This is from their debut album featuring John Rutsey on drums. A year later they had their new drummer and lyricist Neil Pert and began to evolve their music quickly. There is still some things to enjoy from this album.

Neil Peart replaced John Rutsey, the original drummer of Rush and was always comically referred to as the New Guy. Was generally considered to be one of the greatest drummers of all time. He was also a great lyricist and wrote several books. His life was touched by tragedy when his 19 yr. old daughter was killed in an automobile crash and 10 months later his wife died of cancer. After this he took a sabbatical from the band and traveled unrecognized throughout North and Central America on his motorcycle, covering 55,000 miles. He wrote a book chronicling the journey. Eventually he returned to rejoin the band and they continued to record and tour. He died from brain cancer on January 7, 2020. Easily one of the most talented and interesting musicians of all time. There is a great documentary of Rush that covers all this in addition to the history of the band.

The guys weren’t that much older than you when they wrote this song - about 19 in 1972/73 and recorded it in 1973. It’s about guitarist Alex Lifeson’s dad who would work 2 & 3 jobs to support his family. Getting home at 5 for him may well have been 5am. It was discovered by Donna Halper, a Cleveland WMMS DJ in April/May 1974. They got their US contract, Rutsey was replaced with Peart, and they hit the stage across the US. They wrote their second album, Fly by Night, on the road in late 1974, with Peart progressively taking over as lyricist. The rest is history. RIP Professor.

Some people have said that if Jon Anderson from Yes sang a little raunchier he'd sound like Geddy Lee. Interesting bit here: When Yes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, during their performance Geddy Lee played bass for Chris Squire who passed away in 2015.

Welcome to Rush. I'll let everyone else correct you about Neil. The band never hid the fact that their heros were Cream, Zeppelin, Yardbirds and The Who. This track is Zeppelinesque, it's what grabbed people in 1974 and got Rush noticed , and a record deal. It might be interesting to go through their catalog chronologically, perhaps a track from each album in turn. In which case I'd recommend By Tor and The Snowdog from the second album. Neil's debut album with the band.

Hey, Daniel. Another Daniel here! 😁 I, too, was 16, a young Canadian high school lad, when I first heard this. The difference being: The album this song is on, Rush's debut album, had just been released. (Side note: Neil Peart wasn't the drummer when this album was recorded, but he did learn all their material in two weeks for the tour to support the album). It was 1974, and I had NO idea of the multi-decade galaxy-spanning extra-dimensional ship I had just boarded. And I'm sure glad I did! Should you continue on: enjoy, young fella! You're in for one HELLUVA ride! 🤟

Every time I hear Rush with Geddy Lee singing, I am reminded of my mom, who discovered his voice when he sang the national anthem for Canada at the Major League All Star Game in 1993. She was 52 then, a rocker who loved male singers voices. You can't go wrong with Rush and a reaction. The video is on youtube, and is still a good listen in total acapella.

As Buddy noted in his comment a year ago, Working Man provided Rush with its first entree into a major U.S. media market. That airplay led to a recording contract which led to a U.S. tour, which led to the departure of original drummer, John Rutsey. The replacement, forever teased as the “new guy” was Neil Peart, sought out for an audition by Rush’s then teenage manager (who continues to hold that role even today). As Alex Lifeson has explained in interviews, Rutsey was more into straight forward rock, such as Bad Company. Alex and Geddy were interested in moving in a more progressive direction. Peart was of the same mind and everything clicked from there. The point of this story is to strongly suggest to you that you react to Rush’s live version of Working Man, performed in Cleveland a few decades later, as the last encore for one of their last concerts there, on the Time Machine Tour.

Awesome reaction, i just joined your channel. This particular year "1974" was an awesome year, many new bands were formed like Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Scorpions, Triumph, AC/DC, April Wine to name a few of the best in the industry. So many great guitarist were around those times but one for me who stood out over all of them was a young German guitarist who started his career with Scorpions then went off to UFO, and started his own band in 1980 "MSG" The Michael Schenker Group. This dude was one of the greats that hardly got any recognition "Michael Schenker".

This was RUSH's first album, and a bit raw and 'Zeppelinesque'. It's good, but nothing near or like the epic, progressive sounds they achieved from the next album on, with their new drummer and lyricist, the inimitable Neil Peart. But it did get them on the map, when Donna Halper, a Cleveland FM DJ, got them airplay and noticed in major markets. If you're going to go down the Rush rabbit hole (and you MUST, LOL), check these music and lyrical bangers out: 'Spirit Of Radio', 'Freewill', 'Natural Science', 'Subdivisions', 'Distant Early Warning', 'Between The Wheels', 'Dreamline', 'Roll The Bones', 'The Pass', 'Nobodys Hero', 'Far Cry', 'Xanadu'... oh HELL, there are SO MANY phenomenal RUSH songs... this is just a start! You will have a blast with reacting to RUSH's catalog! I'm pushing 59, and have seen them 63 times live, in 6 states, over the decades. I first saw them at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ for the '2112' tour, and I never looked back. I knew even back then, that I would be 'hooked for life', and that they would be one of my favorite bands of all time. Cheers!

As Geddy 1888 says below, the live version from Time Machine is wonderful and shows middle-aged rockers can still rock. Worth a look, and it displays the powerful reggae influence of The Police. I also recommend the Live In Rio version of YYZ, the Exit Stage Left version of La Villa Strangiatto, The Spirit of Radio with the cartoon video, and the live (official?) version of Xanadu. For more recent fare, the very touching live version of The Garden and also Leave That Thing Alone. So many good songs to check out.

In the Rush documentary Beyond the lighted stage, one DJ that played working man very early on recounted how after the song was played, people were calling the station to ask about the new Led Zepplin album. RUSH found some success in Toronto, but really found the true success in Cleveland OHIO, where the city adopted this song because of the hard workers of the time. As RUSH grew up as a band they just became alone in the music world as a Different type of music called Progressive Rock. In recent times even though John Rutsey played originally he was replaced by Neil Peart, who sadly lost his wife (to cancer 10 months after the death of their daughter) and daughter- ( Killed in a car crash in 1997) a little while back and then we lost Neil to Brain Cancer on January 7th, 2020. Is the working man complaining about his life or merely describing his life? In defense of the working class, a person can do a lot worse than having a job and a place to live. We've scratched out a living in spite of the circumstances in which we were born. Since the Great Recession of 2008, the top 9% of earners have seen their wealth increase some 25% while everyone else has seen their wealth fall 4%. When income inequality is sorted out, the working class won't be looked down on with pity.

giggles...Ja, of course RUSH was influenced by other popular Rock bands. Of course RUSH created their own unique style...Most every popular Rock band during that era did that. This ist why that era of music ist sooo worthy und loved. :-) Most Rock bands then exhibited musical composition from every music genre, used most every musical instrument, und every playing technique. They didn't limit themselves to the limitations of Blues music any longer...They left that far behind, as well later they had no inspirations to use faked synthesized music, und no voice enhancement,...only their own Rock music passion. Even the guitar solos had more passion than "most" of today's Rock music, und there ist NO comparison to current Pop music that ist quite faked music und singing, exhibiting NO passion for music, but only considers record sales.
