for years my accompaniments consisted solely of 1 4 5 1 and a 3 minor and 6minor thrown in. thank you for making these passing chords accessible to a classically trained pianist. i love how you shows us how to slip these into any standard chord change without disrupting the melody or the rhythm.

i think all the / chords are the chosen bass note with an inversion of the chord built from two scale degrees (not sure about terminology) below that bass note. so you just go down two notes inside the scale from the bass note you chose and then take that note as a root for a new chord inside the scale and invert that and put it over the bass note. i don't know, if that was mentioned at all but it became very clear with the last example. great lesson. thank you!

Hey !! Usually most people talks about this type of passing chord using the first inversion and less of how to use the second inversion and applications in context
@0biwan74 жыл бұрын
I watched this video about a month ago but never got the hang of 9th chords and how to fit them into a progression . So I just used a G7/B when going from G to C and moved onto your other numerous great lessons for 7ths and tritones. I was fiddling with a G7/B and turned it into a B diminshed to preserve the 3rd and 7th. It sounded ok but then I remembered you saying that diminished should resolve to a major. So I looked at the chromatic note in the Bdim and bumped the a-flat up to an a-natural for a Bmin7-flat5 and went for a rootless voicing as suggested by another of your lessons which made it Dminor with B bass. It sounded smooth as silk but I had never heard of such a weird looking chord suggested in the key of C. And then it hit me like a ton of bricks: G9 is a Bmin7-flat5 plopped on top of a G root. And so this weird but surprisingly pleasant "Dminor with B bass" that i stumbled into on my way from G to C... just needed a G buried in the middle of the voicing and it became the very G9/B that you recommended but I wasnt able able to make work last month. When I held the chord for a while I could also tell that it would scream to a choir: the transition from verse to refrain is finished... you need to start singing now. I never would have guessed that by ignoring the 9th chords and focusing your lessons on the seventh chords, I was actually taking a roundabout path back to your lesson on 9th chords. Thank you so much for opening up the world of 9th chords to me.

I have discovered an interesting progression. This is not a chord progression--it’s a learning progression. When I was a kid, I learn to play piano from a teacher who simply taught me to read notes. It was boring and I lost interest, and instead found the drums and I could play that by ear. Recently, I discovered Julian Bradley and how to learn to play by ear. Recently that led me via KZbin to you. Due to interesting circumstances, I recently had turned on red KZbin. This allows me to walk my dog while listening to you. This is fantastic because I can visualize the cords and placements even though I’m walking the dog and not looking at your hands. Are you familiar with the work of Richard Feynman? He teaches that you take a complicated subject and talk about it like you’re speaking to a young person who would not ordinarily understand the concepts. I think you teach the piano using the Feynman method.

Can someone explain how to know when you can add extension to your dominant chords, for example. Before going to F @1:06, he did a C7, however he added the #9 and #5. How do I figure out when I can and can't do that? If anyone can help, thank you so much
@thewrestlingpalace99892 жыл бұрын
You kind of have to use your ears and feel it. There is no right or wrong way to use it. Generally, I like to use altered chords when going to minor chords. However; that’s not a hard fast rule. Anytime, you use a dominant chord, you can technically alter it. However, it won’t always sound right. So, it’s all about context and feel. Also, I think that chord only had the #9 (C13#9).

Hi Warren!! I have a question! With these first inversion passing chords, how do you determine the right hand chord? I know the bass moves in stepwise, so that will be close to the destination chord root. However, what is happening in the right hand. When you did C/E, how did you know to play a C major chord. I know the C is just a first inversion, but then, you had Em/G and a G/B, how did you find those right hand chords. Thanks!
@PianoLessonwithWarren2 жыл бұрын
The left hand will always have the 3rd of the chord. So if the left hand plays “E” then the right hand can only be a chord, nothing else.
@thewrestlingpalace99892 жыл бұрын
