Basically the tighter the choke restriction the denser the pattern will be on a target at a givin distance variables would be the shot size used and changing the distance. Improved cylinder and modified are good choices for clay pidgeon shooting while full works well for Turkey or waterfowl hunting. When a shot gun is discharged the shot first comes out in what is called a shot string of about two to two and a half feet long as it travels forward it opens up into a pattern this,of course, all happens in a fraction of a second. Older scatterguns were manufactured with fixed choke restrictions while our newer ones have the invector system,removable and selective for what ever choke or combination of chokes you desire for an intended purpose. I hope this is additive info for what these two Brits were showing us.

In the UK you can own shot guns up to a maximum of 3 shots on a shot gun certificate, there is no limit to how many you can own and they can be fitted with sileners. Rimfire, center fire, air rifles (over 12ftbs) and shot guns with more than 3 shots go on your Fire Arms Certificate. You can also own silencers/moderators for these For pest/hunting you must use hollow points, polymer tips(like V-Max) or other frangible ammo. Most can keep 600 rounds of each caliber owned, no limit on cartridges.

Also just bought my first shotgun. Videos like this one are the go-to learning center . Want to learn about chokes? Watch a video. Want some input on a handgun you are contemplating? Watch a video. Want comparisons on multiple similar firearms? Watch a video. My new shotgun comes with 3 chokes. I could read the instructions, but where is the fun in that. Not only did I get a good explanation here, but had the added benefit of an English accent, and automatic improvement to any presentation in English. It was also very useful to see the differences in the shot patterns resulting from the different chokes. May I simply say, Bravo.

The top barrel is the same weight wether you shoot the top or bottom barrel first, it is the fact that the bottom barrel is closer to the point of resistance( your shoulder) that reduces the lift.

Just a note, generally your meant to have a tighter choke in the bottom barrel in a o/u that your shooting bottom barrel first, this is due to the guns being mainly used for driven pheasant, partridge and duck the first barrel will be used at a bird farther away, then the top barrel used (with a wider pattern) for when the bird has got closer .
@srspower9 жыл бұрын
+Max Hickling Many people shoot the top barrel first so they can reload after a single shot more quickly. But either way you want a wider choke for your first shot and a tighter one for your second because on the second shot after a miss the chances are the bird will be further away.

good vid man! I have a full fixed chock on my semi that I try and shoot clays with and it really doesn't go as well as I would like! does allow me a few extra seconds to get on target as the clay get further away. definitely not a criticism but just who I have been told is that there are chokes tighter then full called extra full for turkey hunting. also I have been told that foster or rifled slugs shoot the best and most accurate out of an improved cylinder.

My question is, What does it mean when a barrel has stamped on it either, Modified choke, Accu-choke, or Full choke? I'm new to shotguns and I just got a Mossberg 500 and want a barrel that I can screw different chokes in, but when I see the words on the barrel say accu-choke or modified choke it confuses me.

It's all in the video! Other than accuchoke but i believe accuchoke is just a brand name for mossbergs selection of chokes. On my Browning they are called invector plus, just branding. Modified however is a half choke. Thanks for watching :)

Hi. firing the bottom barrel first has nothing to do with having the weight of the top barrel stopping muzzle flip on recoil. Otherwise it would work the other way around? One point is that the bottom barrel is more 'inline' with the stock/shoulder to help reduce muzzle flip. 1/4 + 1/4 chokes are are probably all you need at most sporting clays, 1/4 +3/4 chokes are a good all round for game etc. I did like the choke comparison of shot in the field.

Question.How does the shot affect the threads in the barrel with no choke or is a choke required at all times.
@srspower10 жыл бұрын
A shotgun barrel is either removable choke, like in this video, or it is a fixed choke/cylinder bore. If it has removable chokes then yes a choke of some sort has to be fitted even if that choke is actually cylinder bore and so doesn't choke the shot at all. The reason is that inside the barrel it tapers out and has threads to accommodate the removable choke. If you shot with nothing in there the barrel may break and the threads would definitely be damaged.
@SandpiperN121PP10 жыл бұрын
So being new to guns and eager to learn all I can... here is a question.. does the choke you use also affect the travel distance of the pellets?
@srspower10 жыл бұрын
It has no impact of the power of each pellet but it does keep them closer together for longer. The more spread out they are the less overall power the target receives. So they increase the effective range rather than the actual range.

I almost forgot. Hope you got yourself some plastic snap caps for that nice OU so you can safely decock the gun when not in use without dry firing. Keeping the internal strikers in the cocked position can weaken the striker springs, these are a good item to have, as dry firing a double barrel or an Over & Under can damage the breach face, as well as the strikers. Keep up the good videos bro.

Thank you indeed. Since 1971 I've heard shooters talking about choke in their scatter-guns, but trying, in ignorance, to relate it to the automotive choke, it meant nothing to me, even when an accommodating man at the gun club lent me his nice Browning under & over to have a pop at the clay birds. A nice piece indeed, was that cannon and I didn't want to give it back! We were shooting No 4 shot in home reloads - No 4 because that was the best bet against brush tailed possums up in the trees, or a careless bunny in the beam if you were lucky. Cheers, Col, NZ.

@srspower10 жыл бұрын
For slugs, I would check with the manufacturer but ELEY Bennekke suggest a modified (1/2) choke. For number 4? Really depends on how far away the target it that you want to shoot and how good a shot you are!
@jamesworth32969 жыл бұрын
Okay, you want a few comments, the reason you fire the bottom barrel first is because of law of physics, for every action there is a re-action.When you shoot the bottom barrel the return force comes directly back to the rear, if you study the configuration of your gun you will see that the bottom barrel and the stock, right back to the heel and toe, is in a straight line therefore the returning force is able to come back smoothly whereas the top barrel is and stock are in a S shape, more or less so the back force has to find a course which in this case is not straight and therefore flips the barrel, not always up in many case it can be down. The full choke is 40thou constriction of the bore size, therefore a full choke if measured correctly cannot be a three quarter choke, that would be 30thou constriction. Having said that, on production guns many bore sizes do differ from the norm and one size constriction could be tighter or more relaxed than the advertised bore size, you can, as you know, "reduce or tighten your perceived choke" by using different make cartridges. I see you wing shoot, so you will know that the tight choke is fired first because the quarry is further away, when it come closer the open choke is the one preferred. While William W Pape of Newcastle on Tyne is usually attributed with the invention of the choked barrel, Winchester invented the mobile choke system,i,e the screw in choke. Be glad to help you with more information if required.

Thank you so much for this video I am just about to apply for my shotgun license and the clay ground that I shoot at we're saying what chokes are you going to get on your gun and what type of gun are you going to get, but this videos has really helped, one quick question , I'm left handed and a few gun shop owners and clay pigeon instructed said I need a left hand gun to make my shooting perfect , do you agree with that and could you recommend a good gun for the price range of about £400-£500.

I think you should do IM or M on the bottom and F on top b/c you want to concentrate your pellets when the bird is far and flying away. You would normally shoot bottom first and you'd shoot bird at a closer range on the first shot.

Really good comparison video guys.. I noticed in your Shotgun Cartridges Explained video that you have an assortment of Fibre Wad shells and was wondering how well they pattern through each choke compared to plastic wad shells :-)

Very good video. I am a beginner and would like to know if 1/4 and 3/4 choke is OK for any game?

Richard Pymar Strange combination! The usual game chokes are half and three quarters so modified and improved modified. But whatever works for you is good. Thanks for watching :)

both my shotguns are 1/1 and 1/2 but I would love a gun in 1/4 and 1/2. Good for basically any game out there

Just the fact that Piers Morgan was saying guns should be banned in the US because the ban made the UK much better.. crime-wise. Personally I didn't know for sure. Are there heavy restrictions on them?
