Hey there! We had no problem at all sleeping in the same room as tourists. I believe the rule is only for local people actually! Also, very happy to hear that you're heading to Sumatra. It was honestly one of our favourite travel destinations and we can't wait to return. I highly recommend Smiley's homestay in Berastagi! The owner is now a lifelong friend of mine and she will make you feel extremely welcome.
