First hunt with the SxS

Took the Dogs and my new SxS out for a quick hunt today. Indy found 3 coveys and Tuck found a single. Another really windy day with spooky birds.

Range is normally not limited by sawing off few cm. Limits get set by destroying choke and balance.

Personally I prefer the English way of pheasant shooting where the birds come to you.

I have never done an English style hunt, It sounds like fun. But I get the most enjoyment from the dog work.

Seems your letting your dog's work to far out . That gives the birds alot of run time .

Shawn, quail and Prairie Chicken don't run much, and the dogs can relocate them if need be. There is a lot of area to cover, and a big running dog is a huge help. I generally have more than one dog on the ground that have different ranges, and the bigger running dogs find the majority of the birds. They will stay on point as long as it takes me to get there. Do I every have birds that have run off, yes. But I get many more birds pointed and shot with the dogs with more range. There are people that don't like a lot of range. that is fine, but they are missing out on the reason pointing dogs were bred, and that is to hunt well outside gun range.

It is a 20. I only use 20ga any more. They do a great job shooting over pointing dogs.

Once the birds flush i allow them to move, but not before the birds flush. I have had some of my dogs fully broke, where they do not move till released.

sooo, I'm thinking of getting a stoger side by side. I'm torn though, should I get the 410 for fun shooting? or the 12G for hunting, and whether or not I should get the coachgun or the long gun.

I have a lot of doubles. Most versatile is usually a 20 ga with 3" chambers, 28" barrels choked IC (or C) and Mod. double triggers.

Dude with a 12 gauge you can buy adapters so you can use any other calibers/gauges that are smaller then it (ie 20 gauge, 410 gauge, 45acp, 9mm, ie)

A long barrel 12 gauge is made for hunting, not with cylinder bore barrels however. A Coach gun is only good for short range (40') self defence. In my opinion buy the .410 if you think you might have to shoot someone & you just want to piss them off.
