First Kayak Fish at Bolsa Chica State Beach 2022

Today’s episode was all about finally making it back out on the water in 2022! This video also features a special guest fisherman, Anthony Esposito @blackflag_fishing! Both Anthony and myself were fishing out of Stealth Kayaks. While the fishing in the waters off of Bolsa Chica State Beach was by no means epic, we both caught fish and got plenty of offshore paddling exercise!

I’ve been surf fishing at Bolsa Chica my whole life, and I never thought to launch my kayak from the shore because I didn’t think there were any fish beyond the surf. I might bring my kayak next time I go to the beach!

Hi Tyler… there’s a whole other world out there with calico and sand bass, thresher sharks, sheepshead, and even the occasional Black Sea bass!🎣😃

Congrats on your first '22 surf launch and avoiding the skunk!! Sure looks like a couple boatloads 😆 of fun. Can't wait to join you two...the container is through the Panama canal and otw to LA, then Oakland. The 525 should be delivered in plenty of time for spring sessions in La Jolla.

Hi Mason…. I have a Navionics Card in my fish finder (Lowrance Hook2 5) and I also have the Navionics App on my iPhone. It’s a little expensive, but definitely worth it.

How do you open your fish hatch without damaging the fish finder?

As long as you don’t throw it open, it’s not a problem. In my case, I have an EVA soft rubber pad that keeps the fish finder from clunking against the fiberglass. Mounting the fish finder on the fish hatch is pretty much standard procedure for all Stealth Installations. Fortunately, the fish finder head units are tough and can handle the abuse. 🎣😃

@@losthorizonfishing107 Thanks for the info! When surf launching, is there any water leaking into where the fish finder is? I can’t seem to figure out how it’s installed. I’ve seen Moomoo outdoors rigging his into the kayak itself which I don’t really want to do. I like how yours is close enough to reach but far enough it doesn’t effect your paddle strokes. I was just concerned about having the fish finder getting damaged when opening the hatch

When I launch in the surf and when I return to the beach, the fish finder, along with all of my fishing gear, is safely stored inside the fish hatch. Even though the fish hatch is not 100 percent water tight, no significant amount of water gets inside the hull, even when the Stealth is flipped upside down for 10 minutes. It’s a really good setup! You definitely want to make sure you’re in a kayak that will be safe and perform well in open ocean. You also want to make sure you have submersible marine radio attached to your PFD. And… you should always have a fishing buddy with you when fishing in open ocean. Another thing that is really important is making that you have practiced re-entering your kayak in deep water. That’s a critical skill that you definitely want to have down before heading out into open water.🎣😃
