Excellent speech. The first lady has done her homework. Her speech has empathy, understanding, and experience of the struggle that blacks (including herself) have had to endure. It is the combination of experience, empathy and understanding that enables Mrs. Obama to critically speak on the issues with respect to her specific audience. That is why it is important to know the true history of your country and not rely on the censored version found in many history books or portrayed throughout the media (radio, television, movies, etc).

But then I thought about where she was giving the speech (a predominant black college) and what Mrs. Obama and her husband have endured while in office. The reality is that racism is well and alive. Having watched portions of the speech by several media talk show hosts, I had to come to my own conclusions about what Mrs. Obama had to say. I'm grateful to her for her honesty and faith-based approach to discussing the difficulties of race relations, as they have developed, in the United States. Mrs. Obama has a great amount courage in speaking this truth about the journey of African Americans through their triumphs and tribulations, but I believe she ultimately, and wisely, gave these graduates the best advice they could receive for life. Yes, the first lady is correct. We should have been just as diligent in voting in 2010, and 2014 as were during the presidential elections because the house and senate was lost to republicans during the mid-term elections and as a result those tea party people voted against President Obama and made him a lame duck president; and we complained about what he wasn't doing, as if we didn't know when we didn't get out the vote in those other elections we did not help the President . We didn't give a lot of money to his campaigns, so the least we could have done was voted, so that he could maintain the power he needed to help us.

A couple thoughts about this speech. 1. White people go through just as much of a struggle graduating from college if there families cant provide the money for it just like aftrican americans. 2. And when i say recent i mean i have been in my professional career for a little over 3 years now. My father was well known in the business world in the area i live in but i wanted to try to get a job on my own. Well after over 100 applications and only 3 interviews with no results I caved and he helped me land 2 internships and then finally the job i am in today. I think the reason so called 'white people' may be a bit confused by her comments is because the racism experience is a largely deeply kept secret at a personal level. Only TV personalities and activists talk about it much. My wife is from Australia and she is what would be considered in America 'white'. My neighbors speak to her and even eat her cooking. She is a stay at home mum. The same neighbors don't speak to me... I am an American with all the trimmings including decorated military service and college graduate. It doesn't matter much to them, I guess I am not 'white' enough. My wife doesn't know it and I have never discussed it with her. There is shame in it, but I am not quite sure where the shame should be placed. If I was graduating from college and looking forward to starting a life (work, housing, etc), her comments would save me a lot of grief and confusion; and make me understand the waters I'll be navigating a bit better. If my neighbors were cops with guns, in a hiring position or real estate agents, I would have some real concerns.

In 2013 young people though it would be fun to "play the knockout game." To my knowledge this was not limited to a particular race but was engaged by thugs who were black and white. There were many totally innocent people seriously injured and several deaths resulting. Do I cross the street when I see a Black" teen in a hoody approaching? Take the descriptor "Black" out of the question and the answer is it depends if I am packing or with someone who is packing. What is most telling is that Michelle previously told the story of how she was asked by a fellow shopper if she would get a shirt for them. When should told the story that time, she said when she told the person she did not work for the store, the patron replied "I didn't think you do but you are so tall that I though I thought you could reach the shirt." She then went on to say how tickled she was to be treated as a useful everyday person. That is a far cry from her victimhood version in this speech. I wonder how many of today's Black youth are aware that way less than 1% of Whites owned slaves in the pre-Civil War South, Whereas nearly 25% of Free Blacks owned Slaves during the same period. And the Republican Party was founded in Ripon Wisconsin for the express purpose to end slavery and nominated as its first candidate for President a Lawyer from Illinois (of all places) named Abe Lincoln. It was Southern Democrats who fought voting Rights, and wanted Jim Crowe Laws. It was Republican President Dwight Eisenhower who Desegregated the Military and passed the first Civil Rights Act. Democrats have tried to rewrite their own history by literally buying the votes of Blacks (and everyone else) with largely unfunded goodies (I'm gonna get me an Obamaphone). Now Republicans have for decades joined in the pork barreling and together Republicans and Democrats have racked up OVER $167 TRILLION (WITH A "T") in UNFUNDED LIABILITIES (WASHINGTON SPEAK FOR WE HAVE NO PLAN TO ACTUALLY DELIVER ON THE UNDERLYING PROMISES). I AGREE WITH ONE THING SHE SAID, "Vote, Vote, Vote," but I SAY ANYBODY BUT DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS.

This is ridiculous! I understand, a lot of things have happened to the black community in America through out history, but this was not the time to bring it up. She should be talking about their achievements, what they're going to do in life! She shouldn't be warning them to look out for the white folks trying to drag them down. This makes me think of a girl I knew who had an opportunity to give encouragement and advice to some students on the day of gradation, and instead she dragged on and on about how her mom left her and how terrible her life was, even though everyone in the room had been told by her several times in the past years. She was so hung up on this wrong doing she couldn't put it aside to encourage the students. There's a time and a place to talk about stuff like this and graduation day is not it. Its a time to look towards are future and not be worried about our past.
