Stevie Wonder is a genius. plain and simple. One of the greatest singer-keyboardist-songwriters of all time. He pioneered that funky/jazzy R&B sound that influenced countless others, much like steely dan. Also a tremendous influence as a vocalist - those ad libs! The staggering run of albums from 'Music of my Mind' to 'Songs in the Key of Life' is essential listening.

One of our greatest singer/songwriter geniuses. Stevie’s first hit was at 12 years older- called “ Fingertips” because oof his virtuosic harmonica playing. Songs In the Key of Life albums are his pinnacle. He spearheaded the effort to make MLK’s birthday a national holiday and wrote his own iconic birthday song for Martin. My favorite song of his is “ As”.

The Sesame Street performance is absolutely EPIC!! Steve & Co. are just grooving the whole time, and so are the kids on the show! He definitely didn't 'phone in' the performance. I highly recommend watching it! The clavinet & drum groove is what always got me with this track, then the horns kick in - WOW! Great reaction.

There have been many blind musicians, including Ray Charles and George Shearing. Henry Butler, a pianist from New Orleans, was blind. There's a rich history of blind blues musicians like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Boy Fuller, and Sonny Terry. Blind Blake is often listed as a blues guitarist, but he was more of a ragtime musician. Art Tatum was nearly blind. I'm not sure whether you caught this, but Stevie Wonder had his first hit record (Fingertips) at the age of 13. That's why they called him "Little Stevie Wonder." Stevie Wonder has a big catalog of great songs. One of my favorites is Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing. Maybe you could react to this one.

But the bass here is not a bass guitar, it's Stevie on a moog synthesizer. Stevie is playing the drums. As someone alluded to, the guitar-like sound is Stevie playing a keyboard instrument called a clavinet (which other artists have used). Clavinet videos are found on KZbin. Very different hard (?) sound compared to a piano. He also puts an echo on some of the clav parts. Maybe It makes it more resemble electric guitar. Stevie can also play harmonica incredibly well! Nice! Glad you are adding some 70s Soul into your reactions my friend! Diversity is the beauty of that 70s music. Between the Rock and Soul of the 70s along with the other genres, even pop songs were incredible compositions when broken down. Stevie's run of albums from 1972-76 was some of the finest run of albums to come out of that era. So anything that you do from that period is golden. Stevie also started out as a child prodigy at age 12, and by 20 he was creating masterful work on his own. Your dad is right on track to suggest this as a starter. I recommend anything off of "Innervisions" for next. Keep up the great work here.

A song probably only known to those who bought his albums, is Ordinary Pain. First there is Stevie singing about Ordinary Pain in the first part, and then a gal -- wups! edit--I erased my description so as not to give it away. Shirley Brewer does such a good job! "Knocks it out the park." Stevie is such a fun writer to come up with that. It's one the two of them do on some of his concert tours. But I haven't come across a live version with good audio.

Without checking, I'd bet that Stevie played all the instruments and vocal on this track except for the horns. He did this a lot, all on keyboards. He was an early innovator on synthesizers. When you hear a pretty basic drum part like this Stevie likely did that, also.

Stevie would often write and record an instrumental track, then later fill the wotds and such later. This is clear in the song Tears of a Clown sung by Smokey Robinson. Stevie reconded an instrumental track and weeks later Smokey wrote and sang the words and rest was finished in studio.

We've mentioned another blind artist, Jose Feliciano. He covered The Doors' "Light My Fire" in the manner that Robby Krieger originally intended. Jose plays guitar.

He started out as Little Stevie Wonder in the 60's when he like 11, 12, years old, something like that and eventually dropped the little when he grew up. He was a harmonica player as a child and teen. You should check our Finger Tips one of his first.
