Shinobi in naruto can focus the chakra on the soles of their feet to walk on water and walls, I don't think that focusing a little chakra on the palms of their hands to not slip towards the blade is a problem, so the guard and texture of the handle is probably unnecessary.
@BvLee8 сағат бұрын
The bigger reason for why his sword doesn't have any wraps or a guard is because it's a shirasaya, which is just a barebones sword meant to be put in storage rather than be used in combat. When need for it arises, the blade would be taken out of the shirasaya and put into a proper handle with the necessary wraps and guard. With how little he used it I'd say he just couldn't be bothered.
@marhawkman3038 сағат бұрын
yeah, it's weird, but canonical actually. It's the same logic as wall walking. That's one of the things Naruto had to learn early on as a ninja skill using his chakra to cling to walls.
@seedfan854814 сағат бұрын
It's funny that Shad mentions telescopic swords. That sword was from Naruto Shippuuden and is derived from a chokotō, a previous generation of nihontō. It is refered to as a kusanagi sword, due to him being trained by Orochimaru who uses a telescopic sword called the Kusanagi blade. Sasuke streams lightning chakra through his to increase its cutting potential and will occasionally shape the lightning to extend the blade. As for why Sasuke chose a sword, it was because the mangaka was a sasuke simp and wanted to depict sasuke as more advanced than Naruto at the beginning of Shippuuden, so he gave him a sword and stiffed Naruto with only kunai and shuriken. As to why that type of sword, probably to cut down on the time needed to draw the panels with Sasuke in them as he was already a rather overdesigned character.

Once the anime ninja battles start he doesn't use this thing at all apart from a few occasions where hes used it in combination with some of his ninja powers such as using it as a lightning rod to empower his lightning type skills. Also his sword is a chokuto not a katana.

Its not touched on very much in the show, but it does in-fact do that. As sasukes sword is a clone of orochimaru’s sword which has an enchantment to be able to cut through anything. Also i believe that his sword is meant for assassinations… because hes a ninja, so a sword in that shape is easier to kill people through the floor boards of a traditional Japanese style home, which is the kind of house he and his brother grew up in. It's actually a chokutō, not a katana. Swords like Sasuke's Blade of Kusanagi were historically used very early in Japanese history starting from the Kofun period, with three main styles existing: Kabutsu-tachi, rokkaku-sōtōken, and hōtō-tachi. By the start of the Nara period, only the hōtō-tachi style survived, and the chokutō would be completely abandoned as a practical weapon of warfare in favor of the larger curved Tachi and Uchigatana/katana by the middle of the Heian period, in the 10th century. Until then, however, they served as worthy replacements to the earlier tsurugi of the Jomon period and earlier. The actual design of the chokutō itself may have been inspired by a similar sword, the Chinese jian.

it's a weapon whose design is based on a Shirasaya. A common design theme. However the Shirasaya isn't a weapon, it's a preservation blade container, you cannot slash with it because it's made of soft wood, the "handle" would break. It's just an air tight blade container when you don't expect the Katana to be used for a long time.
@larquefausse362311 сағат бұрын
Shirasaya can be made for storage/transport. They can also be made out of harder finished wood for a sturdier mounting that was less than ideal, but still serviceable enough to deploy. This style was popularized in modern pop-culture fiction, but one can look at historical examples of shikomizue that weren't fooling anybody to infer that full battle-ready koshirae was unnecessary for Japanese swordsmen.

Women could conceal them in a purse or hand muff and they were sometimes sold as 'muff pistols'. The muff pistol preceded Deringer and some flintlock versions remain. The guns you are thinking of are called Derringers. They were invented sometime in the 19 century and were single or two shot break action pistols that were small enough to fit inside pockets. Hence why old west brothel workers used them to deal with handys customers by concealing them within their garter belts. They are still made today and some people do actually carry them for self defense here in America due to how small and easily concealable they are. Granted having two shots of .38 or 9mm isn’t ideal in the slightest when it comes to self defense it is still better than having nothing at all.

S: "... and strip away everything else..." - T: "right, just get a steel bar." 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That discussion killed me. You two have amazing chemistry, both in the professional discussion sense as well as the comedian duo sense. Also, calling it the final evolution of the Mall Ninja Sword was brilliant. 🤩🤩🤩

Ok i think this is obviously based on a Shirasaya (白鞘) so it _somewhat_ makes some sense

There are one and two shot pistols out there, usually referred to as derrengers. They were reaonably popular for their ease of concealment but as soon as reliable compact semiautos came about they lost favor fairly quickly. The one thing that keeps them hanging on is that they can be chambered in cartriges more powerful than a small semiauto can handle, but you're choosing two somewhat powerful shots over six to ten adequately powerful shots.

That sword is a predecessor to the Katana is called -Chokuto- It's divereces to the Kantana are: Straight edge No guard/tsuba it was in a lot of cases (not all) shorter And the handel developt over time from a short handel that gives only space to get the support hand only situation wise on the handel. And over the decades the handel getting longer to a 'regular' Katana sized handel for 2hands.

@@LordCasterwell He's speaking english, not Japanese, so he's using english pronounciation conventions. Have you ever heard Japanese people say english words? Do you get as offended then? Cause then you would get a fit from just hearing them say "Makudonarudo" 😂 I was a huge anime and Naruto fan before. And I have lived in Japan and studied Japanese. But come on man, you're just being silly. It's not that serious.

I think Shad was talking about the Derringer, a small pistol that's easily concealed and only holds 1-2 bullets. And for Tyranth, I know several people that have and carry them.

An interesting note regarding aspects of realism, is that when we first see this sword, there is a slow and dramatic drawing sequence which clearly shows the blade clearing the sheath, and how far Sasuke has to stretch his arm to do so from the position he is carrying it in.

There is no shortage of suspension of disbelief required when it comes to how swords are designed and utilized in anime. The invisible back scabbard, where a character attaches their sword to absolutely nothing on their back, is one of my favorites. Sasuke's sword is fairly inoffensive though. Aside from the fact there is no design element for securing it to his hip and the practical implementation flaws you pointed out, it does at least _look_ like a sword. And a cool one at that. I like the sleek minimalist design. It's a far cry from Kisame Hoshigaki's "sword" that we see early on in Naruto, essentially a California fan palm wrapped in gauze.

"The invisible back scabbard, where a character attaches their sword to absolutely nothing on their back" Devil may cry comes to mind. Although the reboot gave a better explanation for how he can carry his sword on his back.

A stylized Casket blade. Some parts of it's flawed design could be fixed with a little bit of work. For edge awareness, a tapering of the hilt or some kind of orientation relief added to the hilt would allow at a touch to know where the edge line is. Personally would plane down the entire thing to reduce the bulk and in addition to the edge orientation marks, I'd at least carve some kind of gripping pattern into the hilt to at least give some measure of grip to it. I've tried working with similar swords before and having a smooth surface looks nice, but is totally impractical for a combat weapon. The only counter side to this is if the wielder is wearing good textured gloves, but even then, the firmness of the grip is going to be an issue. Fun note: That style commonly was used for storing a blade in case it needed to be refitted, reworked, or stored for a long period of time.

A couple of things people have already pointed out, but a bit of elaboration. That isn't a katana. That is a chokutō, which is a single-edged Japanese straight sword. Chokutō were used as sidearms and battlefield weapons for centuries, and would normally have a tsuba and other furnishings traditionally found in Japanese swords (though interestingly enough, they commonly had large spherical or rounded pommels). The reason Sasuke's sword sucks so much is because for some baffling reason, the sword is in Shirasaya. Shirasaya refers to a method of furnishing a blade purely for storage or transport. Shirasaya consists of a seamless, tightly fitted wooden handle and scabbard meant to protect the blade during storage without any of the other furnishings of a proper weapon. Because it was never really intended as a weapon. It was a way to keep valuable blades clean and protected while they weren't going to be in use. The "stick katana" Tyranth was referring to is just a katana with these simple storage furnishings. In the modern day, it's seen as a bit of an aesthetic choice in addition to its historical function, and it appears a lot in pop culture as well but... Historically a sword furnished in that way wasn't intended as a proper weapon.

There's actually historical examples of swords like this, not that design, but it was meant for assassination, not combat

The grasscutter is less ment for direct and elongated confrontation (seen with how he stops using it five seconds into every fight) I believe it's based off the ninjatō the alleged blade used by ninjas in ancient times that has a straight edge, due to the block like shape to them (they traditionally did have a guard) they were ment to be hidden and it did work By usage the blade was ment to be minimalist as it's mebt leds for things like clashing more pure parry, though normally these types of blades were used in more covert assassination Though the sliding is a mild issue and is why the user would need a really strong grip Don't get me wrong the weapon is stull a little crap but it dependant on the context it can work

To answer the question about transportability and concealability when it comes to firearms.People tend to prefer to carry very small semi-automatic magazine fed pistols for concealed carry purposes due to size and comfort. This has multiple issues. It makes it more comfortable to wear, which means you're more likely to wear it on a day-to-day basis. And it is also smaller, so it prints less through your clothing to make it harder for people to see that you're kept carrying. However, when it comes to large firearms due to the immense amounts of regulations and care that must be taken when transporting firearms, they're actually just typically cased in and put away not even in a usable state, so the concealability of it isn't really relevant. However, there are other solutions for larger firearms such as the Kel tec Sub-2000 which is a folding carbine that can fit inside of my backpack and be virtually ready to fire. Both of these are semi-automatic options, however, with multiple rounds in them. There are smaller single-shot firearms that exist, but they're more considered a novelty than any actual use.

On the gun part, My grandpa kept a single shot derringer in the sun glasses compartment of his vehicles for as long as I could remember, in fact if we borrowed any of the vehicles for the day we'd have to check, retrieve, and give him the gun or lock it up in one of the gun safes. So I'd argue that was him daily driving it because of compact portability

This sword is referred to as "grasscutter" which explains it's more minimalist design. It's more farmer's tool than war weapon, which does compliment naruto's ninja theme.

As far as I know, Derringers, those one or two shot small compact pistols meant to fit in a pocket or a woman's small purse, are contemporaries of the revolver as a daily carry. Two shots as opposed to a six shot revolver six makes a lot more sense than if it had to be compared to todays magazine sizes on handguns. Add in that an establishment may make you leave even your gun belt at the door, and suddenly a two shot holdout pistol vs a fist or knife becomes a lot more reasonable.
