What is your favorite winter shipping number of chicks? What range of numbers has the best success rate?
@McMurrayHatchery4 жыл бұрын
In the colder months of February and March we ship 25 chicks together. Over our many years of experience we have found that they need a certain number of chicks to not only keep each other warm, but also act as cushions for each other during shipping. We also supplement each box with heat packs and extra cardboard lining in the shipping box as needed. It's a balance of warmth but also not letting them get too hot and sweaty as that can be even more harmful to them.

i haven't gotten any from McMurray yet but i rarely have surviving chicks from shipping often half are DOA and then all but one or two die by the "safe age" as i call it now. and that's of chicks i got from Cackle Hatchery and John Blehm. in a way i end up with one or two out of $50-$200 worth of chicks. and it's heartbreaching and i gotta wonder if the handling like this is the cause.
@McMurrayHatchery4 жыл бұрын
I know it can look rough from a video but I can assure you our team takes the utmost care with our flock and chicks. As for your losses it can be a variety of issues. Obviously I can't speak to your situation but here are some things that can affect them: strength and viability of the chick/flock, weather, handling, delay in shipping, issues in a brooder, accidents, failure to thrive, unknown development issues, nutrition and water, etc. The list goes on. If you'd like to discuss further, you can PM me over on our Facebook page. We don't monitor these threads as often as we do there.

A question for you guys.....what happens when a 'double yolk-er' is used in an incubator? Do the chicks live or do they have any viability at all? We were just wondering about that. I loved that video, very informative and the sound of all the babies was great. We got baby chicks and geese from you folks many times years ago, all our flocks were very good producers, and I can't tell you how many times we had to go out and shoo the geese away so company could come in, it still brings a broad smile to my face..... Thank You for the memories.
@Heartofitall96914 жыл бұрын
The yolk feeds the chicks, it doesn't turn into a chick. Fun fact, you can eat fertilized eggs as long as you haven't left the eggs under a broody hen!!

Update: I picked up my chicks on April 8th at our local post office. Got them home and opened the box.......9 of 16 were dead and trampled. Talk about traumatizing! Another one died that night and another the next day. So very sad and disappointed. Apparently, they had a really rough trip. McMurray offered to send me new chicks, but I couldn’t handle the stress of that again so they refunded my $. I know that most are very successfully shipped, but my experience has me vowing to never order again! Original post: Mine are supposed to be hatched on April 6th! I handle them all and love them! Please make a video as to what happens to the unhatched or injured babies. With much respect 👍
@McMurrayHatchery4 жыл бұрын
Because we raise and hatch mostly rare breeds, each breed has a different hatch rate - which helps explain why they are rare breeds. As they hatch, they need to stay in the hatcher until they are dry which can take several hours. By the time we pull the chicks and they are all dried out and ready for shipping, it's pretty obvious if the others are not going to hatch at that point. We take great care to ensure the highest hatchability for all of our breeds, but nature sometimes has another plan. Any who don't hatch right are humanely put to sleep.
