Essential tremors were taking over Elaine Monn’s life. “I was giving up a lot of things that I enjoyed and cooking. I mean, no slicing, no chopping. I just couldn't do it.”
Neurosurgeon Dr. George Mandybur was an early adopter of a surgical procedure called Deep Brian Stimulation or DBS to treat movement disorders like tremors. “The way it works is it helps remodulate the brain, so the circuit's going bad because of the disease, and the added electricity that we give off with the stimulator kind of counters some of the negative effects of that degenerative process,” said Dr. Mandybur.
Monn was awake for the surgery and remembers the moment they turned it on. I was so excited,” she said. “If I could have jumped off the table I would have, because I thought this is the answer. you know and it was so simple.”
She was the first patient in Florida to receive the new smaller rechargeable battery for DBS. This device lasts for around a decade, and only requires about an hour of charging a month. Adjustments can also be made from anywhere with a WiFi connection. “It couldn't be simpler.” Monn said it’s given her so much of her life back. “I do anything I want now…and I can't wait to do Christmas cards, because I haven't been able to do those in years. I haven't been able to sign my name.”
