Some of these plants are also known as 'meadow saffron', which is really unfortunate as these autumn 'crocus' are toxic. But crocus sativus, the true saffron crocus, is perfectly safe. So if you're going to harvest saffron, specifically purchase and grow only that specific bulb and no other fall blooming types.

Hi Becky! It's none of my business but if your plum tree is dead and you remove it, I would also move the fire pit a couple of meters down and toward the block of cement edging you have on the right as that would create room for two extra garden beds. You also have all that under-utilized space along the back fence that offers no privacy so I personally would consider espaliered Plum ( to replace your potentially deceased tree ), Apricot, Peach, Nectarine trees in that space as it will take very little land space but provide maximum harvest and privacy potential of the area :-) I would use the traditional fan form of espalier for stone fruits because the branches are traditionally weaker wood. And on the subject of utilizing space, you could espalier concord grapes along the entire side of your red shed as they can be trained to grow up they can grow along the top leaving space underneath to espalier currant bushes or blueberries again maximizing harvest without using much land * hugs* sorry for writing too much!

Hi Becky! The plant looks like a melissa. You shoud get the rasberry bed a good clean...you need to remove all the old stemps and leave the ones from last year because they will barry fruit and the older ones will not. You can distinguish them by color. And now is a good time to spray all the trees for the new season (with red oil or something like that) and put a good amount of fertilizer. Hi from Croatia!

What does the red oil do?
@dunjabrence33512 жыл бұрын
@@MaryDavidson911 it prevents funghi and pests for 50% less treatments in season. It closes the cuts from last year and pores where the bugs might came. But you need to apply it now, before the buds "wake up".

What color do you cut back? That has always been my area of confusion. Do you cut back the brown and leave the white?
@dunjabrence33512 жыл бұрын
@@tiffanybecker8789 you cut off the white ones, and leave the brown. You shoud see when you cut that the white ones that they are hollow and have less weight. You need to cut them all the way to the bottom because they are done. The new branches from this year will bear fruit next year, or even this year (depends on the zone).

Potatoes and tomatoes are in the same nightshade plant family and both draw the same nutrients from the ground so usually are not planted too near each other. Could be why the potatoes didn’t thrive last year like they could have. Browsing companion plants might help you improve production. I love your enthusiasm for gardening. I grew up on a farm and have always had some kind of a garden wherever we lived. Can’t wait to get in the dirt again this year.

Leak tops - the dark green ones - are perfect for 'scrapps stock', vegi or meat based. All you need to do is weary them well of dirt, remove wiltu or dry bits, and cook them up with any other scraps like the carrot tops and peals. It's going to give you a very flavorful stock you can then can or freeze dry for great impact of flavors.

I love how excited & happy you get harvesting! It really goes to show, soil quality is more important than a full day of bright sun. I have one recommendation & one suggestion. I'd highly recommend you seed save from the plants that do well in half sun at the very least. Everyone should seed save everything, period, but in your situation, it's like a landrace. To produce the best plant for your environment. You don't have to worry about plant genetics crossing, bcz you're trying to create something new that thrives just for you, not for sale. My suggestion would be to build a small wall around your garden. The English discovered that the walls around their gardens created a micro climate within their garden. By helping to keep the soil warm enough to survive their cool, muggy, wet environment. Which in your case would help your low light issue. Then you won't have to rely solely on wood chips and the Sun to heat up your soil. Or when you have low light days, then it's just the wood chips. I know it's a expensive suggestion, but it would also act as a barrier to some pests, chickens & rodents. Multifunctional! Btw, that mystery plant looks like spearmint. Am I right?

I lost my husband in November. My raised beds got away from me because he was having a lot of pain in his knees. We were overhauling them because the wood was rotting. They won’t be in any shape to plant this spring. So I went big and bought 8 of the green stalk planters. I’m going to get my raised beds in shape to plant for fall produce and garlic. I also plan to make a cold frame with 2 of the green stalk planters so I can have cold hardy lettuce and other veggies for salads though the winter.
