First impressions, Tamiya,1/48 A 10A Thunderbolt II

I take a look at another old Tamiya kit has it stood the test of time?

Back in the late 80’s I was sitting in a house on the southern coast of Maine USA and an A 10 Warthog came screaming at me just off the ocean surface and just POPPPED over the house and flew on. Scared the crap out of me. Needless to say I’ve been fascinated with this aircraft ever since. Jason, if you find a more approachable build of this for a novice, I’ll definitely join the build. Thanks much.

That clear piece is to be mounted at the tail to keep the model form being a tail sitter. It is there as an option if you don’t want to put weights in the front. Love your reviews.

Would be nice if Tamiya would come out with a "modern" A-10C. Nice review as always Jason. I'll try to keep up better next year.

Hi Jason, another great First Impressions. Even these old kits can be a lot of fun to build. It's obviously not as good a kit as a new release, but for someone new to the hobby it would be a great kit to cut their teeth on. I hope you had a great Christmas. Have a great day. Jeff

It's very common for old kits to have raised panel lines and details. The exception seems to be when it comes to control surfaces. Even on older kits the flaps and ailerons were done with recessed lines showing that they were meant to move.

I looked at this kit several times before deciding on the hobby boss version which has some good detail and not as old. Great review. Thanks 👍

Nice review of an old kit , which I also have started and put back in the box as it was busting my mojo , moulding on some parts don’t match up, ordinance is a lot to be desired and should be replaced with aftermarket, and I also have the hobby boss kit which doesn’t fare much better….that long clear part is to stop the tail from dropping and to reduce weight stress on undercarriage I would guess as it’s a tail sitter without adequate weight in the front .

Nice review, Jason. Re the off set front undercarriage, this is to do with the "little gun" as you put it having its ammo boxes etc wrapped around the bay and that 60mm cannon is what gives this aircrafts famous "brutt" sound when fired. I must also agree that those paint/decal instructions leave something to be changed

Nice review of a very old, but decent looking kit! 😃 👍 I like that it has markings for the A-10s that were stationed at RAF Bentwaters, which is not too far from I live now - RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall are my local bases, so it good to see some Suffolk recognition! 😊 It was probably considered 'state of the art' when it first released...!! 😀 I've never built this Tamiya version, but I do have, and built, one of the recent Hobbyboss boxings..... I really enjoyed it; it went together well and is very detailed - no general raised panel lines either... 😉 In the boxing I have, there are about 4 colour schemes and the rather spiffy black/dark grey scheme included has a very silly spelling error on the decal sheet and in the instructions in a very prominent place - the anniversary markings on the engine cowls, which is a shame... 😳 Overall though, it's a good kit, though I really do fancy the new Academy 1/48th A-10... 😉
