The guy with the beard makes the whoosh noise (Avi). The black guy (Kevin) makes the drum sounds. The girl is Kirstie the main singer with black hair is Mitch and the blond guy is Scott. The couch represents their KZbin videos that they filmed on their couch that got them prominence. They have had world tours. They won the Sing off. It also represents that their couch took them to the stars and beyond but in the end they are still the same people on the couch. They use no instruments except Kevin occasionally plays a cello

The chords prove there is no autotune. They would sound flat and dead if autotune were used. All 5 members of Pentatonix tune to a 64th of a tone, and it is that tuning that brings the chords to life. Close harmony demands that level of talent to make the sound ring.

"They've done some Christmas music, probably," is an understatement. They made so much Christmas music they actually made a video making fun of themselves for it :D. I always laugh when people just assume they have actual drums under it. It's really an evidence of how uncredible Kevin is. I know nothing about beatboxing, but I've seen some people who actually know how to do it commenting how incredibly difficult some of the sounds he makes are, specifically to make it sound authentic. And the craziest thing is, that he does it live. They all do, but with Kevin specifically, it's so hard to believe it's actually a person making these noises that you just expect it to sound different live. It doesn't. He's a beast. I really love Pentatonix. They've been around for almost a decade now (only one member, the bass, changed in that time) and they just don't slack off and always deliver a 100%. I obviously admire their musicality and their vocal abilities, but the more I know about them, the more I just appreciate all they put into their music and how hard they work. It's always one thing that makes me appreciate a musician or an actor or other people so much more, when I see dedication and work ethic and joy (in the sense of genuinly loveing what you're doing) behind what their work and Pentatonix are a group that has all of that. Thank you so much for putting out this reaction. I always appreciate reactors that clearly try to understand and dig deeper into what they're listening to. I would recommend you listen to one of their Evolution videos (my favorite one is Evolution of Rihanna). Those are made as live one-takes with overhead microphones for the trio (Mitch - megaphone man, Scott - tall, blond dude, and Kirstin - the lady) and you can also see all of them on the screen the whole time, so it's easier to tell what they're doing.

It was pretty darn cold too that’s why you can see their breath. Oh by the way the megaphone is just Eye candy for the video Mitch doesn’t need it to say that guitar part.

Pentatonix is an amazing a capella group that has been together since 2011. They've won 3 Grammys and have changed one band member (Avi Kaplan - bass with the beard) in 2017 and Matt Sallee (new bass) joined. Yes it's all their voices (even the drum beat). Kevin Olusola (resident beatboxer) is a genius with a Yale degree who invented celloboxing (beatboxing while playing the cello). The odd time PTX will add this to some of their videos. Other than that no instruments. Scott Hoying (tall blond), Kirstie Maldinado (the lovely lady member) and Mitch Grassi (main singer with killer high vocals) were high school friends. Scott wanted to join a show called the Sing Off and asked them to join as well. He was introduced to Avi through a friend and found Kevin celloboxing on KZbin. They got together a week before the show and won (you should definitely check out their journey). After the show the record label (part of the win) dropped them almost instantly so they took to KZbin. 18.1 million subscribers (and 3 Grammys) later they are world renowned. Their crazy loyal fans are dubbed Pentaholics. They're very good at creating great videos on low budgets. Bohemian Rhapsody was filmed on a couch (on remote control wheels or something like that) in the middle of a quiet street, in the middle of the night. You should react to their Daft Punk Medley (1st Grammy win). This was filmed in Kevin and Avi's (who were roommates at the time) kitchen and recorded in a closet on a $400 budget. Also please react to their cover of Can't Hold Us and their cover of Aha! Live at the Star Vista Singapore to get a sense of what they sound like for real (trust me you'll be blown away). Welcome!

First of all, welcome to Pentatonix, us fans call ourselves pentaholics and if you continue to react to them you’ll very soon realize that we’re all addicted to watching reaction videos of them. They are an acapela group that occasionally will add some instruments to their performance...when this happens... you’ll see the instrument on video... and so it’s not the case for this video, this cover is done ENTIRELY acapela. Scott, the blonde guy, is the baritone and does the sickest runs you’ll ever here. Mitch, aka, the chameleon (he will most likely look dif in every video you see him in), is a true tenor, and the lead of this cover. Kirstin/Kirsty (sounds like thirsty), is the only girl in the group and can very her singing from low to high notes, (she also changes her looks a lot). Kevin, K.O. is the human sound machine, he’s really the overachiever of the group, went to Yale, lived in China for a while, can speak multiple languages fluently, plays the cello, can beatbox, can cello box...he does ALL of the drum sounds in this. And last but certainly not least, you’ve got Avi who was the amazing smooth bass of the group who unfortunately had to leave the group a couple of years ago, there was no beef between them, he had some family stuff he needed to be present for and with the amount of touring these guys did, he couldn’t keep up. He also helped them find their current bass, Matt, you can see him in more recent covers like “new rules x are you that somebody” or “the sound of silence”, he’s also a really amazing bass and a great addition. So like I said, there are no drum effects added and they don’t use auto tune on anything. Here’s them performing this live. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5iQcomQaM2mfas The only dif between this live performance and the official soundtrack is the professional recording, the cool left to right voices on the headset and the proper balanced mic volumes, for example, Scott sings a lot of backing vocals in the begging of the song but he also has a solo at the end, so on the live perf his mic has to be set at a high volume the entire performance and you can distinctly hear his backing vocals at the beginning. Other than that, it’s just their voices and amazing talent. I suggest checking out “can’t hold us”, “love again”, any of their “evolution of.....”, “rather be”, “I need your love”, “cheerleader”. And if you still have a hard time believing it’s just them, feel free to check out some live performances of these same songs. They never record something they can’t perform live. Congrats if you’ve read all of this 😂☺️

No drums. That was their beatboxer. All done by voice and occasionally clapping hands or slapping his chest. The video was done in a parking lot somewhere around L.A. late at night. Probably the most expensive part was turning the couch into a motorized vehicle. There is also a behind-the-scenes video showing how it was made. PTX is an amazing group. You will soon discover that they don't use studio effects or autotune. They tour pretty much constantly (unless they get sidelined by worldwide pandemics) and if you look for any of the fan-videos of this song, you will see that they create their studio recordings in a way that allows them to reproduce the same sounds live onstage.

You're probably going to get a lot of comments on this. Pentatonix fans usually love to see reactions on Pentatonix videos, partly, I suspect, to the dawning of understanding that the group is usually without instruments. A lot of people don't know about them, since they are acapella. When I say usually, they've worked with Lindsey Stirling (a violinist) and Kevin, the primary beatboxer is a very talented cellist. All of them take parts so at one time Scott (The front man usually) will sometimes do fill-noise as bass while Avi, the bass, (or Matt since 2017 or so) sings. Edit: Mitch is the lead singer in this song, Kirstin is the female. Lead singing duties is actually shared a lot. And you may want to check out Pentatonix cover of Bernard Cohen's , or their cover of John Lennon's . I did appreciate your reaction, especially when you started to enjoy it.

I have seen Queen and Adam Lambert do this, neither them nor when Freddie was alive did they ever recreated the choir part of the sing live. I've also seen Pentatonix do this live more than once and well, they do it! Mitch, the lead singer doesn't need the megaphone live, he can just make his voice sound like that. By the way, Kevin the beatboxer is the drum machine!! Pentatonix has been around since 2011 and they are the only A Capella group to have won Grammys (3 so far). Their last US tour was an arena tour. Back in 2012 they won a competition where they were supposed to get a record contract. The small record company changed management so they were dropped about 3 weeks after winning. So, they had moved to LA and found themselves with no record contract. They started putting videos on KZbin filmed with an iPad without proper mics and sitting on one of their couches. The couch in the video is nostalgic for them and for the fans who have been there since the beginning!

They've been around for most of ten years, and the three main singers, Kristin, Mitch and Scott, have been friends singing together since high school. They picked up Avi (basso profundo) and Kevin (beatbox and tenor) to compete in the 'Sing Off' show, which they won. Sony dropped them from the recording contract they won, think there was no future for a totally acapella group, so they started recording and selling their own CDs - that's the reference to the couch in this video. When Mozart said that the human voice was the ultimate musical instrument, he had exactly folks like this in mind. Every sound in this video is from human voices, even the megaphone Mitch uses as a prop - they sound exactly the same live.

The couch - represents how they used to just film their videos for KZbin, which is how they grew their fanbase...then they went off into the stratosphere once they got well known, won 3 grammy's, but then always come back to the closeness and remaining grounded like where they started - the three on the couch towards the end are the 'Trio' , who knew each other from being really young and performed in an acapella choral group in highschool. The tall blonde (Scott) wanted to go on a singing show called The Sing Off in 2011 but they needed more members...so they knew of Avi (the bassist) and found Kevin (Celloboxer) on youtube. Then at the end all five were on the couch together. They won the show, won some money and a record deal...record label dropped them straight after the show because apparently 'acapella music will never be accepted by mainstream music lovers'...so they went back to 'the couch' to put out their own versions of covers and original music...the rest is history and here we are !!

I enjoyed your reaction! I liked that you had already watched the original, looked at comments, did a quick search....you fit a lot into a decently-timed video. Now I have to go back and watch your Queen video :-) PTX is a unique group - super talented and very hard-working, they made it on KZbin after being dropped from the record contract they won on the Sing Off, an a capella contest show. They do originals as well as covers, though most of what you saw posted was covers. They also do Evolutions - live one-shots - of artists they admire ("Evolution of Michael Jackson" seems to be the most popular). They do have a number of Christmas albums out, "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" was one of their Grammy-winners, visually stunning video but the award was for the arrangement. Their most-watched video is for "Hallelujah" with over 500 million views, and though it's not really a Christmas song, it was included on "A Pentatonix Christmas". Another arrangement they got a Grammy for was their "Daft Punk" medley - another "artsy" video they did on a $400 budget. Their mashups are legend - these folks are real musicians - my favorite is "La La Latch". They individually have a wide variety of influences, so there is a lot of diversity in the music they choose. Thanks for taking at a look at my favorite group - hoping to see you do more :-)

These singers are amazing I am glad you reacted to them. They use NO instruments other than their voices, the voices are their instruments. They do use hands, etc. I was actually going to remind you of how skeptical you were that Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) could even be considered in the same context as Stairway To Heaven. I remember thinking...just hang on to your hat buddy, you are about to be blown away. I love both songs and Hotel California, which is also another song that defies definition. All also great songs. I have heard lots of songs by Pentatonix, each one is excellent. The fact that they used simple effects, etc., is a nod to Queen also, since for the first few albums, QUEEN refused to use synth and used everything you can imagine to get their sounds. Thank you, another great reaction.

I came because I'm a Pentaholic and I love to watch new first-time reactors discover Pentatonix. I subscribed, though, because I like your style. You kept the video to a reasonable length, you weren't too proud (or lazy) to do a little onscreen research, and your comments have substance, not just "Oh, they're so talented!" I've never, ever seen a reactor check out the comments on the original video. I was hoping SO much that someone would comment on the beatboxing, and that you would do a double take and go back to the video to try to spot the beatboxer!

would love for you to react to more of them, but, from the comments, it looks like a lot of your subs didn't like the group...which totally boggles my mind, but, to each their own, I guess. if you do react to PTX again, I highly recommend Hallelujah, Sound of Silence, Daft Punk, Gold, Imagine, Evolution of Michael Jackson...but everything they do is amazing. :)

Welcome to the world of the pentaholics. If you really want a mind-blowing journey, look at three videos. Their first Grammy was the Daft Punk medley, shot in Avi's kitchen for about $400. The second was from a Christmas album, where they did the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies. Their third was Jolene (with Dolly Parton). The variety of their repertoire is beyond incredible.

They were walking down a street. They had rented it one night from 10PM to 6AM and were rushing to finish before sunrise. It was chilly and a few times you could see their breath. The megaphone was only a prop. He can reproduce the sound in live concerts without it. There are two background videos to go with this. One is a "The Making of..." video and the other is a split screen of them and the original Queen version simultaneously. I think the most they're ever off is about a quarter beat. Once, towards the end.

Pentatonix has a huge huge list of songs. Its a journey for your ears. There rendition of "Hallelujah" has over 550 million views. There rendition of "Sound of Silence" is just fantastic. They did a medley of Daft Punk songs (5 or 6 songs all in one) and it won them a Grammy Award. (only cost them around $400 to make the video). Keep reacting to Pentatonix and all the "Pentaholics" will woosh in and spike your view count.

It is ALL them, they do this Live as well: Autotune is not in their vocabulary. How they filmed this is shown in their behind the scenes video, just search Pentatonix behind the scenes "Bohemian Rhapsody" When they do this live, Mitch doesn't even use the megaphone. The couch is a symbol of their KZbin journey because a couch is where they usually sat and recorded most of the videos that got them noticed. By all means check out more of their videos...There are many more that Includes a singing competition on NBC in 2011 titled the "Sing-off" which they won.

From a technical standpoint, the beatboxing is pretty basic, though Kevin Olusola is truly amazing in his talent. There are other beat boxers in the world that are unbelievable in their talent but do NOT have the variety of sounds that Kevin produces. He also sings, plays various instruments like cello and saxophone and speaks fluent Chinese.

I have always been astounded by their incredible , clean pristine voices.. Certainly no Freddie Mercury...but I do believe Freddie would highly approve of such a flattering rendition. by the way the drum beat is a beat-box done by mouth also , with the help of a little post production effect. And Yes you were absolutely right ..Stairway to Heaven is legendary and Bohemian Rhapsody is equally legendary. Both I believe hold the record of most played song in History , maybe next to Church Hymns like Amazing Grace. If you like this you gotta hear them do " hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen .

Have you seriously never heard of beatboxing? EVERY sound you heard came only from them. No autotune, no drums, no sound effects, just them. Live version sounds the same. As to recommendations...anything they do is pretty amazing. Their cover of the Sound of Silence is a nice one but, my personal favorite and highly underrated imho, is their cover of Can't Hold Us.

Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. The scene in which they're looking up at the night sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites . There are 4 shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. After Sony drop them they did their own videos and uploaded them to KZbin. They would just be sitting on a couch with a camera aimed at them. I think they did them all in one take because they didn't have money for post-production or editing..

Filmed on a real street, complete with asphalt repairs, white lines and reflectors on the pavement. Also, note the fences and trees in the background as seen in some scenes as well as the condensation from their breaths when they sing (or sing over the soundtrack) early on in the video. Musta been a cold morning based on their clothes. I'd love to see the outtakes, especialy with the rolling sofa.
