At first you feel really bad that Harlan died for no reason, but he's so animated in his final moments that you realize this is exactly how he would choose to go. An intricate murder mystery.

This movie has insane rewatchability. There are so many little things like Richard casually handing Marta an empty plate as if she's a servant (when they called her over for their political debate but never let her speak), or each of them saying a different country that Marta is supposedly from, or Walt saying that he noted the time "midnight" when it was Marta who specifically called attention to the time. Or when Benoit and Marta first meet Benoit looks down on her shoe and presumably sees the drop of blood. Just so many little details!

There’s also the brown bottle that Ransom used to burn down the medical examiners office. When Blanc reveals that Ransom had hired him, you see a row of those jugs in the background in the flashback scene. In the earlier scene where Marta is at his house going over the note, the same jugs are in the background, but one is missing.

Also just the fact that he’s named Ransom. Like, prime suspect. There’s also a huge clue dropped when we find out he was his research assistant, hence how he came up with such a convoluted plot - he’s basically an evil Harlan
@DrakengardGirl
@DrakengardGirl Ай бұрын
I always liked the little detail that Ransom is described as very similar to Harlan. Harlan came up with the plot to help Marta hide in a few seconds and commented about how he should write it down for a book, meanwhile Ransom thought up the plot to frame Marta within a couple minutes after he left the party
@liamnehren1054
@liamnehren1054 Ай бұрын
Also that the Author realized the whole plot against him, planned a way out for Martha, but actually knew he wasn't poisoned, he carefully asked her for the symptoms and which he should be feeling and a few of them would have stopped him from even being fully conscious by then. He probably intended for Martha to be caught, not initially but later, hence a plan that led right past his mother who liked looking out the window and wasn't completely batty like the rest of the family believed and that to lead to that she didn't in fact poison him. This leading to the investigation of the missing antidote and who else came back. Benoit Blank was just the cherry on top to make it run smoother. Because a mystery novelist would know exactly how to fool the police and that the culprit would make sure she was caught.

You being on the verge of the solution the whole time shows that its a GOOD mystery movie. It gives you enough clues to get close but has enough subtlety with the rest of the clues that keep you from putting it all together, that’s the detective’s job.

They constantly say that Marta is from a different Latin American country: Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, etc. They don't care or know about the difference between any of those countries. It's just another way of showing they're all ignorant about race, because they're so full of their rich white privilege. Phase 1: You think this is a whodunit, and you're trying to figure out who the killer was. Phase 2: You find out that Marta was accidentally responsible, and now you're hoping she can hide it. Phase 3: You find out she wasn't, and deserves the entire inheritance after all. By the way, Harlan's "I have to save you from people finding out" thing wasn't just about saving her mother from the immigration authorites, it was also about making sure his will was recognized. He needed Marta to be seen as innocent, so that his will could go through and his other family members would be cut off. He's still a sweetheart here, but he also had another motive in saving her.

in my opinion one of the best plot twists there is. It kind of changes the genre of the movie from a whodunnit to more of a thriller if she will get away with it but tells the viewer in a subtle way that not everything is fitting together and in the last act it twists again and reveals it has been a murder mystery all along.

There is such a well done American political allegory that is completely overlooked in the discourse around this film. We have old white elites freaking out over losing control to an immigrant who did the actual work none of them did to inherit. Then there’s Ransom - introduced as an a-hole off the bat, but we and Marta are deceived into thinking he’s enough of a thorn in the side of the elites to be on the side of the working class character, disrupting elite power. But actually he’s the worst of them - he represents the abandoning of the rules they normally play by in order to RETAIN power not actually disrupt it. Who he represents and the political movement he represents becomes self-evident through that lens.

Wow that's a great way of looking at the film, in that sense it kinda shows the extremes (Nazi kid) and the kind (father that pretends to want to take care of her at the start but threatens deporting her mom) all being part of the act to take her down.

Your reaction at the 32 min mark was so spot on! I was dying in the theater the entire time because the dogs gave it away. In the rundown of the timeline, they mention the dogs barking and waking up Meg. The dogs later bark a tiny bit in excitement over Benoit coming up the path and at Linda getting out of the car, but they go nuts on Ransom. So as soon as he's introduced I had to sit on this annoying feeling where I was CERTAIN he was at fault, I just had no idea HOW.

This movie is so good and my favorite part is the part of the film with Benoit Blanc's coin flip: You're right in your reaction, this was a "Who'd-done-it" film, until Marta's questioning moment, Blanc flips the coin and the movie genre changes, now the viewer knows who the culprit is and is watching them try to avoid getting caught, it also alerts the viewer when they come back to the coin landing back in Blanc's hand that the flashback is over. There's so much subversive storytelling in that one moment and I love all of it lol.

The funniest part about Marta's Go strategy is that it's actually a perfectly valid one - there's a YT video where a Go...well, he wouldn't call himself an expert, but it's more that he knows his subject very well, even though he's no major player - where a Go "expert" basically tells about the strategy, which is an actual one, and probably one that Go was designed to accommodate.

If I were Marta I would continue covering Meg's tuition and that's it. Meg was the only one that seemed genuinely kind to Marta and Harlan hadn't expressed disappointment in her in any of the flashbacks (she didn't know her mom was stealing his money). She even looked distraught when she made the phone call to Marta to ask what she was planning to do, most likely pressured into it by her mother and the others.

It is pretty relevant to the discussion of Meg's character that when faced with a tangible consequence of the inheritance (her schooling), she folded and spilled to her family that Marta's mom was undocumented. I think it would be unwise for Marta to trust or support Meg after that. As a person, I think I'm capable of this same kind of selfishness and cowardice, so Meg gave me a lot to think about.
@Hippotigris99
@Hippotigris99 Ай бұрын
@@akordiart I agree that she isn't kind, but I'd say she's the most "redeemable" of the group. In Marta's shoes, I'd probably treat her tuition like a scholarship that could be redacted if her GPA dips or something like that. Meg is young and still has a LOT of growing up to do, but the bones are there for her to work through her spoiled privilege and come out as someone decent. Her area of study is in some sort of social studies, so at the very least she's interested in learning about other people, and she's the only Thromby that willingly hangs out with "the help."
@akordiart
@akordiart Ай бұрын
@@Hippotigris99 she really reminds me of performative activists who only want to *appear* to be on the side of marginalized people but don't actually care about them and still use their privilege for their own benefit. she might even be the worst of her family because at least everyone else is noticeably selfish so you know not to trust them. with meg, you'd fall for her fake kindness and gestures and then get stabbed in the back. also marta isn't and shouldn't be responsible for her tuition or her GPA. if harlan wanted that, he would have written that in his will.

100mg of morphine is a pretty massive dose, especially as an intravenous bolus. Opioids like morphine are respiratory depressants - meaning that they chemically cause you to breathe less until you become hypoxic and hypercapnic and die from oxygen starvation. Yes this is massively oversimplified and not entirely accurate but it's the bare bones of why you need to be very, very, very careful with opioids like morphine and codeine. Naloxone is a rapid treatment for opioid overdose. So much so that ambulances stock it so it can be given almost as soon as they arrive on scene.

A funny fact that i always think of when the movie is brought up is that in the physical DVD version the back of the foil cover is the "Knife-Donut" but if you flip it to the front where all the characters are the hole is on Ransoms Head only. There are even clues outside of the movie but it's still so hard to piece it correctly together. The Perfect Murder Mystery film and one of my favourites overall.

So in Ransom’s plan there would have been a tox screen to determine cause of death. But if it had actually been the accident the swap looked like, Harlan’s suicide would have been the obvious cause of death, and there wouldn’t have been a tox screen. There was only a tox screen despite the obvious cause of death because Ransom got the case reopened by hiring Blanc.

@@nobodyqwertyu that doesn’t contradict what I said. Ransom originally wanted a tox screen because he needed Marta to be found responsible even if accidentally and the slayer rule to apply. Because of Harlan’s suicide there was an obvious cause of death so no tox screen, so his plan wasn’t going to work. So he hired Blanc to get the case reopened so there would be a tox screen and Marta would be held responsible. BUT THEN he found out about the swap and realized the tox screen would show no morphine so he burned down the lab, and got to work framing Marta a different way.

As for James Bond films you got 3 options: You can start with Daniel Craig's Casino Royale, Pierce Brosnan's Goldeneye, or go all the way back to Dr No. with Sean Connery. I vote for Casino Royale and the rest of Craig's run, and then go backwards- it'll be an interesting way to view the series. Quality varies, so if there's a must watch: casino royale and Skyfall. And if I may recommend: get suited up for it and have a martini on the side (or water in a fancy glass. Stay hydrated)

If you haven’t, you should check out the Hercule Poirot movies like murder on the orient express or death on the Nile! They are very much like this one!

Yes, but first and foremost the ones from 1974 and 1978 respectively. Kenneth Branagh's pathetic versions, if at all, can wait.

@@ScaredyKats Well, when I think of Poirot I see Finney, Ustinov and Suchet. I see a quirky eccentric; peacocky at a high rate, yes, but not a wannabe action hero. With Kenneth Branagh you can clearly see that not his character but he is the peacock. Don't get me wrong, Branagh has always been great at adapting Shakespeare plays for the big screen but in my opinion you can't handle Agatha Christie like Shakespeare. He lacks the instincts to do her books justice and to remove his own vanity from the equation. Also he changed the plots for selfish reasons, which I do not appreciate. And why on earth couldn't he shoot on original locations for the budget he had at his disposal and instead switched to cheap-looking CGI?

Honestly Meg feels like the only character not faking the entire movie. The only time shes antagonistic towards Marta is when her entire family made her. Granted, does make her a coward at that moment but hey, still can see she actually cares for Marta

KP....I throroughly enjoyed your reaction and interaction with this film..lol... Like you..Daniel Craig's cajun accent was not only crazily adorable..it quite threw me for a loop when he first started speaking..smh hahaha... Yes a stacked cast to be sure..the beauty is this isn't a one and done...I know there is 2nd..Glass Onion.. and I'm struggling to be sure if there's 3 films for his character Benoit Blanc..or perhaps I'm just thinking of the third..Wake Up Dead Man to be released in 2025...however I feel to date this is the best of the franchise..yet it could be because the shock of Daniel being a Louisiana southerner was the last character we were expecting..French yes with his name but not Cajun..lol... Please please finish the franchise..the existing film(s) and the next release...great reaction !... 🌿🌿🌿

you would freak out with a series death plot that was LITERALLY everyone killed the villain like two of five put poison on her food and drink, one stab her and run, other push her off the stairs and the last one SHOT her. so the police was like “cause of death.. everything?😅”

if you liked this one, i highly recommend you watch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery! It's in the same universe as Knives Out but not really a sequel, so you don't need to have seen Knives Out to understand it!

You’re probably already aware that there’s a sequel, but less well-known is that the same director has done an 8-episode mystery series (each a different mystery, each about an hour or less) called Poker Face, which you might enjoy

IF YOU START WATCHING JAMES BOND FILMS. Just start with the old ones. They are some of the most comfortable films ever. So entertaining, even when outdated. Don't start with the modern ones, you'll get there. Also Daniel Craig, in this film, speaks with what we Americans call a "southern drawl", and I have to say he is captivating in this.

So I saw this video pop up in my recommended and I was going to watch and then realized I hadn’t seen the movie. This mystery is extremely easy to solve as long as you pay attention to two things, the dogs and the old lady. That’s it. Kinda disappointed how easy it was to figure out
CAN I SOLVE the *GLASS ONION* mystery ???
