After catching a swarm just 4 days earlier, I wanted to do the first hive inspection ASAP. This was a large primary swarm collected from a mango tree about 2 meters from the ground.

Much too big to fit into a standard swarm box, I took an 8 frame box. But I only had 7 frames on hand. 2 frames were stickies (frames that previously had honey in them) and 5 frames were without foundation. Some frames had wire and some not.
I was quite pleased to see how much these bees had done in such a short time. Most frames are filled with honeycomb. Plus, they started to build comb above the top bars. A good sign that the bees needed more room to work. So I decided to add the 8th frame (a frame with plastic foundation).
After the inspection you’ll see I added a queen excluder and a Flow super with 6 flow hive frames. After having a flow hive 3 years back, I wasn’t convinced it was the best solution for me. But this year I decided to try the flowhive again. This way I can compare it to the other (traditional Langstroth) hives I have sitting just a metre away.
As you can see it’s a strong swarm. And although I didn’t spot the queen, there is evidence of the queen’s presence. So I’ve decided to document this hive’s progress to witness its growth. Note of the 6 flowframes, 2 are brand new, coated with some bees wax to encourage the bees to use the frames. I placed these frames on the side walls. The other 4 frames are flow frames given to me by a friend (thanks Neal). So they already have the “bee smell” on them.
