First Impressions of Hong Kong | We Got Free Tickets on Hong Kong Airlines 🇭🇰

It's our first day in Hong Kong and as Americans, we are experiencing our first East Asia country and city and forming our true first impressions of Hong Kong. We arrived early in the morning ready to explore but Hong Kong really surprised us. It's such a huge, impressive, and fast city and our culture shock was so real. So much was happening, with so many people all busily moving it was really hard for our shocked American Midwestern brains to comprehend!
How We Got Free Hong Kong Plane Tickets:
Let's start this description out with basically the whole reason why we went to Hong Kong.. we were able to get free Hong Kong Airlines tickets. Now when I say "Free" I should clarify, that although the base fare of the ticket was "free" this does not include the taxes and fees, which actually end up being more expensive than the base fare anyway. So to say these tickets are free is a bit of a stretch, but hey, if the airline can claim it's free so can I for my video title! In total our free tickets cost about $80 each, which really isn't too bad either. The Hong Kong Board of Tourism is doing a bunch of special offers to try to get more tourists into the city. When I found this out, I searched how to get free tickets and we were lucky enough to snag two of about 100,000 tickets they were giving away for this promotion. I doubt there are any left, but you can try to search for it on Google and see. We ended up getting about $50 off tickets to Hong Kong because of the promotion.
How to get to Hong Kong from the Hong Kong Airport:
After an early flight, we arrived at the Hong Kong airport which is located on an island off the coast of the actual city. To get to downtown Hong Kong from the Airport, the easiest way is to take the Express Train which will bring you directly from the airport to downtown Hong Kong. It will make a few stops on the way to different popular spots and finally end in the business district of the city at Hong Kong Station. From there you can connect to pretty much any other place in the city.
Americans First Impressions of Hong Kong;
When we got off the Express Train, we were instantly thrown into what we suspected was the business area of Hong Kong. Massive glass skyscrapers as far as the eye can see, tons of business people walking around in suits, and just so many dang people/cars everywhere. We were amazed, overwhelmed, and overall just having a great time trying to figure out this busy city. We stopped at the best place for breakfast in the whole city, McDonald's (Sarcasm but it was good) and figured out exactly where we wanted to go. We walked through the streets for about a mile. Through the business of the famous area Central and up to the Hong Kong Botanical Garden which was another unexpected surprise. It was probably the best Botanical Garden we've been to in Asia so far. There were abundant walking trails, beautiful views, and most importantly a full fledge free fracking zoo. It also had free wifi like many other places in the city. From there we walked to Hong Kong Park and once again were thoroughly impressed with what a free park had to offer. It was a beautiful park with man-made waterfalls, more animals, sculptures, and a spiral tower with one of the best views of the city you can get.
From there, we headed into a VERY fancy mall and did what we love to do... check the grocery store for unique snacks in food. Let me just say, this grocery store was something else. So many items from all over the world, the fruits were for some reason MASSIVE, and the place was just filled with fresh food stalls and bakeries. So we walked around that area for a bit, got a pastry, and went down to the bay across the street. Now we were on the South Island of Hong Kong and I would argue that the view from the other side is better, but, it's still a magnificent view either way. It was shocking just how steep and massive the mountains are all around the city.
Finally, around 4 PM we started heading to our hotel in the most populated area of Hong Kong, Mong Kok. Let me just tell you, the vibe of this area was totally different. The number of tourists increase as did the number of people (and we thought I was busy before). We stayed at the Metropark Kowloon for about $100. It wasn't cheap but nothing decent in Hong Kong was. The hotel room was pretty nice and the water pressure was killer. We would have gone out in Mong Kok to eat delicious Hong Kong dinner but unfortunately, I came down with some pretty rough stomach issues that would haunt me for the next 2 days. Don't eat McDonald's guys, no matter how much better it is in Hong Kong!

Ahhh hong kong!!! The shopping paradise! The country has been very modern eversince. Everything is modern and organize. Full of buildings cuz the spaces are small so high rise building makes more sense. I sont think they have a lot of malls like Sogo but shops r just on the side of the street whether luxury or not. Hong Kong really amazes me. Undoubtedly British vibes. I was there in 97 handover and even waved at Prince Charles now King. I was kinda surprised to see in your video that the old Toyota Crowns' taxis are still existent. I wonder if the names of the MRT stations are still named after the British royalty. Your video made me want to return there in the near future. Miss you guys. Return to Quezon City asap haha ❤ enjoy the view in Victoria Peak before I forget find the antenna of Jollibee okay!!!

Cuz its expensive to maintain a car in HK. You also have to rent monthly garage. Not all apartment has free parking space. I lived there for 3 years. There’s always a reminder to look right first cuz it a Right hand drive country, tourist are used to look at left first. That building is designed based on feng shui and wind gust.

Mongkok used to be the cheaper parts of Hong Kong (shopping wise) but then it got more modern and more expensive. We used to visit and stay at the Tsim Sha Tsui shopping district area when it was way affordable then (we still do) but then that place became a high-end district for those who have more money to burn aside from the Hong Kong area which is really the original high-end place to shop. Try going to Victoria peak via cable car and see how much the restaurants there cost. Pretty sure its way above your head now. Lol 😯

I love Hong Kong a lot. They have so many different styles of foods! 😍I know the Hongkongers are not the same group with Chinese. HK in 1800s, the residents were the HK Tanka people that is a ethnic group who living on the boat for hundreds of years in HK area. After HK became a colony of UK, they move to the land and learn Cantonese for communication. They are not a same group with Han Chinese, and never related to Chinese history. But China like to call almost of ethnic groups to Han Chinese, just like Russia like to call Eastern European to Russian. The foreigners outside of China can never find out the truth of Chinese history, the translation version is also based on the Chinese version. The record and the points of views of history are controlled by their government. The Hongkongers can not fit in China because their ocean culture are different than the mandarin culture. They are not the same group of people with Han Chinese . Some of their ancestors are not Han chinese, even nowadays almost of them are just half chinese. China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are just like Indian, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Tibetan and Inner Mongolian are not related to any Chinese or Cathaysian culture, they are eastern asians, not Chinese. Uyghur people are Eurasians, their face is similar to Turks. And there are lots of ethnic groups in Yunan are southeast Asians, they don’t have any Chinese culture. their ancestor are Hong Kong Tanka people, South eastern Asian, Wish the Hongkongers can be independent or return to UK. #hongkongers #hongkong #hongkongese

I really don't want to see this kind of comments about the country's political ideology and so on under this kind of travel video. If it is said that the Chinese government has done a poor job, making their country and its people backward and unhappy, there will always be backlash. So there is really no need for you to spread some misleading remarks here. Even the earliest local residents in Hong Kong migrated from Guangzhou, China in the past one or two hundred years. They brought Chinese culture with them, and many traditions of Hong Kong people still remain. So you can't pretend you don't see it. Hong Kong is just a small island, and it is impossible for humans to appear for no reason. In your remarks, it is said that Hong Kong is Southeast Asian and has not been influenced by Chinese culture. It is really ridiculous. Even Vietnam, which is further south, has always been influenced by Chinese culture. I don’t know. How long will you have to deceive yourself with your world view and historical view, please stop spreading these false information

@@user-fn2wg8gj2n let’s do a research of Hong Kong Tanka people and Baiyue. Guangzhou do not have any fishing village, Hong Kong got lots of fishing villages until now. You guys translate all the old history on the China map is basic on Chinese version, the history is used to be controlled by their government. Before there were over than 20 countries on this map, what’s China? All the old history on this map is called Cathay, but you guys made a huge mistake on it that concluded all the history on this map to be china and Chinese. That’s why called existing 5000 years. It’s a joke. Russian and Eastern European are from Slav, west European are from Germanic peoples and ancient romans. Cheung Chau Bun Festival is only happening in HK, if the Hongkongers and Chinese are really in a same group, why do they have so much differences? Do you speak different language with your group of people? Their ancestors are not the same group with Mandarin Chinese, it’s the truth.

Boys, there are cheaper bus options than the Airport Express train. About a third of the price. And better views too.
