like in MW5:M or MWO .. That whole menu is way to large, it looks and "feels" like a menu you would use for Mobile/Touchscreen or GamePad.. By now the whole UI looks somewhat bad for the most part IMho.. Right now im less stoked for the the Game than I was before seeing it. I sincerly hope thats just because its still a WIP and the UI gets a way better polish for the finished product..

I cannot get behind the command wheel, it screws with me often in MWO already... missing the usage of F1 to F8 and such, quick tapping and no menues screwing up the picture. Its for consoles ofc. Maybe it can be bound... just like adding CD for weapons groups on the reticule should definitely be part of the settings for the game.
