My first impressions of this vintage splash bottle of Chanel No 22 Eau De Cologne that I purchased on Ebay.
If anyone has any comments or advice I would really appreciate your input, many thanks.

About me - I'm Claire and I live in the UK. My taste in perfumes is usually quite sweet but not too sweet, I love white florals but not tuberose so much. I like gourmands as long as they smell like perfumes still, I require my perfumes to change a little bit as I wear them ie not linear. I don't enjoy oud, leather, cumin, saffron or strong patchouli however there can be occasions where I do like perfumes with these notes if they are not too dominant. I enjoy most florals as long as they are backed up with something sweet or perhaps resins / insense. I tend to not enjoy anything very soapy. I also don't really enjoy very green fragrances. I am averse to overdoses of ambroxan and iso E super (timbersilk or similar) just because I find it annoying! I have no problem with synthetics in perfumery but I do enjoy perfumes that have some notes that at least smell like they could be from nature. My favourite type of perfumery is indie and I love Francesca Bianchi, Teone Reinthal, 4160 Tuesdays and Papillon Artisan Perfumes.

Adverts - I know they are annoying but they earn me a few pennies from the Adsense which I put back into buying perfumes to talk about on this channel.

I'm going to need a database on how to accurately identify authentic Chanels. I feel like there is some info out there, but not so comprehensive. I like 22! More so than No. 5 at the moment but I'm enjoying No. 5 lately.

I didn’t think I like No 5 much but recently got some vintage pure parfum that I really enjoy.

I remember all men's fragrances in the 70s were splash bottles and I hated it! I couldn't understand why women's fragrances had atomizers and men's didn't. I don't know anything about vintage perfume. Very sorry to hear this one disappointed you...it's an EDC so perhaps there wasn't a lot of perfume oil to begin with? Thanks for sharing, Claire!

I think it was because for a long time the only acceptable form of fragrance for men was in the form of aftershave. So the next progression from that was a cologne in spalsh form too. Then a splash eau de toilette.

@@SmurfygurlyLol. Though for strong perfumes, I do like to dab. It also feels more vintage and glamorous. It's important to have clean skin. Lest the contents become cloudy. However, at other times, especially with fresh summer fragrances, spraying is more pleasurable.

@@hausacat Yes, I think you're right! :) It was always so difficult to apply and then your hands smelled like fragrance all day.

@@dcjimr1 It also seems a bit wasteful. Product ending up on hands that will be washed several times a day. An extra step, however, y ou can always decant into a bottle with an atomiser. ; )

I haven't had a chance to try vintage Chanel No.22 but so far I've preferred some modern Chanel EDPs over the vintage versions (eg. No.19). I think the aging has thrown the balance off certain vintage juices. Totally can relate with you.

What's interesting is that RotLS says the older boxes have the Eau de Cologne or Eau de Toilette printed above the CHANEL. Whereas on this box it's printed below. I can't remember what year the order changed.

I think before the 1970s the terms eau de toilette and eau de parfum were not in use so if it's a 60s bottle Eau de Cologne doesn't mean what it does now ie a low strength concentration. There was a defunct name of 'parfum de toilette' in use too. Raiders of the Lost Scent helpfully says 'Chanel is one of the most difficult perfume houses to understand when dating a perfume' in their piece on Chanel batch codes which use 00-99 for the months in order then start all over again! Nightmare. The box looks very like my late 1970s No.19 (also a splash which also dates it to 60s-70s). I can't see why anyone would fill an old bottle with something else - there just wouldn't be any old fragrance vibe at all.

I'm in mourning and found myself going on a vintage perfume spree. (I'm on a no buy for the next four months now. Hopefully, that habit will stick.) I'm confident that the ones I have chosen can be resold later, if necessary. I've bought some items from eBay. From both professional and ordinary individuals. I've also bought from Etsy and Gumtree. So far, so good. It's important to check the the seller is reputable. Do they have a store dealing with vintage fragrances or is this a one off sale from an non-professional? What kind of reviews do they have? What is their satisfaction percentage? Sometimes a family member will sell off the perfumes of a deceased family member and the products are bona fide. However, we have to be on the lookout for unscrupulous sellers looking to make a fast buck. Obviously, items that come in spray form are more tamper proof. Be aware that sometimes old sprayers can be faulty. (I bought one that leaked each time I sprayed it. Fortunately, the seller gave me a full refund. They also offered the option of a heavy discount.) Boxes with intact original cellophane is best, but you'll likely pay a premium for that. Be a bit suspicious of opened items that are still completely full. Especially if the bottle label or bottle itself is worn. Bottles can be topped up with perfumers' alcohol or something similar. Also, pay attention to the colour of the juice. Vintage juice tends to be darker. Perhaps some scammers are clever enough to doctor their offerings with colourant to mimic this. In the case of your bottle, Claire, it does sound as if it was topped up with basic iso e super in perfumers' alcohol (Which is pretty cheap by comparison.) Of course, I'm only guessing. Trust your own nose. Less experienced noses may not notice such a deception. Iso e super is added to so many fragrances these days. It blends in and smells quite appealing to a lot of noses.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I believe this seller is selling items from his mothers house, I don’t believe he has tampered with the juice so I can only guess that age has ruined the fragrance being used and a splash. I assume used splashes will deteriorate faster than sealed sprays. I’ve requested a return but the buyer doesn’t want to allow that so it’s down to EBay to decide. Either way lesson learned and I think I’d rather pay more for a sealed bottle in future, maybe only risking a used one if it’s bargain basement price.
