Bernie Taupin was the country boy; Elton John had grown up in the city. Elton was plunging head first into the cocaine-furled life of celebrity, and Bernie felt he was being dragged reluctant along. He wrote this as a way of telling Elton he wanted to split up the partnership. They ended up staying together for several more years, but Elton knew a good lyric when he saw it.

This was 1973.. I remember it well , I was on a bus to a school summer camp in Scotland for a month… it was TOO long and I was so homesick and remember hearing this on the way back home on the school bus and couldn’t wait to see my family again… bittersweet memories of this song but it’s a bit like a time machine, whenever I hear it I’m back there on that bus going home to my family … slight amount of water in my eye right now but still a beautiful song and a beautiful memory 👍

I've been a fan of Elton since high school. I saw him in concert the week this album was released, and he played almost all of it that night. Usually fans aren't as receptive to new and ufamiliar songs, but the audience went crazy over every song. It was kind of magic. The lyrics are a bit unexpexted and somewhat prescient so early in a career. I've seen him another half dozen times over the years, including the Farewell tour. This somewhat reflective, beautiful song always captivates his audiences. I like the interpretations of the lyrics. Check out the video for This Train Don't Stop There Anymore - it captures the Elton essence of that time period. Thanks for the reaction.

Daniel now you are just teasing me. After just reacting to Angelina with her genius arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody on AGT, now you react to the song she covered for her final performance on AGT. If Angelina wasn't so humble, one would think she chose this song since her family refused to sign any contract with Simon. The lyrics, "I didn't sign up with you, I'm not a present for your friends to open". Quite a coincidence though.

I’m not sure of all the meanings to this song but I thought someone who had tasted the limelight wanted to go back to his more simpler life.Bernie wrote it as he always did with this partnership with Elton and Bernie Bernie wrote Elton composed the music and sang it. I wasn’t sure if Bernie was not writing the song to Elton. They wouldn’t ever fight according to both of them. Elton had a variety of addictions. I think he new he couldn’t straighten that out. So the words he always wrote had to go thru eltons head. I can’t say for gospel but the words are preaching go back home. Good bye yellow brick road you can’t trust me in your penthouse. That’s owned by someone wealthy I’m going back to my ploughing. Back home

Bernie wrote this song as he left Elton in the middle of a tour. He couldn't deal with Elton's addictions any longer. It's this that predicated Elton to enter the treatment center. After Elton got out of the center, they got back together, and never skipped a beat.

A genius musical arranger and vocalist who was a bit extravagant teams with a genius lyricist that was thoughtful and introspective. Together they made some of the greatest songs in Rock history. When I first heard Honky Chateau in the early seventies I was blown away. Madman Across the Water, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road...all were very solid records with a lot of memorable songs (with a few hits). Alas, nothing lasts forever. And after the split, Elton still had hits but they didn't have the lyrical depth of the earlier songs with Bernie. Of course, this may have been due to changing musical tastes of the mid to late seventies. Disco and punk were just around the corner.

That was the entire song. One of the most beautiful ballads of the 1970s -- a decade full of gorgeous music. Drummer Nigel Olsson, guitarist Davey Johnstone and the late bassist Dee Murray, used to go off after each song was recorded, and they would work out the backing harmonies on their own, while Elton and producer Gus Dudgeon did something else. These three sidemen created the most hauntingly beautiful backing vocals of any band ever, IMO. I wish somebody would release their harmonies as a series of samples, to be employed in new ways for modern music.

One Mona Lisa is worth untold Millions. If others were found the price would probably drop. Example on "The Antiques Roadshow" in the UK, a lady came in with one poster and the expert said this is worth x amount, then she revealed she had at least 40 other posters in her attic collection and he said oh in that case this poster is only worth a fraction since now the rarity value has gone for a burton. Gone for a Burton is a British English expression meaning to be missing or to die. The term was popularised by the RAF around the time of World War II.[1] It migrated to the USA quickly and in June 1943 a story titled Husky Goes Down for a Burton appeared in Boys' Life, the magazine of the Boy Scouts of America.[2] The etymology is disputed.

it makes sense that this conspiracy about the planes being taken down exists (and I also never heard about) during a time where a lot of artists died from plane crashes (Otis Redding and the group Bar-Kays, Jim Croce, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, Lynyrd Skynyrd members, Chase), so it kinda makes sense that people would think there was a conspiracy behind it (which I don't believe personally, but I see why others would)

The "I'm going back to my plow" line always made me think of Cincinnatus, who served as Dictator for Rome when appointed, but then once he had subjugated the uprising of the poor (Roman politics is frustrating sometimes) he went back to his farm and relinquished his absolute authority. In fact, I think Livy explicitly says he "returned to his plow."

Bernie writes tge lyrics and I see all as him talking to Elton. Elton is in the penthouse and Bernie wants to go back to the farm. Forget all the managers etc. Elton was an alcoholic and addict. I didn't sign up for you is about how both Bernie and Elton tried to win a music contest but both lost. One of the people in charge said they should work together as Bernie had great words and Elton was the better performer. So they were paired up and didn't actually seek each other out, or that the Elton he first met was not the flamboyant superstar he became. Two years later they released the album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. You can see Elton's Captain Fantastic and Bernie's Brown Dirt Cowboy in these lyrics.

I never heard that it could be about the singer/songwriter relationship before. This seems to be too early in their career together for that? They were an incredible duo. Good news too about the new album.

I haven't played this album in at least a decade but still remember all the words to it, I practically memorized it growing up. The songwriting team was the perfect pairing, Bernie's insightful lyrics with Elton's unforgettable tunes and voice. Separately they're aren't quite as good (although give "From the Inside" a listen, Bernie co-wrote it with Alice Cooper, top 10 album for me). I don't believe a record company would kill the golden goose for a quick cash-in but they aren't above doing a band-ectomy to get control of the lead singer. That was done with Janis Joplin when she left Big Brother & the Holding Company. Also they aren't above exploiting a dead artist, Jimi Hendrix released new albums in 2019 and 2020 and he's been dead more than 50 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix_posthumous_discography
