I think this is a lock to win Best Makeup at the very least. The fact that it was nominated for Picture and Director at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice (both major ceremonies that occur in the lead up to the Oscars) is an amazing feat in and of itself AND a very good sign for the Oscars. It is also getting recognized by the guilds' awards ceremonies (Eddie Awards etc.) (many guild members vote for the Oscars too), which bodes very well for it.

It's best to go into this knowing that not a single thing in the movie is meant to be taken literally. It's also a good idea to understand that this is primarily a satirical representation of substance abuse and the battle between your high self, and your "normal" self which is being damaged by your addiction and the vicious cycle of self-hatred that ensues.

this movie is really about the self hatred women have for themselves and how we don’t care what we do with our bodies when we’re young. it’s literally the younger version beating the tf out of the old version of themselves. they were never two separate consciousness, they just hated what the other version of themselves represented so much that there was this mental divide. and i know you said that you wished that at the end you wished they had talked and engaged with each other and i can get why you feel that way but in my opinion, that would go more against what the movie is saying. there is no empathy and understanding for each other. that’s the whole point. this movie is literally just self hatred personified and about how it will ruin you and literally suck your life away.

The ability of this movie to make a beautiful naked and nearly naked woman like Margaret Qualley kind of grotesque and horrifying to look at, even before the final act, is one of the most impressive things about it. Like many movies have tried to make a commentary on the male gaze and objectification by satirizing it with cinematography, but they usually only end up accidentally catering to it and objectifying their actresses. Sort of like how anti-war movies are rarely able to make battle look anything but exciting. To actually walk that tightrope successfully is low-key a triumph for the director and cinematographer.

Can we give Demi Moore her flowers for this performance? She exposed herself physically and mentally for this role and looked damn good for a woman who is 61 in real life playing a character who just turned 51! Dennis Quaid also seemed like he was having way too much fun as the over-the-top smarmy network executive producer.

I was so looking forward to your reaction on this movie. I wish you had liked and got more of the message tho. I personally don't think that the ending was all for the spectacle of it. As a woman in today's society, I felt that that moment was necessary to show how, after all we do to try to fit in the beauty pattern society demands from us, sometimes it gets to the point where it says "Nope, got too far. We loathe you now. Why did you do that to yourself?" Just like the voices of the previous actors, during the dancers auditions. I mean, it really touched me when she says "It's still me!" because society can't handle us unless we become what it wants from us. Either way, i enjoyed your critique, specially on the technical points of the movie. Continue the good work.

I absolutely loved the match cut from the box in the locker to the box on her table.

I think that was intentional. It’s implying a fantasy/fable setting. The Sue billboard had no dates on it, she was living next to the studio, there is snow even though it’s psuedo Hollywood, and the film seems anachronistic with 80’s stuff, 90’s stuff, and smartphones.

You do realise the film is a macabre satire on the showtime-girl industry.- hence the exaggerated personalities of those that run it, and those camera shots. It's not really a horror film first, although clearly it uses horror elements. It's more Cronenberg than Kubrick. If you've seen The Fly, (1986) then you'll know why.

To me sue can be seen as an ED. The relationship between Elizabeth and Sue have a lot of similarities to when one has an ED and what that relationship can look like with the ED. Of course comes along with everything surrounding society that doesn’t help the Ed. And ofc the over eating is very obvious. So Sue could be seen more as @norexia. The point of you liking Elizabeth more as she gets “uglier” is on purpose. You’re totally correct that she’s able to voice herself more in that state because she’s not completely consumed with looking good. She’s actually feeling her feelings for the first time, and around a ton of food like that makes sense for ppl with Ed’s. A lot of people talk about how this is about addiction. And Ed’s are 100% an addiction/mental illness. The on/off week makes total sense with recovery. I could go on and on about everything in this film. But for someone who has been in recovery, every minute of this movie is perfect! So glad you watched:)

The actresses did a fantastic job they deserve ALL the praises! The cinematography was great and artsy not just gore and body horror. I understand what you meant in your commentary but if you think about it, it was not meant to have a happy ending or a "profound" bonding between our "characters". In fact this is a journey of self destruction, insecurities & self hatred amplified by the beauty standards and pressure the character faces everyday. The end represents the spiral of madness and kinda reminded me of the stages of grief in a weird way, after she "kills" herself. I agree that maybe it would be better if it slowed down just a bit, but in terms of the progression of storytelling i think it did what it needed to do, having the characters have a "deep conversation" would not make sense in the grand scheme of things and what they wanted to convey.
@luiscalzoncit2820
@luiscalzoncit2820 2 күн бұрын
In my opinion, there wasn't a proper conflict between Elisabeth and Sue once they were both "alive" because there is really just one mind shared between the two. And that mind was in Elisabeth. So the only thing in Sue's head was anger and self-hate. She just grunts and screams and attacks and once Elisabeth is done, there is even an effect of something getting back at Sue and then she looks briefly horrified. I agree there should have been more of a continuous conflict between the two, especially because we know virtually nothing about Elisabeth, but at the same time, I guess she is not meant to be a character, but a commentary. Her feelings matter more than her story. I do agree that the third act was *way* longer than it needed to be.

I agree with this. I think Sue was just Elizabeth's rage in that moment. It wasn't Sue killing Elizabeth, it was Elizabeth killing herself. Throughout the movie, the only reason "Sue" felt that she could take advantage of Elizabeth is because Sue is the personification of Elizabeth's hatred for herself. That's why she wouldn't terminate Sue and said she needed her. She was clinging to some idea of how she should be or how society thought she should be instead of actually caring about and fighting for herself. And in the end, she destroyed herself. She was only at peace when she didn't have a body left.

I'll add that I think the issue isn't that there's too many long films, but that there are too few short ones. Plus, a lot of longer films nowadays don't know how to do 'slow cinema' as well as some old ones. Some modern Japanese filmmakers of course, like Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Ryusuke Hamaguchi are strong exceptions to this rule, and in a way, the same goes for some Korean filmmakers like Park Chan-wook. The films I wanna make will be long, but in my case I don't really have a choice since I wanna do something like Tarkovsky while exploring lots of things, which just naturally makes it take longer.

You say we don't need the flashback element, but I found, more broadly, the aesthetic of the film allows for it and even makes it make sense. There's this heightened reality that makes it feel cringey.

My movie of the year for sure... My jaw was DROPPED during the last act. Unrelated, but you should do a reaction to Twin Peaks if you haven't seen it already! My favourite series of all time 🙏

This movie for me, if they had ended the movie where the mutated creature sees herself, would have been 10/10, the ending lowered it to 8/10. But I understand they wanted to go to the end with the agenda. The more you try to look/ be young the more you feel isolated when alone and the more other people complement you but really dispice you and see you as ”monster”. In the end you just would be/feel better to be the old you without any alterations.

I felt the same way about the cornetto trilogy, but she never mentioned edgar wright as an influence, not even for this film in particular.

I really liked this movie, but I think the ending was too much. I agree with a lot of your take on this one. Personally, my favourite scene in the film - and the one that has stayed with me the most - is the scene of Demi’s character getting ready for her date. Every time she hesitates or doubts her worth felt like a tragedy. You just root so hard for her to open that door and leave.

If one takes this film as literal, I think it becomes disappointing. The beauty is that it's a meditation on female beauty standards and what it makes us do to ourselves. In this respect, I find the beating to death sequence about as sad as you can get; it's a tragic moment, not too far off the feeling I have for The Fly.

I think it's consistent in being ridiculous & over the top. Because it goes crazy on body mutilation and the theme of "wanting to remain young, beautiful and relevant", as well as the body horror, fantasy and the ending. You can't possibly take its message - some see "this is how women are treated in Hollywood", some see "the conflict between your younger self and older self" - very serious, because it shows it so incredibly simplistic and unnuanced - "it's all the fault of the old white men", that it gets comical.
