I enjoyed listening to these songs so much, the ability to create synth music in such a beautiful way is something that I am in awe of.
I played Final Fantasy a lot as a kid and I feel there are some similar elements between the two. I hope you enjoyed listening to Yellow Magic Orchestra with me!

"Behind the Mask" is a pop song that has been recorded by artists including Yellow Magic Orchestra, Michael Jackson, and Eric Clapton. It began as an instrumental written by Ryuichi Sakamoto for a 1978 Seiko commercial; it was rerecorded by Sakamoto's band Yellow Magic Orchestra and released on their album Solid State Survivor (1979), with lyrics by Chris Mosdell. In the early 1980s, producer Quincy Jones brought the song to the attention of Jackson, who contributed more lyrics and added an accompanying melody. The Jackson version was planned for inclusion on his 1982 album Thriller, but was dropped following legal disputes. Since then, artists including Greg Phillinganes, Clapton, and Sakamoto (as a solo artist) have recorded versions based on Jackson's updated version. Clapton's single was a top 20 hit in some markets in 1987, and a remixed version of Jackson's recording was released on his 2010 posthumous album Michael.

I stumbled on YMO years ago on Wikipedia of all places, been a huge fan ever since. If you liked Rydeen, I'd also recommend Technopolis, Multiplies, and La Femme Chinoise. I'm also a massive Beatles fan which is how I found your channel and I have to agree, Day Tripper is not YMO's best effort. They do a really fun cover of Tighten Up originally by Archie Bell and the Drells though. Keep up the good work, loving watching someone discover the Beatles (and now YMO!) and pointing out a lot of musically interesting things that my unlearned ear has just taken for granted!

Hi Caroline, Tong Poo was also recorded individually by Akiko Yano, a friend of the YMO and later long-time partner of Ryuichi Sakamoto, who wrote this song. Her solo music is fantastic and easy to find on YT. Here's the version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJnYn4uvoJqNias&ab_channel=WEWANTSOUNDS

God! I discovered the Yellow Magic Orchestra back in 1979. I was visiting my Italian relatives in Italy and I was introduced to a DJ. He invited me to his house and I watched him mix the first track you played - Yellow Magic (Tong Poo). He added some female vocals and he gave me a copy. I played it parties and it went down a storm. It was better than the original. I got into Kraftwerk in 1974 and also Tangerine Dream and Can (Soon Over Babaluma album).

Ryuichi Sakamoto from YMO orchestra did not only work with David Bowie in the 80s as many others already mentioned (they wrote the soundtrack for the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and both starred in it), he also had a song with Iggy Pop called Risky, also a great listen for everyone who might be interested.

Caroline you may be the first and only reactor to YMO - excellent choice. The Technodelic album was great (more Art Rock/Prog than goofy like this material). Listen to "Gradated Grey", "Key" and "Light in Darkness". Their drummer, Yukihiro Takahashi was also a singer (he sings on "Key") and he recorded some solo work that was good. Look for songs like "Something in the Air", "Stay Close" and "Drip-Dry Eyes" by Takahashi.

I think The Rolling Stones are the closing thing to the Beatles. Beatles made Let It Be, the Stones made Let It Bleed. The Beatles made Sgt Pepper, the Stones made Their Satanic Majesties’ Request. I grew up with the Beatles. Saw Zeppelin in their early days. I have heard a lot of good music. Today I watch Band-Maid. They too can write great melodies, compelling lyrics, incredible arrangements, good harmonies, genre defying but with a good core of hard rock. The instrumentalists are all great (Jimmy Page said Akane [the drummer] was the reincarnation of Bonzo.) The kicker is they are all young Japanese women who have reignited (and saved) rock n' roll. The movies videos or live number over 50.

OK let me add in one more thing I just thought of when Dave Brubeck wrote Toki’s theme for the TV show Mr. Broadway he thought it might be a little too stereo typical but then when the quartet went on tour in Japan this was the 1950s he realized this was exactly the sort of thing that popular bands in Japan were doing at that time kind of mashing up stereo typical Asian sounds motifs instruments with western music and the album does have elements of that in it though the music is more complex and interesting than typical Pop music a lot of it’s also kind of melancholy but beautiful

Synth music when done by maestros that truly master their art, are such a pleasurable experience that can take you to places that no other music can. For me, that mastery belongs to French composer *Jean-Michel Jarre.* I'm sure many of your subscribers and casual watchers would love to see/hear your reactions to his first commercial album, 'Oxygene' (1976). It may be 45 years old but it still sounds as though it is from _tomorrow._ The term 'timeless' is all to often bandied about these days, but this album has it woven into its very DNA. I have a feeling you may even want to explore even more of him (just like you've recently been doing with The Beatles albums) once you've listened to such a fantastical soundscape.
@mikepeligro

It was kind of in vogue back then to take 60s songs and give them a new wave remake. Check out Devo's version of "Satisfaction", for example. As for the vocals, their drummer Yukihiro Takahashi did most of the singing. There are a number of live videos available on YT from their early years, if you're curious. I personally dig the period when Akiko Yano was part of their live band. Caroline, I think you would love her song "Kang Tong Boy". Also check out the video for "Taiso", which David Byrne worked on with them.

Yes! I'm so happy you liked this! Such beautiful soundscapes they make, right?! Kraftwerk was another group at this time doing great groundbreaking stuff with synths, both are definitely the beginning of so much dance music that has been going on ever since. And I LOVE this "Day Tripper"! I like oddball covers, and this is them paying homage, and at the same time, doing it their way and having a lot of fun! Every single song the Beatles put out....has been covered, an amazing fact. And I love hearing all approaches. This one is so joyous! Anyways LOVED this video, so happy you love Yellow Magic Orchestra, much fun to be had......and I can now definitely say: whatever you choose to react to in the future will be fun and compelling to watch! Can't wait for the next snacks/band video, can't wait for "Revolver", and can't wait what other music you react to next! Thanks, Caroline!

I agree with Adan, you should listed some early Jean-Michel Jarre. His father was famous composer Maurice Jarre (Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, A Passage to India). JMJ has won dozens and dozens of awards and was made a Commander of the Legion of Honour this year. The albums Oxygène, Équinoxe, Magnetic Fields, and Rendez-Vous are favorites.

What a fun discovery! This is much more sophisticated than Jean-Michel Jarre's contemporary work IMO. I love that it's funk and groove first, "video game" second; more recent groups that 'try to make video game music' usually overdo it (Crystal Castles looking at you). Knowing you're an ABBA fan too I feel a connection between YMO and ABBA right off the bat! The Day Tripper cover has lots of parts I really like, overall I still prefer the original, but the YMO version is cool and different and interesting. I liked the first two tracks a lot more though. Cheers doing something original, this is fun, hope people see it and like it!

Cool band! Their synth tracks are perfect for video games. Definitely way better than the common lo-fi chill music we frequently hear nowadays. Thank you very much Ms. Caroline for introducing us to their music🙂Their use of vocoder kind of reminds me of Shakatak. I was also wondering Ms. Caroline if perhaps someday you might want to review Shakatak's music? They were a jazz-funk band that was accessible to mainstream audience in the 80s Maybe you'd also like to react to bands that used synths such as Erasure. Depeche Mode's sound may be darker for your taste, but they were also ground-breaking. Depeche Mode's "Violator" album is their finest work.

Hi Caroline! Are you planning to do any more Japanese bands? If so, I would recommend the band Akai Koen (赤い公園). They are an all female band which has (in my opinion) a unique blend of rock, pop, jazz, and funk. At best, I would describe them as alt-pop or maybe progressive pop-rock. Their name translates as "Red Park," so it would also be a nice continuation of Japanese bands with colors in their names. They had two different lead singers, and both had different strengths, yet their music remained consistent. The Japanese musicians chose the name to satirize Western stereotypes of Japanese culture. They intentionally mixed kitschy Western ”exotic” music like “Firecracker” by Martin Denny with traditional Japanese music. Racist would be oversimplified, but they are very much aware of Western “Orientalist” views of Japan.
