First impressions Vanguard Models 1/64 HM Harpy

A nice review, many thanks and I agree Vanguard Model kits are well designed kits, with top quality build manuals, plan sheets and materials . I have already built 10 Vanguard Model models and will soon complete by 11th build. Jim Hatch produced an excellent build log for the Harpy on MSW and I have the kit ready to go once I have completed by current Vanguard Model build.

I agree - and Merry Christmas! :) One thing about the 22 foot cutter, I decided to include this at a very late stage, so it was 'tacked on' at the very end of the development stage. This is because I was having these new boats designed for me, and was not sure if they all would be done in time for me check the files and produce them. There are full building instructions for this 22 foot cutter on one of the plan sheets, so it is not missing from the kit. Regarding the etching for the plank lines and treenails, I do know that many contemporary Admiralty models (some of the best in the world) have their planking lines on the hull and decks scribed on, rather than individual plans. The laser etching is just an extension of this practice. I figured if it was good enough for these fine models in the 1700's, then it's certainly good enough for me!

Incredibly thorough review. Chris Watton at Vanguard makes assembly so much less error prone than any other kit manufacturer. I wish he made models for 17th century vessels. Perhaps such vessels are out of his area of knowledge. They certainly have less information regarding the dimension and design, and perhaps that is why he concentrates on 18th and 19th century vessels. Far less guesswork.

@@DARIVSARCHITECTVS Thank you! My main love is 18th Century vessels, but I do like earlier types. I am hoping to have the 17th Century warship ready in two years (carvings take a long time and costs are great for such a commission) - but preliminary designs have already been started. I think Vasa is already well catered for, as is Sovereign of the Seas, so would not ever design those.

@@christopherwatton1257 I am interested in seeing what you come up with, Chris. I'm currently working on th Sovereign, making custom decorations for 3D printing. No one has ever made them available before. All the kit out there are woefully inaccurate.

The Union Flag is not period specific for the year of any particular vessel, but just there to show these kits are developed and produced here in the UK.
