First Impressions of Cardiff Castle | American in the UK

As I explore my new city of Cardiff, Wales I knew visiting the Cardiff Castle was at the top of my to do list.
Over the years I have explored many castles while traveling but none of them are as unique and detailed. It was the perfect day trip in the city. I'm really loving living in the UK.

When my eldest son was around 8 we spend the whole summer school holidays visiting every castle around Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire (a project for school) we had so much fun!! I absolutely love Pembroke castle near where I live and go there often with the kiddies and also Carew castle and Manorbier (all in Pembrokeshire). Ive never been to it but Raglan castle I’d love to explore. Lots to see and do 😊 xx

My homeland! I used to go to Cardiff every weekend, and I sang at the opera there. I love that you really looked into the history of the castle and your enthusiasm. Yes, I also always thought it was super cool that the castle is right in the middle of the city. Best wishes from a Welsh woman living in Germany.

Put Castle Coch which means Red Castle on your bucket list it looks like a fairytale Castle which is very close to Cardiff which was owned by the same family as Cardiff Castle .

I worked at Cardiff Castle for many years - 4:59. I was a silver service waiter at venues such as weddings and important events. This room is where I was based mainly, it's a tight squeeze with all the tables! Beautiful place.

Glad to see you enjoying Wales. In 2018 I toured the Isle Of Bute and toured the Marquis of Bute’s home there. The likeness between the two is great. I think they were both designed by the same man. Not far up the A470, near Tongwynlais is Castell Coch, the Bute’s “summer home” and is a Rhine Valley style castle, again styled by the same designer. About half a mile from the village centre. Not far from Caerphilly railway station is a much bigger castle with a moat and a leaning tower damaged by canon fire.

William Burgess, was the architect, also been to bute , to see mount Stewart, was rebuilt after a fire , absolutely fantastic place and location, William Burgess was also involved with pierhead building Cardiff bay , got the same red bricks ! In its construction ,

Motte & Bailey: the Motte is the raised mound that a castle keep is built on and the Bailey is the outer defensive perimeter wall. The Marquesses of Bute owned most of the Cardiff area for generations, having been involved in developing the South Wales coal and steel industries, as well as constructing Cardiff Docks. The title "Marquess of Bute" is Scottish and their family name is Crichton-Stuart. Great video!

Coolio. My wife and I live here too. We just moved from California back in September. We have been meaning to go for the full tour but have only done the free exploring inside. It's so beautiful to walk by and visit.

The castle wasn't built in the middle of the city. The first structure at the site was built by the Romans. There was no city at that time. Before you enter Cardiff Castle, look at the walls on each side of the gate. Anything below the red brick line is Roman.

Lovely to see another great video of your one of your days out in Cardiff, Ash. Not many videos out there showing the city from a tourist perspective so glad you're giving the city a bit of exposure. There's many a fantastic Welsh castle. I'd recommend, Caernarfon, Conway, Harlech and Beaumaris. And English castles on the border (with Wales), Ludlow and Stokesay.

Cardiff City and Cardiff Bay are also wonderful spots for Doctor Who fans. I geeked out all my Whovian favorite episodes filmed there. I also went to the Doctor Who Experience on the Bay which was a museum for everything DW before they removed it. BBC Studios are also there on the Bay and the Beautiful modern looking building for the BBC orchestra. Cardiff is beautiful indeed

I visited Cardiff back in 2015 for the Doctor Who Experience, which is sadly closed now. I really loved the city and wanted to come back, because I was only there for a weekend, I had to skip a lot of things, including Cardiff Castle. Hope you are doing well, cheers! 😃

Cardiff Castle is amazing. Wow. Thanks for showing us Ashley. They showed great foresight putting it right in the centre of the city! I've had loads of opportunity to go inside and look round and I never have! That Lord Bute was the richest man in the world in his day,the Jeff Bezos of his times. That fantastic opulent fairytale high victorian fantasy interior he had done in honour of his young wife for their honeymoon. There are lots of castles in Wales so you might be busy this year. Your lovely smile is an antidote to other things we are hearing about. God bless you.

Ashley. British Museum is probably the best free entertainment in London. Get an early train and spend too the day there. Not far from Covent Garden and the theatre district

If you live in Cardiff you can pay £7 and get a 'key to the castle' which grants you free entry and discounts on food and souvenirs for 3 years. Well worth it.

There's a secret room in the burger king opposite the castle, ask the staff inside to see it, would make for a good video

A tip for walking around historic buildings and houses, wear your backpack on the front, that way you won't turn round and knock a precious artifact over or to the floor. Some places insist on it. It also hinders "Dippers"

My favourite castle to visit in England was Warwick Castle, considered by experts to be one of the best preserved medieval castles. The Dungeons are pretty spooky for sure!
