I adore the Smiths.....and it's so lonely on a limb. I actually would have recommended "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" "Shoplifters of the World Unite," "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" or "William It Was Really Nothing" as a first listen, but this is a good track. I really hope you will explore this band further. Morrisey is the epitome of frustration and angst.

Wow. I love the Smiths, but the title track from "The Queen Is Dead" isn't what I would have gone for as a first choice -- I would have pushed "How Soon Is Now?" as a first Smiths song. My favorite Smiths song is on that album, though.

In a separate post I recommended _Louder Than Bombs_ as a good "survey" of the Smiths' music (even though it doesn't have many of my favorites like "Cemetry Gates" or "The Headmaster Ritual"). But I struggled with suggesting _Hatful of Hollow_ instead, even though it's much shorter and misses a lot of stuff on _Louder Than Bombs_ , precisely because it *does* have "This Charming Man" and "How Soon Is Now". Really, the only appropriate thing to do is listen to everything. But recommending that to a newcomer would be kind of a dick move. :)

I agree this was an interesting choice for first reaction but I think How Soon is Now would have been worse. It’s completely personal but that song just doesn’t do it for me. It’s a great song but isn’t anymore representative of The Smiths than this song was. This Charming Man or Still Ill or Big Mouth would have been better choices (to me). But hey he dug this so I guarantee anything else he hears he will love. Maybe not the song Meat is Murder but anything else.

One more about the Smiths. If you start listening to them on your own time, the strangely enough, the first place I'd steer you is _Louder Than Bombs_ , a compilation of mostly non-album singles. It's a ton of music on one album and does a fantastic job of surveying their music. The Smiths were really big on non-album singles.

To add another layer of complexity (according to Wikipedia) the title of the song is taken from the title of one of the parts of the novel Last Exit to Brooklyn (never read the book but saw the movie several years ago and I'm still recovering). Good luck with holding off listening further to the Smiths but I will mention that the album was voted best album of all time by British music rag NME back in 2013 so it's begging for a listen of the whole album (either on your own or in an extended video...)!!!

TY Daniel, an excellent reaction. I'd recommend "Barbarism Begins at Home" for more like this from the same album, "Well I Wonder" for a more ethereal Smiths and "Handsome Devil" for raw, driving 'rock-band' Smiths. For a short lived band they have a prolific set of albums, 12", B sides, anthologies and whatnots to explore. For ex the sprawling "Hatful of Hollow" a collection of Peel sessions, B-sides and different versions of prev tunes. Amazing.

My favorite Smiths album is the previous one, Meat is Murder, with "Barbarism begins at Home" and the wonderful "How Soon is Now?" But I have a soft spot for the first Smiths song I ever heard, "What Difference Does it Make", from their first album, sent from a friend to me on a cassette tape when I was living in Asia. In the last century, chemical castration was also the punishment for homosexuality in England as an alternative to jail time. "The Queen is Dead" is only one end of the spectrum of the Smith's music. Something like "Ask" is towards the other more pop like end. One song I don't think gets enough love is "Unhappy Birthday" off of "Strangeways Here We Come". "Headmaster Ritual" is another off "Meat is Murder". It is probably one of the closest to "The Queen is Dead".

This is the title track from their 3rd album, often considered their best one. The references could all be true, Morrissey is very literary and a film buff as well. His lyrics are frequently ambiguous leaving it up to the listener to find their own meaning. I only discovered them a few years ago but quickly wanted to hear every song. I read "A Light That Never Goes Out" by Tony Fletcher and more importantly "Songs That Saved Your Life: The Art of The Smiths 1982-87" which details each song in chronological order as well as the band's history as it goes along. Recommended songs: 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', 'Girlfriend in a Coma', 'Asleep', 'I Know It's Over' and 'Ask'. Many will tell you 'How Soon Is Now' but it's their most overplayed song, it was the theme for the "Charmed" TV show, recorded by Psychedelic Furs splinter group Love Spit Love.

Went straight for the heavy with The Smiths, huh? Like you heard - awesome song, but that was a bit like listening to "Close to the Edge" as your first Yes song. I would have said go for a great, and more typical song of theirs, "What Difference Does it Make", first. That has one of my favorite Johnny Marr guitar lines. Then there is there less typical but huge hit "How Soon is Now", heard on every New Wave club dance floor in the mid-80's. Great reaction, thanks... but I can't believe this is your first time with The Smiths, you're going to love them! You could actually do worse than go track-by-track through the whole TQID album (their best IMHO), but be warned this track is *slightly* atypical (more aggressive) compared to the rest of their output, which is one of the most tightest and consistent in the canon, a great-but-brief selection of albums, non-album singles and B-sides with barely a duffer in the bunch... in fact, their mop-up odds-and-sods collections "Hatful Of Hollow" and "Louder Than Bombs" are better than most albums by anyone else... really looking forward to more Smiths reactions from you! PS I maintain the line, "Eh, I know you and you cannot sing, I said 'That's nothing, you should hear me play piano!'", is one of the funniest in rock music...

Oh wow. in 1990, a friend gave me an audio tape with alot of their best songs. Its not something that I gelled immediately with but it definitely grew on me. Morissey was not really the best singer but I could tell these songs really meant alot to not just stupid pop songs.

Great reaction, Daniel! You're getting a lot of comments about "better" or "more representative" Smiths songs, but with Morrissey's lyrics and singing style and Johnny Marr's guitar work (as you noted) both being driven by Andy Rourke's bass and Mike Joyce's drums, this is about as Smiths as it gets. It's more musically aggressive than a lot of their songs, especially their singles, but it's It's also a great opening track to a great album. If I were you I'd continue with this album. The next song "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" is very different to this one but is also very "Smith." And the rest of the album is incredible.

I just remember buying the record as soon as it was released. Was already a huge fan long before TQID. At first, a very difficult record to listen to. The music video for this song is just incredible, directed by Derek Jarman (whom I believe was also a fan of the band). It's amazing how Morrissey's poetry completely dismantled this institution (monarchy), exposing them. I had some admiration for monarchs but this singer made me see the stupidity of the monarchy. Morrissey created this atmosphere in order to put the queen and her outrageous family into ridicule, not by using violence in his lyrics but he uses poetry and sarcasm to expose them. He creates this image of himself cleverly breaking into the palace and the queen, thinking about her own ability, tries to humiliate him by confronting him about his talent, "she said hey I know you and you CANNOT sing". But Morrissey with audacity tells the queen that he really has no ability to sing, but there's more, he's also a disaster with the piano. He's playing games with her. This is priceless. The Smiths' independent record label, if I can recall, tried to convince the band to change the name of the album. I remember a music critic who wrote that the musicians created such a compact atmosphere, dragging the listener into some sort of a "black mass", which is exactly what the royals and their world of privileges happen to be!

The famous 1986 Derek Jarman directed video of "TQID" needs to be seen to really understand the explosive power, moment, & political context of the track. The Smiths were at their commercial & critical peak with the release of the album/video - it was a bold political statement & ballsy career move when premiered. The guitar work: that's Johnny Marr, mate - one of the greatest to ever pick up the instrument. Much more to discover - they were the best UK band since The Beatles. For more Smiths, _Louder Than Bombs_ & _Meat Is Murder_ are prime starting points. This band changes lives.
